  • Welcome to Xtreme Chest Locked, the series where we take on Runescape's hardest challenges whilst being limited to only chests.
This means EVERY aspect of the game, we can not train agility without using chests, obtain items without using chests, or use shops as they are not chest related.
I've theorycrafted this series for months and can answer any questions you have, if you have anything to ask please do in the comments!

Thanks for checking out my new series! I honestly hope you enjoy this fresh concept! I understand a lot of people may have questions
about the series, I've spent a LOT of time theorycrafting this series alongside @Zayzed, and I can answer any question you can throw at me, I'll add them to the FAQ below!
    FAQ:
Q: Can you kill any monster?
A: No, only ones that drop chests directly, drop keys for chests, or killing them is required to unlock a chest (barrows).
Q: Can you pick up all monster drops?
A: No, only keys, clues and chests. (e.g Wilderness slayer I can only pick up clues and larrans keys)
Q: So why can't you kill none-chest related monsters for clues?
A: I thought it'd be too lenient for an xtreme series and wanted to be harsh, so we can only obtain clues from either chests directly, or from monsters
    that meet our other requirements.
    Q: What about clue steps?
A: We will make no exceptions for clue steps, if emote clues require armour we can't access, we can't do it, early game if we need a spade for a clue,
we can't use a spade for a clue, if a clue is locked behind a quest that does NOT unlock a chest, that clue step is locked forever.
Q: Speaking of quests, can you complete every quest?
A: No, only quests that unlock a chest with REPEATABLE loot, if a quest has a chest in that contains a quest item, that doesn't count, for a chest to count it must
unlock a repeatable action for consistent loot.
Q: What do you do with quest rewards?
A: Drop them all, if it's a reward that cannot be skipped such as experience, I can obtain it as it's unnavoidable and locks out a chest, if it's an
experience lamp however, I have to drop it. Same with things such as Iban's Staff.
Q: What about obtaining items for quests?
A: There are almost no quests in the game that are completable using only chests, so we can obtain these items from other sources, complete the quest to unlock
a chest, and then promptly drop the items.
Q: Speaking of experience lamps, random events?
A: I can only complete ones that have a chance at dropping half keys, and drop other loot - or Leo, as he is coffin based making him chest related.
Q: Half keys also exist on the RDT, can you kill any RDT monster?
A: No, if a monster that drops keys also rolls the RDT, I can pickup the half keys, but I cannot go out of my way to kill a monster just because it has access
    to the RDT.
    Q: Can you use shops?
A: Only shops with consumables from chests (e.g Mermaids Tears) or from chests that act as shops (e.g Lumbridge Chest)
Q: Is there a limit to resources obtained from chests?
A: Resources from chests can be used in any way, if i can bones I can use the chaos altar, and if I get herbs I can use the Jekyll random.
Q: What about tools that are infinite?
A: Pickaxes, Axes, Fishing Tools etc can only be used by training via chest related activities (e.g. camdozaal mining) OR if they use a resource
(e.g fishing rod and fishing bait), once the resource runs out, I can no longer fish in this example.
    Q: Are crates chests?
A: No, only Chests, Coffins and Sarcophagi are considered, as well as things that are literal chests but not named as such, like camdozaal lockboxes.
Q: So training every skill must be a chest related activity?
    A: Yes!
Q: Can you train other skills in the Chambers of Xeric?
A: Kind of - I can only train thieving there as a 'Primary' activity because it is a chest, but the other skills I cannot train there normally, I can only do the other skills in the Chambers of Xeric when I am actively completing a raid, think of them as 'Secondary' training methods, that can only be done if I'm going for the final chest.
Q: Can you train every skill using just chests?
A: Almost, all but one skill is trainable - even agility! Using only chest related content, but woodcutting is a hard one.
We require 70 woodcutting for Song of the Elves, but there is no chest related woodcutting activities, any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Our options are either:
    a) Cut to 70 and drop all logs as an exception
    b) Include something that kind of fits, like Ents, as you... technically cut from their chest and obtain stuff they stored there...?
    It's a hard one.
Q: I noticed you bought empty buckets from the culinaromancer chest.. how did you acquire water for the buckets unless you consider sinks/fountains chests?
A: I mention it briefly in the video, but as jugs are a resource, I am allowed to fill them with water!
Interacting with a sink is just kind of... modifying my existing resource obtained from a chest, and as it grants 0 experience I allowed it, in a similar vain if I obtain bones from a chest I am allowed to use the chaos altar, and if I obtain logs, I can go to a sawmill to turn them into planks 'modifying' the item, I hope this makes sense?
Q: Why drop the spade? You need it for quests, clue scrolls and for barrows later on. Or do you plan on dropping your spade after every barrows run?
A: Lovely question - so it falls into rule 2, basically all chests must be lootable, meaning Barrows indeed must be lootable, if there was no way at all for my account to get a spade, you are correct, I could grab a spade as an exception because it's required, but there are actually some chests that give me a spade, so I cannot cheat for it!

