( life tends to knock one about a bit too...cancer, arthritis etc)...but you are right. I would not be racing, just touring at a leisurely pace and would just bimble along- 150w will be fine. On a completely different tack....I am always uplifted watching young people like yourself and other bicycle tourers just travelling, experiencing other countries and people at a local level. So important at a time when certain politicians advocate walls- and don’t even get me started on Brexit😥😥!! Keep travelling Jack!!

    I bought a Brompton last year they come with Schwalbe Marathons
    They have been doing a lot of road maintenance around my place
    I managed to bang up my rear rim, one edge was folded in about
    a half inch , the tire didn't even look like it had hit anything and it
    didn't Ieak . I put the bike away for the winter . I just looked at it
    yesterday, the rear tire has more air left in it than the front ! I just
    ordered a set of Marathons and tubes for my touring bike.

    Do you still have this bike setup? I am trying to build something similar from scratch using a Rohloff and a Bafang mid drive, but I was worried that 1000W is too much power to run through the Rohloff.
    Im just wondering if you have any input regarding that? Are you smoothing the power output out with parts from GRIN, or is the Rohloff actually handling the output directly using the Bafang controller.
    I think I read somewhere that the Rohloff warranty only applies if you use less than 250W, otherwise its void, but maybe I'm wrong on that?
    Any answers you have would be greatly appreciated!

    • @JackButlerVideos
      @JackButlerVideos  Před 2 měsíci

      The rohloff can be used on a tandem. They limit the maximum torque, you have to stay within their recommended gear ratios and it's fine then. I used the normal bafang controller.

    Hi, Jack I have been watching your China trip and build videos and would like to know how successful the panels were in keeping the battery full. You started with 3x 75 watt panels but I see 4 in the pictures so 300 watt at max? The battery is 35ah x 51v i.e. about 1750 watt hr? You covered an average of 1280/64=200km/day with maybe 12 hr days and I think you said about 10 watt hr /km so you would have needed ~2000 watt hrs per day. If you had 8 hrs of good sunlight that would be a max of 3000 watt hrs so may have been enough to keep you topped up - so my question is - how much charge (if any) did you need to add overnight ? thanks

    • @JackButlerVideos
      @JackButlerVideos  Před 4 lety +2

    Yes what started to be one turned out to be several questions: Would you consider taking another bike, or even another type of bike, like a recumbent etc. on the next trip? What did you grasp of the other riders considering this?
    What were the spare parts you took with you and which should you have left or taken instead of leaving them?
    As a courier: did you consider other things on your bike in terms of the equipment that is not just for solar or packing?
    And: thank you very much for making this one! :D
    If you happen to come by Darmstadt or even Heidelberg or Frankfurt, let me know, we ll grab a beer! or a coffee for that matter ...

      I would love to use a recumbent! I don't think i would be in a positio the to have the money to buy one and have money for the trip. I'm going to try a friends when home to see what it is like! I had a lot of spare motor components which are heavy (i could almost build two motors haha). Also connectors and cables and stuff but that's not so heavy or bulky. I carried that spare tyre the whole way and i should have just bought one in Almaty/had one shipped (i didn't know how bad the roads would be so wanted something more off road suitable) but now I know. I know from cycle couriering that having a mirror is amazing and a way to very quickly mount/unmount your phone from the handlebar is vital!

Could you send text messages with it without a mobile phone?; and 2). How did you make sure that your bike was safe when you had to leave it to go to the bathroom? I've been wearing thinnish suede/fabric gloves for the last few years (all year round) as a solution to "black hand"! It also seems to make the rubber grips last longer. Good information, bit "disappointing" to hear about the back tire, Schwalbe should fix that. The Cane Creek Thudbuster sounds like a Wonderfull thing to have and upgrade my own bike with.
    How do you feel about aero bars, did you miss having them or are they a too big risk on the roads you travelled?
    Are there other things you missed having?
    How about aerodynamics? Any improvements you would like to make?

