I bought 3 cans of Brillo oven cleaner for a buck a piece at the dollar tree!, it worked as good as O'rileys foam degreaser and at 65 that was definitely the cheapest high I've ever gotten!, now I now why everybody's mother was always cleaning their ovans when I was growing up!. Lolololo!.
Oh really, cause Oreally has abrrasive products that dont harm your engine.
I’m worried about wrecking my engine
Yea sodium hydroxide or lye works great at degreasing but it eats aluminum in particularly.. it literally dissolves aluminum.. so if you got any polished or chrome it will etch it pretty quick., youll see it turning black when its eating at aluminum or certain metals..
That's the information I was looking for! Thank you for sharing 👍
Doesn't start the engine cleaning until 4:40.
thank you, a lot of talking for a yes or no answer
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thanx bro
Thank you
3 years ago I restored our 1950 Farmall H tractor. I used oven cleaner everywhere. It did an amazing job, and worked much better than I thought it would. Only the hardpack material needed a bit of convincing to leave with a flat screwdriver, but then I reused the oven cleaner and all was great.
Great video! I appreciate your taking the time.
Noice! Ended up looking better than I was expecting. :)
My usual method for degreasing stuff is spray lubricant (somewhat counter-intuitively) and then a healthy dose of brake cleaner, which - as is commonly known - solves everything. Your method looks cheaper, though. Might give it a try in the coming weeks, as I should get my hands on an old-ish clunker to bring back to life, if everything goes to plan.
Brake cleaner works well, but it would have taken many cans for a mess like this. Plus our Walmart is always out of the cheap super tech brand brake clean lol. I’ve never tried using a lubricant to clean an engine but it sounds like a interesting idea especially for something with lots of rust to clean off
Yeah I use WD-40 to help clean stuff a lot. Since it acts to loosen up grease and oil, plus it helps with rust, it can really get things moving. Purple Power is cheap and works pretty well too.
I always use Shout laundry stain remover, its also good for oil stains in driveway. I used to work on an offshore ship and shout was all we used to degrease things in the engine room. Its much more pleasant than many degreasers which can be very harsh smelling and dangerous to skin.
What i do s spray the hell out of the engine with oven cleaner, when the foam begins to turn brown as it dissolves the gunk i use a good brush to loosen it up then pressure wash it.
Wiring and brushery is my favorite. Looks good!
There were even worse speech fails that I edited out haha, that’s what I get for making a video after getting off work
Hahaha it was honestly fine.
@@RustBeltGarage1 are you going to change the heads gaskets too?
Thanks, I’m going to try this!
Been using it to clean rebuilds since 1970. Blocks, heads ect.
When the dollar store started selling it I was so happy.
Also use muiratic acid to remove rust. It is fast and cheap. Eats rust long before the rest of the metal is damaged. Just soak your worst rusted parts for a bit, and watch the magic. Just be sure to neutralize with baking soda.
I'm thinking about using it to clean the underside of my jeep after a major oil leak. Thoughts?
@@gonesville6873 That oil might make great rust prevention / protection. especially if your roads are salted. Anyway oven cleaner can destabilize paint and underbody coatings / rustproofing. Consider a milder degreaser that wont damage painted surfaces.
Man I had to wait until half the video to see the cleaning I just fast forward lol sorry buddy I just wanted to get straight to the point 😂😂😂great video though and love the CL monte carlo
We put a tractor engine in a metal barrel, filled it with water and Dawn dish soap. After that we put a turkey frier burner under it. Brought it up to a boil. It did a good job.
I thought you was joking for a second
use tide in there.
Will it damage rubber and plastic parts though?
Get the yellow can (easy off) it works really good. Just dont leave it in on to long like 5 to 10 minutes. Works great.
J&&&j&
I Appreciate the good beat
Easy off brand works better. It's more expensive but works way better. I powder coat parts at home and after using easy off, I don't use the cheap brand any more.
Thumbs up for a fellow Buckeye but mostly you earned it with a nice proper video not filled with stupid music and/or stupid slang.