There's a number of woodcutting training methods.
In CoX there's Ice Demon and Muttadile, in RFD there's the Kharazi Jungle brush which you have to chop through for a subquest, not sure if you're counting subquests as chest-related but they do unlock glove upgrades from the Culinaromancer Chest.
If not, Achey Trees are also valid, as you need to chop them to make Ogre Arrows for Big Chompy Bird Hunting which is a prerequisite for Mourning's End Part 1.

If you cut down more than 3 achey trees because you're worried about running out of arrows during the quest, or you accidentally die or drop them and need to cut more achey trees, I don't think we could judge you for being clumsy. Woodcutting is a tough skill indeed, but I think there are some solutions.
This idea is kinda long but hear me out. Completing Legends Quest I believe does give you access to a chest/ "one sorta woodcutting training method" according to your rules/FAQ. Lets talk about the chest first. So during and after the quest you go into a place called the Viyeldi Caves. At the end of these caves there are barrels there barrels have a HUGE array of items that are contain in them, including 1 dose prayer pots, strength pots, defense, noted sharks, ores, bars, and CASKETS. No one ever goes to these barrels so their exact rates are unknown so that could be something you could investigate in a future video. These barrels also have a chance of spawning monsters so have fun with that. Hannanie, actually did a video on those barrels called "The Infinite Barrel Glitch". I believe that even though the barrels are not specifically called a "chest" you did say in your FAQ that "No, only Chests, Coffins and Sarcophagi are considered, as well as things that are literal chests but not named as such, like camdozaal lockboxes.", and I think the barrels count under that rule plus these barrels have an chance to have an actual chest inside them.
Now lets talk about the "one sorta woodcutting training method" I mentioned earlier that comes with completing/starting legends quest. Since there is an actual chest, and several clue steps, in the Kharazi Jungle you need to woodcut to get in there at the very least. There is no woodcutting requirement to cut your way into the jungle, but the 50 woodcutting requirement for the quest is for Yommi Trees which are AFTER you have access to the barrels by the way. Now I call this "one sorta woodcutting training method" because I don't know if this is a similar condition to camdozzeal or not that you mentioned here at 17:35 and whether or not you just go back and forth JUST cutting your way through to only train woodcutting OR only allow yourself to cut your way through to access the barrels/clue steps thus getting a minimal amount of woodcutting exp per trip. Up to you there.
The only other thing I can think of is that, although its at a higher level for woodcutting, there is cutting Sulliusceps at level 65 woodcutting. Cutting these can give numulite which are required to open the stone chest on Fossil Island.
Please tell me what you guys think about this and let me know if I got anything wrong I would really like to see Tellicon try those barrels out.

