What the highest mileage car you've ever seen or heard of?
My '87 Hardbody has 465k. Engine had never been touched except for timing belts and oil.
Million-mile tundra!
Currently driving a 2005 Merc C220 cdi 6 speed manual, with 385,000 miles original motor. Just passed UK Mot inspection with no more than a broken coil spring. Still pulls like a train and drives perfect.
Million mile Toyota...
This is not Matt Farah's Million Mile Lexus.
"What do you guys think?"
I think OJ is a damn wizard and you guys are lucky to have him in the area.
He should teach at MIT.
@@pasquale78 he should teach at OJ University of BMW
Fr, wish I had a guy near me like him
E39 is just such a hooligan looking BMW, I absolutely love it. No matter what anyone says E39 and E46 are just the best generations of BMW.
Couldn't agree more.
also e38 never forget
I had both2003 E39 540 and 2001 E46 325ci
Dominykas Dainys currently own an e39 M5 in LeMan’s blue, and an e46 M3 in interlagos blue:)
@@claycrawford9009 my favorite colors for both cars!
Absolutely I’d be happy with -20hp over 300k miles.
Might be because of exhaust, I don't know for sure if this apply to S62 but in M52/M54 straight pipes cuts around 10 - 15 hp
Especially if that translate as a nice discount when buying the car.
@@NieJestemzPolskiPL Hm strange that it cuts power, in a M50 nv it helps gain power. And in most cases it does as 4 stroke does not need backpressure at all.
@@mn2630 Most engines might not need any backpressure in the exhaust to work properly, but if you take your time and tune your exhaust you can use the backpressure to induce more air into the engine. And many BMW models have exhaust systems that are more than optimal and it's very unlikely that a homemade solution performs better than what BMW has engineered. And this is not strange at all, this kind of perfection is what they are known for :)
NieJestemzPolskiPL if you do straight pipe with a careful selection of diameter plus a muffler , you certainly gain power. The problem is that most straight pipe exhaust also go much larger than needed in diameter... so exhaust gases speed slow down.
I love that your car has been used and driven. It's what they're made for, after all!
The Ultimate driving experience
!!
Would be interesting to see if a full service makes a difference.
Regardless of the mileage this one of the best looking M5's I have ever seen. The colour, the rims. the stance, everything about it looks gorgeous
gorgeous
We want M5 409k vs. M5 78k 1/4 mile drag race!
O.J. is one serious dude. Fifteen seconds after watching him I knew this is the dude to take my car to.
Those dyno straps are making me nervous.
Our dyno is not measuring resistance against the rollers. Dyno Dynamics is not an inertia style dyno, it's an eddy brake controlled with a load cell attached. The rollers are there to provide resistance, not measure power. The power calculation is determined by how much the cell lifts in relation to the load. Therefore for repeatable numbers, you want the car to climb the roller as much as possible without coming off. Both these cars had 4 straps, two for keeping it on the rollers and two for limiting its travel forward. Strapping the car too tight will actually result in even lower numbers! It's definitely a delicate balancing game
Thats really impressive considering the mileage..
only videos i look forward to on the weekend and this one doesn't disappoint. love seeing you guys actually put cars to work.
Awesome video man, this is exactly the kind of thing we want to see!
Alex you are a really cool guy and we all love how natural and transparent you are. Your excitement is contagious. I'm not surprised you have found great people to collaborate with. Thanks very much for your channel.
Another great video Alex! Love that E39 and C63!
Can we get an updated video from Greg? Id love to get an update from him after he gained 130+ horses to the wheels after three years of ownership at 207whp!
GOTTA LOVE OJ!!!!!!! THE ULTIMATE BMW MASTER TECH NERD!!!!
This car is mental. I love your channel. Couldn’t believe I hadn’t subscribed.
You are e legend. Keep up the fantastic work!
You make really good content. I enjoy the channel. I came across it when I found out I was getting my dads well kept 1997 MB C280. I started searching for all things Mercedes-Benz and your channel is helpful and awesome to watch. Keep it up
Wow the C63 exhaust looks awesome! Can't wait to hear it when it's done. Although I did like it sounded with open headers! Lol
Great video man! Love the m5 content
You landed an absolute beauty! And only 20whp! That’s incredible! Great videos and hope you’re enjoying the mM5 and converted from AMG 😋
Enjoy it in good health! Those numbers are amazing and the fact that it still runs great!
Awesome video as always from you two.
Down right the best E39 M5 videos on the net!!!!!!! Time to get to work on my stock '03 M5.
I really loved all of these comparisons. Very interesting
Also nice outro with all of you guys.
Man, thats respectable! I wonder if the difference could be due to worn drivetrain, sensors, fuel system, vanos, etc. Either way, thats pretty awesome
We tested my friend’s E39 M5 on the exact same dyno (DynoDynamics) in nearly the same conditions within 1 day and the cats made exactly 10WHP difference.
With stock cats: 353WHP
Without cats: 363WHP
Other mods on his car were: Custom made headers, Custom X pipe, Dinan mufflers, Alpha N tune by Jed from GSR Technic.
