  • Need to get stereo in or out of a TRS jack? Have a Strymon pedal, an RJM PBC Mastermind, or some other piece of gear that has stereo capabilities but requires special cabling?
    In this video, I’ll show you how to assemble a stereo cable using Mogami 2314 cable and Switchcraft 236 plugs. I also throw in a few general assembly tricks for when you’re short on space inside a connector.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hi, I have a question that maybe you could help me out with. I have 2 Harmon Kardon Onyx 5 bluetooth speakers, and they cant be paired to play stereo. Does a cable exist that can split left and right channel individually so I can play them in stereo thru my phone's AUX straight into the AUX that is on the speakers?

    I could've used some heat shrink wrap around the two cables that you fed thru the barrel to make them a bit more rigid and protected other than good work.

    • @MD_is_me
      @MD_is_me Před 3 lety

      It looked like an already tight fit. I think adding shrink wrap would have been just enough to impede insertion through the barrel.

    Great tutorial. Can use use a similar cable to combine a mono out and return (Out 1-4 (tip) and In 5-6 (ring) on the Mastermind PBC) to a TRS plug then plug the TRS into a patch bay so that another similar Y cable (TRS to TS in (tip) and out(ring)) cable can go to input and output of a pedal off the board (audition pedal)?

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  Před 3 lety

      Thanks! You could do what you describe for sure, but the outputs you mention are only TS, not TRS. You would just use two TS cables to go into the rear of the patchbay and you're done.

To clarify, I want to use TS plugs for the out/in on the PBC and combine those to a TRS plug to go into a Schmidt array patch bay using only one plug. While this is mostly applicable it would be nice to have a "Part 2" that illustrates the challenges of building a 1/8 TRS to dual 1/4 TS insert cable. These TR/S consumer 1/8 sized plugs are, for better or worse, becoming ubiquitous in the synthesizer market.

    One issue I've been running into is that the outer shield will melt while I solder - especially if it's touching the strain relief tabs. How are you pre-bending those tabs (putting them in direct contact with the outside of the cable) without the cable melting when you go to solder?

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  Před 3 lety +1

      You're melting the outer jacket of the cable? What type of cable are you using? Sounds like you're using way too much heat, or just holding the iron to the part for too long, or both. At 750 degrees Fahrenheit, it should take you no longer that 2-3 seconds to solder the ground.

    Question: when soldering the cable to the Tip on the Switchcraft 236 plug (at 11:05) is it important to make sure the solder doesn't contact the plug casing below the threads on the plug? Would this create a short or other problem?

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  Před 4 lety

      Thank you! This is a great question, but you don't have to worry too much about it on these plugs. They come with an insulator that keeps the solder points from shorting out on the shell, as well as having plenty of internal clearance.

      DYMO special label maker. Pretty expensive. You’re just better off using your computer and typing out the words small enough where you can print them manually cut them put a piece of tape over them and wrap them around the cable. It’ll still look very clean and get the job done. You probably already did this since you’ve made this comment 11 months ago and have not been replied to yet. Well, there’s your answer.