    • @Tellacon
      @Tellacon  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Very thorough!
      1. The barrels at the end of vayeldi caves are indeed valid to loot because a casket is on their drop tables, but I can only loot the caskets!
      2. Because of this, theoretically I can cut through the jungle to gain minor woodcutting experience, but this will fall into 'secondary experience', I didn't explain it this episode, but basically there can be primary training methods that lead directly to chests (camdozaal, cox chests etc) and secondary which are things that happen on the way to chests (ice demon CoX woodcutting/CoX Herblore)
Cutting the kharazi jungle would fall into the latter, I CAN gain experience this way, however it would only be once per trip if I had the intention of looting the barrels.
This might sound a bit confusing, but this series is for me to have fun as well! And I think just allowing myself to train there would be 'too easy and unethical' to the series if that makes sense!
Similarly with fossil island, the stone chests there don't give us a constant stream of loot, while they are chests and technically valid, if underwater agility didn't exist, I wouldn't have actually allowed myself to unlock Fossil Island just for those chests, as they don't really do much, but like you said they are valid - the problem with them is that they require 64 woodcutting to start, so we need to get there first!
Seems you understand the rules pretty well! Good comment

    Just some notes from watching:
-The Lumbridge Portion of RFD requires Witch's House so that might not have been the best example of a non-completable quest if you do plan on allowing full RFD completion to "finish" the Culinromancer's chest.
-There was no need to ditch the kitten, it's going to be required to do the quests to get to ToA, coulda just left it in the bank for now.
-Once you have the required items from crystal chest it MIGHT be worth saving any excess keys for the one in Prif for the boosted drops.
Some bits of Woodcutting XP you can get via rules. I've not gone SUPER in depth researching every single quest on the path to these, just a heads up.
-Enlightened Journey, needed for Monkey Madness II which unlocks the bank CHEST on Ape Atoll. Gives 1500 WC xp with no WC requirement. 1500xp total, level 11.
-RFD (Skrach), needed for "finished" Culinromancer's Chest. Gives 1500 WC xp with no WC requirement. 3000xp total, level 16.
-Heroes Quest, needed for "finished" Culinromancer's Chest. Gives 1500 WC xp with no WC requirement. 4500xp total, level 20.
-Icthlarin's Little Helper, needed for ToA access. Gives 4000 WC xp with no WC requirement. 8500xp total, level 25.
This would get you enough WC xp to be able to at least use the mithril axes. (Could then avoid doing random other methods for getting lower tier axes, though you ended up getting a steel one after typing the first part of this)
I'm not immediately seeing any others that can be done from there but you will also need Eyes of Glouphrie for MM2 which gives another 2.5k xp (but requires 45 WC).
A possible training method you could consider would be killing Ents during wilderness slayer (and then chopping after) since they would be able to drop Larran's Keys. Would be a pain and may not be 1 to 1 with how your ruling works but would likely be the closest you can get to being chest-related Woodcutting.
    Good luck on the series!

Ooo I love this writeup! Let's go over some points!
      1. I can do Witch's House, I'm just a dumbo who missed it because I always do the quest early.
      2. Correct, but I have no way to feed it currently so I can just buy a kitten for icthlarin's little helper when I need to and grow it up when I get food, you're right though I just thought it'd be funny to shoo it away!
      3. The priff chest is actually my only way of getting an onyx unless I decide to allow tekton! Which I might, but with the new cox changes coming I think I may be skipping tekton entirely having only a bone dagger for spec, we will see though.
      Woodcutting:
The main issue with woodcutting is I don't want to just be able to infinitely cut and keep logs, if I had 0 options, I'd allow myself to cut trees and drop logs purely for the SOTE quest requirement, but I think I have a solution in tree seeds. If I quest to 15+ woodcutting, and then farm tree seeds, I don't want to cut them infinitely as stated but I may let myself keep 100~ logs per tree seed, then I have to dig it up, this is using resources from chests to grow trees so seems totally valid!
Ents are a bit weird, believe it or not they do NOT drop larrans keys on slayer tasks 🤔

Incredible series, i cant wait to see where it goes. I know you already specified it in your rules, but i still really feel like a crate is more similar to a chest than a coffin or sarcophagus. Considering the later two are typically meant for corpses while the first two are both used for the storage of items/goods, it doesnt make sense to me to not allow crates. Also, allowing crates means reward crates from wintertodt which also gives a woodcutting method resulting in a chest.

