You could probably optimise the way the motor drives the wheel. Also, it might be a good idea to implement regenerative braking.
Edit: I have another idea to further optimise this thing. Install a solar panel on top of the person riding the bike, so that you can generate more electricity and provide some shade to the rider. Also, getting the panels higher could get them more sunlight.
I'd really like to see one of those panels just mounted to the back above the rear wheel, in that spot where a tray normally goes on those bikes with a thing on the back. then put on a better hub motor and see how far it can go in the sun. maybe with some thoughtful placement you could even manage to mount a 2nd panel somewhere else but I can't think of a good spot.. front of the handlebars is just way too sketchy imo. when you showed the top-down drone shot the obvious spot seemed like on your back, like with a backpack or something. would need to build some angled assembly to face it straight up not at an angle though

Hey Peter you won't get an accurate reading until you change out the off road tire for a street tire. The street tire will give you a smoother more flatter surface to apply the motor to thus giving the motor a smoother wider contact surface.
Rather just get a cheap hub motor. Much better efficiency and overall cleaner.
@@4nlimited3dition_4n3d Or both, of course.
@@4nlimited3dition_4n3d Hub motors are almost as pointless in comparison to this if you're going for efficiency. Mid-drive motors are what he needs to try.
@@edism Mid drives lose efficiency in the gears and chains drivetrain friction. They also lose reliability due to that.

10:15 hey! Speaking of efficiency, why don’t you use a more efficient driving system, like direct drive, instead of grinding your tires?
Also you would like to use a parallel sun panel configuration with a booster power stage, to avoid serial blockage of partial shadows of your path.
Btw I know, these needs more work an you wanted it on an instant. :)
the level of ghetto is over the top
if he just swapped the pedals he never uses for a motor bracket he'd be done

Love what you did with this. I thought about a similar project. Take a plug-in hybrid Prius and connect it up to a light weight solar trailer. Ge unlimited miles during daytime. Yaa!
Nice, quick, proof of concept. There are so many ways a person could make this far, far more efficient. For some examples. Use a good quality, in wheel hub motor. Use the thin, flexible, lighter Solar panels, and connect them to one trailer made out of a composite of EPS foam, fiberglass, a thin plywood top layer (to screw into etc), and Titebond III glue, and use two bike tires with low rolling resistance.
Create a fairing for the bike itself, and/or a bubble windshield, and even better, do that on a recumbent bike that is already more aerodynamic than a regular bike. Even better still, build the bike from scratch, using a combo of bamboo+S-glass fiberglass+high PSI tensile epoxy (preferably 7k+) for the primary structure.
If you get the weight down enough, and the improve the aerodynamics, you can use a smaller battery and less Solar panels. Basically creating a bike version of the Aptera car which may be coming out in the near future.
I like how the solar panel is wiggling behind the bike. It is so CUTE!
Suddenly got an idea, what if you make the solar panel on top of a shade, so you enjoy the wind and none of the sun while you are charging. I mean the snake tail is cool but not that safe.

lasersaber I know that it’s been done this way but definitely try it out yourself don’t get discouraged you could do a better job you never know so don’t give up
great and maybe more efficient! also less capacity may cause more voltage fluctuation on your esc
Good luck. ebikes use about 30-50watt hours per mile. you would need like 40lb of supercapacitors to in that range. but id love to see it done.
Supercapacitors are very good for absorbing high amounts of current demand or current inflow, however, their capacity versus their physical size has not yet reached a point where it is a good idea to completely replace your battery. I recommend adding them to your system regardless, because they do help, but keep a lithium battery on board to do the leg work.

Cool project! I've seen voltage float up when charging and down when draining. So at 23.5V can you tell if it's charged above where you stattey? If so how do you know vs. it just charging recently?
I have 750w of panels on my production adventure van. I average 350-450w generation when in direct high noon sun in the Pacific Northwest. More realistically I generate 200w ish on average during daylight. Also any amount of shade on the panels drastically reduces amount harvested just like you showed with your hand shadow. Solar is super interesting. I wish it was more efficient and affordable, thankfully it keeps improving every year
My peak generation of solar is actually in the dead of winter when they stay nice and coool. That’s the highest harvesting numbers I’ve gotten
Panels with micro inverters almost eliminates the issues with one panel pulling the entire array down due to shade. PV is only getting cheaper and more efficient, it has come a long way in the last decade, if the evolution continues we are going to see some serious s***. uplifting fact of the day; PV is now more economical than coal and many fossil fuels :)
Daniel Christiansen - I’m always surprised to see how much of an effect one cell within one panel makes, in the output of that single panel, if there is a faulty cell or its blocked from sun
Lying panels flat wastes most of their production, getting the correct permanent angles to the sun is best. Even better is tracking to maintain the ideal angles. But application and cost are always limitations.
@@Levi_Allen Many panels contain bypass diodes to allow rerouting of a section if it's impeding the rest of the string.

Blocking a cell in a shadow basically is the same as forcing the other panels through a giant LED, as far as the resistance goes
Justin Bassett-Green So, riding it under even partially shadow path makes it very inefficient. Parallel configuration with a power stage (parallel boosters) would make it more efficient.
I like the concept. A fast stacking trailor is a great idea when you need to park it. I would build one for sure if I just had a bike hub motor for simplicity..
Excellent Work !!
Great Video... A+ It would have been cool to see the panels overhead instead of behind the bike like a Toktok. Nice work all in all.
Great video love the fact that you’re experimenting with different ideas to get your battery power recharge without plugging in keep up the good work. Xenia is a great place to ride
Please put some type of remote control car suspension system on the panels.
Inflatable tires at low pressure would do the job
Great Concept, would love to see how a paralel connection would have helped on shading. But you‘d need 12V battery, boost converter and thicker cables. But anyways, this could be great for touring on top of an actual trailer where you could store a tent and whatnot
the french mopped SOLEX was using a similar friction system with an abrasive stone roller connected to a tiny gas engine which was dropped on the front wheel by a lever and you could also use it as a regular bike