Guys please give me a like so Alex sees my comment.
Bull
@@medogabr9952 actually, cats do restrict flow and slightly reduce power. Its been proven countless times that removing the cats gives extra power, regardless of what vehicle it is.
thechillbro97 i never said anything about cats. My 340 is decatted. I can tell the difference in sound and power. Im saying this guy is totally lying about everything. Period.
Medo Gabr Hey man! I’d be happy to send any proofs of what I have stated. My own E39 M5 with Eisenmann mufflers and Alpha N made 343WHP.
My friend’s E39 M5 with headers tune and etc. made 363WHP as it was remotely tuned by Matt from GSR Technic (Jailbreak Tune in past). The owner, my friend, got fed up with the horrible smell and put back the original cats. He dynoed his car as he was curious what difference the cats would make. It was exactly 10 WHP. He runs Magnaflow’s race cats right now.
I’d be happy to email you if you would like to hear some more and see some pictures.
VBSource cap.
Absolutely happy with that. Great video.
Nice! A bit more than I had predicted, and good for the miles!
I love your M5, the e 39 is one of the most beautiful looking cars ever and yea I’d love to own something like it and would be happy with the power it makes after so many miles ❤️❤️❤️
My first ever E39 M5 I noticed when I had taken off the cats and muffler and had it full straight pipe I did only gain about 20-30hp but I lost torque -50lbs. I have since then learned that having it straight piped, you need to have a larger diameter pipes to get the exhaust out fast but that it has enough space to get out fast. On my second E39 I had longtube headers installed and I had a different muffler installed. Sport muffler with valves. I gained 74hp and 89lbs torque. In total 393hp and 380 lbs. With longtube headers and muffler and similiar Alpha N Tune
Great video and that kinda answers a lot of questions we all have where how much does an engine lose over mileage. I’d like to think it might be less if you had regular oil changes, but in the grand scheme of things that’s not a loss to worry about :)
Alex, come on load that E63 video today! Okay, okay I can wait! Liked the dyno comparisons of your driven 409K E39 Beemer (320K engine) to a garage queen 78K in the same model. (Except your car sounded more wicked and much stronger)! Been hearing great things about OJ and *Fluid Motor Union* there in Naperville, IL, so naturally seeing your Mercedes AMG E63 in the air brings a smile to my face.
Wow my friend that’s pretty cool considering over 300K. German Muscle 💪
good content man . well done
More than happy to finally hear that you go deep into the science of a properly built exhaust system. Where everyone thinks it's just some pipes with curves and good welding.
Wow just wow! Not bad. I just like the looks of the E39.
We would be happy with your M5. Gorgeous car.
Your M5 sounded AWESOME!
excellent video... thanks...Wellllllll Done
Great comparison!! Lot's of movement on the dyno; thought it was going to fly off

@@FluidMotorUnion thanks for thst information
@@bertsbug5757 No problem!
Really awesome outcome Alex , someone finally
Getting there money’s worth from a BMW .
That is an impressively low power loss figure given the mileage.
Also I'm impressed that the engine is perfectly happy doing back to back dyno pulls with such high mileage!! BMW ftw
Well, the S62 is a Modified M62 and shares most of the problems with the M62. Mostly defective VANOS seals, defective Chain and Air-Leaks.
Probably Alex should rebuilt his Vanos (if he hasn't done it yet), check the chain and most of the horses should come back. Also new or rebuilt fuel injectors might help. ^^
That's a fantastic exhaust sound on your car Alex! Definitely not a sleeper...
I use those exhaust clamps every day in Aerospace.
I wounder if this is a thing with other cars also like for example w210 e55 ?
Wow.. again. Excellent data.
It would be interesting to see what the 20 hp difference would look like on the road.
You guys should do some highway pulls to see what the true 'real world' difference between the cars is.
In Mexico
Alex your M5 sounds so great with that 'ballering' sound in the lower revs
That exhaust is a work of art.
Very impressive 👍
usually the mechanical bits will last quite a long time, it's the sensors and some electrical bits that kills you. I owned a '93 325i with 400k+ miles, still put down 180whp with a couple of mods and a remap after almost 20 yrs.
Alex, 189th! Pfft. Of those 189 there are a lot channels that hang out at dealers buying the latest hot cars (which I'm completely cool with) but your channel adds real value to the platform. Your helping shape the way people all over world evaluate their next used euro purchase. Write a book next!
Thanks Luke! Those aren't official numbers btw, Haha
Wish they where closer I'd go by for sure. Any recommendations in NC?
Are you going to do the timing chain guides? Changing out the entire pcv system is really easy with the timing covers and I have no oil consumption now
Awesome sounds.
Shown in this video....
Good knowledgeable dyno guy=good results.
Alex what did your E55 Dyno at I'm sure you've shown but I can't remember which video if so?
That Todd Quenneville exhaust fabrication 👏
Moar c63 content plz! I wonder what it will dyno at when the exhaust is done.
Any M car needs an OJ in their life.