This was a thought we had, that I might need to look into more, as theoretically it hits my rules as it's obtaining a resource, using the resource, and then chopping what was grown from the resource!

@@Tellacon Wouldn't it be more "natural" of a stopping point to simply dig the tree stump up immediately? Not sure if that would make 70 WC completely unviable... But I think Brimstone and Larran's chest both have some tree seeds on the drop table, and so do a few of the actual slayer tasks?
As for ents, you can get them on wilderness slayer tasks, which means they should drop larran's keys, but they don't. I didn't know it was possible for a Krystilia slayer task to have no chance of larran's keys. You could make an exception since they *should* drop larran's keys... I don't know. It's rough.
Of course there's also chopping ice demon in CoX only when actually completing the raid. Something like you have to scout non-ice demon raids until you get 1 kc, then you can do Ice Demon as long as you're actually doing the raid?
Edit: you could also just let yourself chop a planted tree indefinitely (possibly without keeping the logs or not beyond first stump), since the axe, the seed that grew the tree, and everything came from chests. But I'm not sure 100 or other arbitrary number fits an extreme account.

I know of a way that can give WC xp while working towards a chest, but there's a catch.
Trouble Brewing: This *_technically_* isn't needed for a clue scroll, but it helps immensely. Master clues may need Greenman's Ale (m), you can only obtain this via brewing. Brewing Greenman's Ale only gives a 5% chance for it to mature over 1.5 - 5 days, but a 64% chance if you use "The Stuff" from Trouble Brewing. And in Trouble Brewing exist Scrapey Trees, which give 25 WC xp when cut. (Same xp as normal trees)
Without "The Stuff" you're likely looking at weeks if not months of failed brews to get just 2 kegs, or 8 drinks, of Greenman's Ale (m).

There is technically a way to get woodcutting XP from chests, however it can only be done with 50 firemaking (which is obtainable with only chests)
    Basically, Wintertodt.
The definition of a chest is: "a large strong box, typically made of wood and used for storage or shipping."
Thus, the Wintertodt crate could technically fit the definition of a chest.
As such, the minigame can be played to gain woodcutting xp, and/or any tree seeds gained from the crates can be grown via farming and cut down.
If nothing else, it seems like a more reasonable compromise than simply grinding on random trees

First is the "secondary" training methods as you've described.
Achey Trees for Big Chompy Bird Hunting (Prerequisite for SOTE)
Kharazi Jungle trees and brush (Part of RFD subquest)
Saplings in CoX both for completing the Ice Demon room and for cooking bats/fish in the prep rooms.
The meat tree in the Muttadile room of CoX
Now primary methods, which afaik are the only valid training methods according to your restrictions.
ReFlexRick suggested doing wilderness slayer for Larran's Keys and passively gaining woodcutting XP from Ent tasks.
There's a stone chest on fossil island that requires 100 numulite to open and has a chance at giving you some notes for the collection log. Completely and utterly useless but it could be used to justify Sulliuscep cutting and any other fossil island activity.

[Woodcutting & Firemaking] Shades of Mort'ton is a firemaking minigame and the end reward are chest, so everything to do it is fair-game.

Shades is totally valid aye! But there is no woodcutting experience gained there, the logs used must be obtained from chests, because they can be obtained from chests, so there is no reason to woodcut for them (If that makes sense)

      @@Tellacon Yeah, that make sense.
So~ Winterdot as crates are a form of chests ? Firemaking to 50 with shades with the wood from the Camdozaal Vault and then woodcutting the root in winterdot ?

@@GuildedChunks Nooo, wintertodt crates are crates, meaning I can't actually loot them, crates aren't chests!

You can maybe train woodcutting at Wintertodt. You cut the roots, burn them and get a create as a reward.