    • @JackButlerVideos
      @JackButlerVideos  Před 5 lety +2

      I think the tyre has its place, it's just not on this route. I think in other central asian countries with worse quality roads it would excel. The thudbuster is great i would use it again, it's very expensive though! There was a few times i missed the aero bars yea but the second half of China was pretty up and down hilly so it wouldn't have made much of a difference. The problem with making the bike more aero is that it makes a larger side area to catch the cross winds which i can't even begin to imagine being any worse than they were haha! I would like to have more than 2 litres of water accessible without stopping as an improvement, this would be much more convenient!

    • @HansKeesom
      @HansKeesom Před 5 lety

      You are absolutely right about not wanting to create a larger side area. Closed TimeTrail wheels do not seem like a good idea for a trip like this. Higher rims though could bring you a few km each hour.
      A few watts can be spared with an aero helmet, not cheap but it does help a bit, when going faster. See czcams.com/video/M7JtY00HVo4/video.html
      I really like the kask infinity as I can open and close the vents, which helps when it's raining ;-)
      When you were blown away by crosswinds, was it the bike or the trailer pulling you to the side?
      Maybe tying together cables and everything else that is flapping around. Maybe use some transparent 3M tape to tie things together.
      Also, the rear end of the combination the bar looks very safe but also seems like a windbreak.
      Did you keep track of the engine temperature?
      For the engine I can imagine that on some days you want more cooling for it, on other days it can be cooled less. Although that won't bring you much I guess.

    1. Why no suspension? Front/Rear. Wouldn't it be more comfortable (I know it'll be heavier but still)?
    2. How was the border crossing situation with an e-bike, any troubles? Like not allowed, or need a license, or cant be more than 45km motor or 32km/h motor?
    3. Why not just bring 2-3 batteries instead of solar?
    4. Why no carbon belt drive instead of a chain?

    • @JackButlerVideos
      @JackButlerVideos  Před 3 lety +1

      Suspension is another point of failure that would end my race if i had to stop and fix it. Non western countries borders didn't know what an ebike was. The race was "the suntrip" so the whole point is to have solar. Also in the middle of Kazakhstan there's nowhere to charge anyway. Carbon belts are one piece and you have to cut your frame to install it. Leaving you with a weak point where the joiner is. Good luck on the trip!

    I'm planning to use my bike for touring using solar panels (The Sun Trip), and I'm ready to start building this proyect:)
    The thing is that researching a bit I found out that the new M625 is more restricted about programming and it only allows to use Bafang batteries and/or specified nominal voltage from the same brand, but not sure about it since there is not much information available nor Bafang says nothing on their website regarding this motor. Even it does not appear in the listing of motors they show, just M615 (BBSHD).
    As I mentioned, my idea is to travel extensively and I want to have flexibiility and easiness when programming any motor, but also being able to use any batteries of my choice and have the best motor quality overall. Anyway the kit was amazing apart from that, but I gave it to my mum who needed some assistance on her bike. My parents have a holiday house in the mountains with some extremely steep hills. This kit is perfect for that use, as it won't overheat like hub motors would do. And she really likes the throttle function too haha.
      I might add that the colour display/ control unit that goes on the handlebar is an absolute piece of shit. One died on me because of rain (not immediately, but could see condensation building up inside behind the screen for a little bit, then one day just dropped dead during ride), bought a new one, and that one started to have condensation as well after a couple of rainy rides. And that crap costs like £50. It's also not nearly as legible in direct sunlight as the cheaper black and white version (I have that on my dad's bike), and changes ride modes a lot slower compared to the cheaper black and white unit. Actually the whole operation of it is just sluggish when pushing buttons. I have no idea why everyone keeps saying what an improvement it is, sure at first glance all the colours and fancy graphics look cool, and have some extra functionality, but from a usability stand point it's simply a downgrade, and costs more that the earlier version.