She still sounds danm healthy imo. Got to love the sound of these e39s. Every V8 from this generation burns oil lol. Over 400hp with these looks and THAT sound I would say you done good!!!!!
Stock should read 310 hp, when I had my 2001 M5, after tune, air intake and exhaust, it showed 354hp not bad at 156,000 miles
I'm sure you put new plugs into your M5 as you are very tenacious. These cars like clean plugs especially if you run boost so it might not really matter in your case anyway. I would have liked to have seen a test from your old tune you came in with. Great stuff thank you!
*Unplugs MAF
*Gains 102whp
MODS BRO
C63 Exhaust plumbing is huge that's gonna sound badass!!+
OK this is totally funny because on your final tune I was jokingly telling myself watch he’ll makes in the 320s hp 😂
Would've liked to see how it performed with the tune it came with.
What’s the latest news on the cdi. Loving the videos
That’s close enough considering the mileage. What about rotating mass, are your wheels heavier than stock?
i kid you not my Mitsubishi was down on power with no engine light on .. i was inspired to do the same and i went to unplug the air mass wire just to see that the air hose thats between the air mass sensor and the throttle body was ripped.. i duck taped it and went on a test drive and the power was back !! thanks for such great vids !!
I think you have some internal bad seals, some oil burnt out of exhaust at the deceleration
I was thinking he’s getting a little valve float at high rpm also. You can see little puffs of smoke during the high rpm part of the pulls.
Valve stem seals
@@kevinxcal1 Jep, valve stem seals. Not good for the lambda probes also.
Make sure Vanos is working properly, the solenoids are known to fail or poorly function, your powerband is missing a lot of that sweet top end. Some mentioned in the comments that the exhaust may be restrictive, which may be the culprit. If you really wanted to compare the two engines in depth you could always do a compression test on both engines side by side.
Nice! Those numbers were aquired on a heartbreaker dyno if you had not noticed.
DD's are a very accurate dyno which is a problem for some LOL.
Great videos of 2 M5's battling it out but the saga doesn't end there, you both know you have to do the 1/4 mile runs..that will give us all closure..Please consider!! thanks to LSC,Greg and OJ (God)
wow, I can only say: WOW!! 😍😍😍
This video just made the BMW CCA newsletter!
Damn, that exhaust note is addictive.
Wow your M5 sounds good ! 👍
Even new, there are power differences between 2 same engines !
So after 300kM compared to 80kM, 20HP is nothing !
OJ did a great, great job tuning these cars
Thanks!
Maybe you have old camshaft position sensors CPS and theyre giving bad readings. I wonder where the power is going, you should add an oil catch can as well. Great videos!!
It'd be interesting to do a couple of tests on each of the cars and see how the numbers compare:
1 - Cold compression test, cold leakdown
2 - Hot compression test, hot leakdown
Also, drop a borescope in, and see what you have for deposits - maybe run some walnut shells through.
Alex I'm a mechanic and I watch you do your magic and it makes me want to fo better you got skills
I have a 450k ‘00 LS400!! Love your content. Is cars and Zebras your channel too? Guy sounds so similar to you
Alex, put some engine restore in her and dyno it again, project farm had some great results running engine restore in his high use tractor. Give her a shot.
Exhaust velocity is real. Big piping is not always better. But, it was still fairly close to the goal.
I get the comparison with the way your doing it. But with yours having a decat the fuel tables would need adjusting for the difference in AFR
I’d be totally happy with that
Any high revving, high performance v8 with that kinda mileage and only 20whp loss is an absolute testiment to engineering! My need to get my m60b40 e34 540/6 on the dyno ....shes running 250k miles now.
OJ needs a location in Minneapolis! :)
I know of an OJ that is on a state sanctioned vacation or at least was recently...
I would like to see what your numbers are with your aftermarket tune on it!!
You just need a better exhaust it looks like there's a lot of restrictions
It wouldn't surprise me to learn that exhaust is actually costing him power. In the clips Alex has shown, it didn't look like any of the piping that was put in was mandrel-bent. And some of it even looked like it was already a narrower ID than the stock exhaust pipe? That may have just been my eyes though.
@@matth8311 did you see where the restrictions were right around the O2 sensors
@@matth8311 His wheels look heavier than the stock ones too. Sure they look dope with the big lip and all, but all that metal is going to add to the rotating mass which also saps power.
@@jihadjoe exactly what I was thinking.
The bottleneck of the S62 is the stock exhaust manifold and the intake tubes. But the extreme restrictions are the exhaust manifolds of the pre-facelifed M62! Also BMW did check the power gain with modified S65- headers on a S62 and it was very surprising for a NA.
the moment when you look back at old video and gushing how fantastic and powerful the car was
Very important video. Seriously.
That cars about to fly off the Dyno lol
Also e39 M5 owner ! Let’s see this video !!!
So if I feel my Bimmer is a bit sluggish recently, should I try removing the MAF sensor and give it a beat down then plug it back? How is this possible without a dyno
Awesome cars..add CAI to increase sound and maybe a few more ponies..i have a 2013 bmw 335i msport