Damn. I have been using orange sol. Its cleans it better but for that price they worked pretty damn good
Dang man you got some cool bangs
Roll out that Monty Carlo, and take us old folks back in the day.
NaOH-Sodium Hydroxide/Lye is the active ingredient in all of these cleaners (except for the kerosene based cleaners). Sodium Hydroxide changes oils/greases to soap which is water soluble. The only difference between the cleaners is the strength and a "cling" additive. You could also use drain cleaner (very effective) but it would be dangerous.
Oven cleaner worked for me. I hooked up a water hose to a pressure washer from the hot water faucet that supplies the washing machine.
I did the same thing .
I used Purple Power and Super Clean they do the job . But Easy Off HD oven cleaner its were its at.
Does this hurt seals at all that’s the biggest fear is rubber seals being degraded from the chemicals
Oven cleaner also works great on white wall tires. 👊🏼🇺🇲
I'll remember that if I ever find myself in 1952
"In storage"=junkyard....lol good job
you should of went to the $1 store lol save money man nice vid
Try TSP or Trisodium phosphate as it's another good basic detergent...
But will it clean your driveway?
I've done this for years, it's just lye it will make you cough a little if you breathe the mist, keep that can shaking, it won't damage anything, just keep it out of the internal spaces, where oil or air/fuel goes, coolant galleys are fine, but you'll have a tough time getting it back out again. I do this primarily in preparation for paint and rebuilding.
Spray then wipe off? Or pressure washer?
I think a good degreser and pressure washing would be better I think the lye in oven cleaner is mostly for like carbon
Do you ever see spooks rise out of the ground NW of your driveway?
Oh yeah all the time lol, we get kids around Halloween that go walking around back there late at night. I’ve made a habit of spooking them if I see them back there.
Awesome video! Btw, do you live across the street from a cemetery???? 😳😳
Yes i sure do, I like scaring groups of kids that sneak in there at night ;)
Dollar tree brand works well
Do not use oven cleaner on rims for brake dust removal. From experience, it will in fact remove all brake dust along with clear coat lol.
I’ve been using oven cleaner for over 50 years back in the old days we had a good stuff
A train in your garden??👍😉🇳🇱🇪🇺
Is oven cleaner supposed to work better than regular engine cleaner?
It is stronger but the biggest difference is the price. Oven cleaner is way cheaper
@@RustBeltGarage1 Thanks. I suppose you wouldn't want to use oven cleaner on a working engine that is in a vehicle due to the possibility of damaging the paint, correct?
Using these harsh cleaners is good and well, but what about then getting paint to stick to the surface. There will be remnants of the chemical especially in corner and hidden areas which will then start peeling the new paint off.
Any paint prep solution would take care or any residue, which would need to be done anyway regardless of if any chemicals have been used to clean the engine off. A lot more work would have to be spent cleaning an engine off if someone intended to paint one in this condition anyway with all of the old loose paint and rust scale on it.
Do people think before they comment? Common sense tells you that water will rinse it away, what do you think you have to do inside your oven? Leave the residue in your oven? I think someone was just trying to hate on this video and didn't have much of a leg to stand on
i use bbq cleaner
can anyone help where can i find a engine stand and lift without breaking the bank $250 budget
Harbor freight is your best bet, or something used
Sodium hydroxide is our, the same active ingredient that's in some drain cleaners.
That probably works pretty well, I think that stuff is an even stronger base than the oven cleaner is
That probably works pretty well, I think that stuff is an even stronger base than the oven cleaner is
Put down plastic sheet and some cardboard while spraying and scrubbing so you do not stain your flooring.
Lye is the active ingredient in oven cleaner
Lye based cleaners must not be used on aluminum.
Go to your local brand dollar store for even better price on oven cleaner. Use Awesome or Simple Green and long handle, long bristle brush to finish clean and rinse. Your local machinist will thank you.
😊
Oven cleaners are based on lye or hardcore base
Wahahaha you got a lions flag in the background. You a Michigander like myself?
oven cleaner/degreaser works on a hot surface better, you need to heat up the engine with a gas torch and then spray the cleaner, it gains 200% of effectiveness
That hole in the valve cover helps when you spray oven cleaner in the open internals in the engine.STOP up all Holes first.Dude.
