Is Far-Right Media in Decline Because of Social Media?

  • We did it folks! Jurors for Trump’s hush money trial are getting to read their resistance tweets to his face as Meta’s crackdown on news is slowly asphyxiating conservative media. Jon and Max celebrate the good news, and then dive into the much more somber topic of dating in the Internet Age. It turns out Gen Z is abandoning dating apps in favor of social media and the “old school” approach of meeting people in person. Then, Max interviews blogger Jenny Livingston about what it’s like to learn you’re going to live 50 more years, thanks to a new drug that’s working miracles for her and many other people with cystic fibrosis.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

When Government is done right, it's boring. Policies are passed that work. Bridges get built instead of falling down. Ambassadors prevent WW3 on the weekly without making it public.
    Boring doesn't get clicks.

I've told my friends who were non-political that very thing for decades. I've always followed politics the way other people follow sports. But I've told people that they shouldn't HAVE to follow politics on a daily basis. You should be able to elect people who want to govern responsibly and then get on with your life. If you have particular issues you care about you might watch it more but you should not have to be kept in a constant state of worry and anxiety.

In the 1970’s I worked at a summer camp for children with cystic fibrosis all summer. This is such a miracle and a gift to hear about this new drug. For years, as my husband came back from Viet Nam, and I began my adult life, I wrote back and forth with my young campers as they faced end of life experiences, and they spoke/wrote about their expectations. I actually have no words for this miracle. 😅

When Laird died at 9 years old he was the longest living CF patient at Detroit Children's Hospital. That is how much treatment and life expectation has changed since the early 60s. So Jenny's story makes me very sad for the loss of my sweet cousin and his struggle which I remember well, and happy for Jenny and the life she has and that she can look forward. "Doubts like these crept into the minds of many people on Trikafta, too. What if the new drug stopped working? Or had horrible side effects? Or stopped being covered by insurance? Trikafta’s sticker price is more than $300,000 a year. Insurance typically covers most of that cost-minus what can be significant co-pays and deductibles-and Vertex offers co-pay assistance. But patients’ lives ultimately depend on decisions made by nameless bureaucrats in rooms far away: Insurance plans can suddenly change what they cover, and in 2022, Vertex announced that it would substantially reduce its financial assistance."

text messaging is the most emotionally distant form of communication, i dont even like texting with my friends too much it feels like it's ruining the friendships. First used one of these apps 10 years ago, officially retired as of last year. Not to brag but i feel confident talking to people IRL and its impossible to be charming in a text message. It comes off as corny or trying too hard, i hard disagree with the concept of dating apps as a practical dating tool. I got plenty of dates, and even a relationship or two out of them over the years, but I think they're part of the reason people , especially single people, are so negative.
I will never pay for another dating app subscription again, not even considering that the prices are totally ridiculous and you can "boost" your profile for 30 minutes.... its so patronizing, i hate everything about them.

I'm 62 now, ex and I split up years ago, the dating thing is just out of my reach these days, mostly because "this" imo, is not really an attractive package to offer someone. Full-time caregiver, although attractive from a "oh isn't that nice, he's caring for his mother" standpoint, that's about it, spent a lifetime avoiding dentists, haven't the time or money atm to fix it, always a deal breaker, and etc etc etc. This being said, I missed out on so much when I was younger being "shy", this is the thing that sucks about getting older, you figure out things were WAY easier than you thought, and now you've got it all figured out, you're too old to do anything about it. It's so easy now that I don't really want it, it's ridiculous, here's the secret to talking to that stranger: observe the situation, and talk about it, that's it, if you can also make it funny, it works nearly every time, and when it doesn't, it's usually someone you wouldn't want to talk to anyway.

Feels like the women in this age bracket always think there's someone better just around the corner, and you run into a LOT of flaky people. Not to mention the fact that there's significantly more men on dating apps than women and so there's more competition that way, too.

Thank you for presenting this guest, Jenny Livingston.. As a retired RN, I am in awe of the medical advances to give these people a renewal of their life. I really appreciate the young CF patients getting to look at living longer. What a blessing to be able to extend life through a medication. Hopefully, she will live a long and beautiful life. 34 years ago, I moved from CT to AZ, my "superpower" was believe it or not, AA, it was like having an instant peer group. I'd recommend it to _anyone,_ you don't _have_ to be a drunk, just say you're not sure, I found cars, roommates, apartments, my ex a d I met there. Remember that Jack Lemmon movie "The Days of Wine and Roses"...? Okay, so not a great place to find your spouse...

I had a friend with CF who passed away when we were 16 (about a decade ago). While it's bittersweet to think that a treatment like this was just around the corner, I'm glad people are getting the help they need now. It's also very touching because the way she talks about CF reminds me of the battle I went through with MDD/RDD (depression) and how I went through TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatments which saved my life. What a powerful story.

It’s true, interest rates made everything worse. By adding new pay walls and pay tiers to all the digital experiences that have always been open. Instead of just increasing costs for borrowers, the fed made an entire generations daily life more difficult and annoying. A reminder that fancy new tech ‘solutions’ are just a backdoor to monetizing what had been spontaneous and free.

They advertise with “Every 11 seconds a new couple is made on our site.” If you compare that to the enormous number of people signed on you understand the grift that it is. And I don’t assume that differs much across western countries. I’d have much better chances finding someone if I just contacted my interesting Twitter followers.

In New Orleans graveyards are part of the landscape. Especially in the city proper you will find a small one block graveyard in the middle of a residential area. It is jarring for visitors, but people step out of their homes, step onto the porch and are greeted with a full graveyard with aboveground tombs and headstones. We are confronted with the reality daily, and that shapes your ability to "let go of the small stuff" in a very special way. It is a weird gift. Love knowing Ms. Livingston gets to enjoy planning a future!

To me they replace the Dateline or other interesting news that I grew up with. I can no longer watch the news where 90% is negative, because it sets me up to be unsuccessful and truely feels like they're picking and choosing what then want to share based on what will get them ratings. Broad generalization I know... But it's my feelings on the matter.