DID THAT 45 YEARS AGO WHEN THE OVEN CLEANER WAS REAL TOXIC!!
I agree with really stronger
If motor,,jst put gallon of disel in spray bottle and after scrub wash out and rinse with detergent and wash again and dry out then all GD to go ..
I’ll have to try the diesel, I’ve got about 10 gallons of it from a vw I parted out
Will this method of using diesel work on cleaning crud out of inside of engine. Without it rusting.
Why don't you use high pressure water to wash the engine
Not everyone has a pressure washer and they don’t always get everything off. My harbor freight pressure washer was broken lol
That's not a great idea to use it on any aluminum radiators if indeed there was a coating it's probably to keep corrosion down to a minimum and the basic oven cleaner is going to strip that off. For the radiator you're probably going to want to use a cleaner that is acidic as they are less reactive than basic cleaners in regards to aluminum.
You don't need to presher wash because it's going to get rusti
leave it on over night.
Dollar tree has it cheaper
Its like $2.50 you tight ass
@@brockbartlett666 But if it has the same ingredients and does the same job why give away $3.00
Never do this on your garage/driveway pavement. Grease stains suck!
Mine was already stained lol
I hope you didn't spray water into the exhaust manifold leading into the cylinders....
Try dollar store oven cleaner
Ok so step #1, take the engine out of your car. 👀
Jokes aside it looks really good
Go lions
I’ve been using oven cleaner for 400 years
I see this fucking the rubber up though, it's strips oils and grease so it will make the rubber weak
Why would you use such a crappy water nozzle with absolutly no pressure ???
Check the ingredients same oven cleaner at the dollar store for $1.00 i have been using this for cleaning riding mowers followed up with a pressure washer.
If it said it needed a set for two hours and you're going to give it 10 minutes I would say that kind of oven cleaner was a waste of time and money I was kind of interested to know if it would work if you followed the directions let it set for 2 hours come back and clean it off 🤔
All oven cleaners require an hour or two to set. This is because after that time frame you’re supposed to heat up the oven it’s intended to clean which can’t be done here because well , it’s not an oven lol. Oven cleaner will actually dry and harden if not washed off after a half hour or so and leave stains on stuff
Maybe put less water 💧 inside the motor?
Probably better off with a dollar tree degreaser , and safer
I've often wondered why the gearheads I watch dont use oven cleaner.

Get Scrub Free oven cleaner from the dollar twenty-five store. Four cans for five bucks.
just read the instructions....no?
It's OK to clean an engine with no electronic components and out of the engine bay. BUT, a modern engine would have its sensors damaged and maybe have the computers damaged or the paint on the fenders or firewall may be eaten away by the caustic cleaners in "oven cleaners". If you own a car made after 1980, don't use this method!
People, please don’t spray into the wind…
Was he trying to sell me oven cleaner? 2 minutes talking about oven cleaners.
He was really talking about the scientific method. Just relax and allow yourself to learn something. It doesn't hurt.
now you have an engine full of water.
Everything was sealed up, I had no issues with water getting in it
Sodium hydroxide + aluminum = bad day ! Dont mix
Don’t want to lose your Eyeballs 👀 wear Eye protection Problem solved
Wanna sell dat G-body
They work. I highly recommend using a face mask using them though. They are highly irritating and dangerous to your eyes and lungs.
Let it sit for about half an hour, before you rinse it off get a brush and agitate the build up and then spread off
Step 1 how to ruin ur driveway
Sodium hydroxide is an acid.
No a strong base not acid
All that oil is going into the groundwater.
What oil? The engine is covered in decades worth of dirt and dust
And? Everything winds up going in the ground one way or another. When we as humans finally kill ourselves off, guess what? Everything we ever created will go back to the ground.
Talking way to much dude just stick to point!! Oven cleaner use on engine!!!
If you ever actually post a video, you can do it your way.
You talk to much get to the point
