    I did all of those forms in my TKD school growing up in the 80's. We didn't use the sine wave movement, though. Our teacher learned from ITF before they changed over to using it. Whenever I see it being used, I kind of cringe. Sorry. Haha. I knew a guy who was a big proponent of sine wave movement and would wax philosophic about it whenever it came up, but I never bought it. Your snap and the ability to hold those kicks in the air demonstrate excellent control and mastery of the art. Not crap. Good for you.

    Thank you. We visited a local school and they tried to convince us that using youtube videos was bad. We should have to drive 45 minutes each way to their school and give them a lotta dough to learn them. And share an instructor with all the other students.
    That's a red flag as far as we're concerned. We will attend the school twice a week but to tell us we can't use supplemental material is hogwash. Thanks again.

    • @Tkdtube
      @Tkdtube  Před 19 dny

      I'm curious to know which school you are attending. I hope it is not Saroughi TKD.

      @@Tkdtube This will come back to haunt me if I give their name.
      But my husband was a student of Su Ki Shin in the 1970's and 80's (Silver Medalist for Korea in the Olympics in Judo). He was a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. First degree in Judo. He was on the national championship wrestling team at the University of Iowa and a state boxing finalist in two different states.
      He won Midwest USA titles in both Tae Kwon Do and Judo, made the quarter finals of nationals in 1983. He ran a school but retired in 1986 to coach wrestling, winning five straight state team titles.
      So he was in a pretty good position to select your videos as the ones he wanted to use for our kids. He's old and fat now, lol.
      We still want to give this school a chance. They had a national champion there and when we visited they seemed technically sound. But when calling to ask which set of forms they were doing, we got this speech. So he asked if Chon Ji was the first, and they said yes. So it wasn't Tae Geuk forms or whatever.
      People often think you're stupid when you walk in off the street or call in without credentialing yourself - but why should you have to. So what if there is some minor difference between the videos and a particular club's style - anyone who shows initiative to study additional material outside class should be considered positively.

    I'm a practitioner of Tang Soo Do, and I was curious to see how much both ITF and WTF taekwondo differ from it. I like how they have their own unique forms, whereas Tang Soo Do forms are mostly borrowed from Okinawan/Japanese karate. I also like how ITF stances are deeper than WTF, (which are way too narrow and almost lazy looking in my opinion), although they are still a little bit shallower than TSD. I don't know how I feel about the whole bouncing movements (I think they refer to it as "sine wave"?) This is contrary to what Tang Soo Do and most styles of karate teach, where the head mostly stays level during forms and drill. I imagine that ITF believes the bouncing adds more power, but to me, it reminds me too much of dancing and looks a bit silly. Anyway, I respect the differences and find them fascinating. I just hope that ITF teaches keeping the hands up during fighting unlike the WTF.

My instructor has thrown his hands in the air trying to teach it to me. If you don't do it in sparring then why do it at all. Let's face it, in the ring if you down up down, your opponent will be all over you by the time you hit the second down. It's called telegraphing.

      Well, please don't use this Sabum as a guide to correct Chang Hon patterns (often referred incorrectly as ITF patterns as ITF is an organisation, not a style) as he seems to only focus on the incorrect way Europeans have no realism, stop-start, over-use of knee bounce (and not correct knee-spring), he doesn't look where he's going, minimal hip movement, etc, etc. For some crazy reason for European tournaments they've developed an entirely different way to perform their patterns that is completely distinct from Chang Hon Tae Kwon-do patterns.

    • @MrMeltdown
      @MrMeltdown Před rokem +1

      My instructor explained the sin wave was originally the natural rise and fall from one stance to the next. Leaving a stance bringing the feet together raises your centre of mass only a small amount you then drop into the next stance WITH hip twist. I.e. use both hip twist and sin wave when you can. There was a drive to eliminate hip twist and over exaggerate the sin wave and I think this is the result.

    • @df5826
      @df5826 Před rokem

      @@jakejake9803 I was trained in ITF! I guess I find it "silly" because my club tended to be more sparring focused and less pattern focused. Not to say we didn't do patterns! I was lucky enough to learn from a master who was trained by Lee Sukhi and Park Jong-soo. So we had a very "traditional" club where we had a written test as well as the physical test, to get a yellow belt. We learned the meanings of the belt colours and were meant to embody martial arts not just treat it like a sport. All that aside I guess I personally find it odd to see that additional movement because like you said, telegraphing. :)

    • @damonrambo3244
      @damonrambo3244 Před rokem

      Its called "Sine Wave." MOST ITF schools adhere to it, though not all. You must be from a non-sinewave school.
      Its designed to teach you how to integrate your body and weight into your technique. Boxers and kickboxers do this- watch how they raise up during uppercuts, and drop doing downward angled hooks... there is no telegraphing, because it isnt as pronounced when in the ring. Much the same way we draw our non striking hand back to counterbalance our moves, yet we dont do that in sparring. We overly emphazie everything in our forms, because when we are in a true fighting situation, our bodies are lazy, and only replicate a small percentage of how weve trained.
      Im a practioner and instructor of a sine wave style of TKD- Choong Sil Kwon. I honestly cant imagine doing my forms without it...

    • @df5826
      @df5826 Před rokem

      @@damonrambo3244 I really appreciate you going through the breakdown around why it's done. I mostly figured it was for "show" to emphasize the techniques and didn't really have much use. Hearing how you're doing it to integrate your body weight makes sense but still seems forced and un-natural. Mainly though, being from a club that was second generation ITF (my master was trained by one of Chois Boys ;) ), we didn't have much focus on the "show" of TKD and focused technique and sparring. I always viewed forms as a necessity for training but at tournaments they were really FAKE and just seemed silly. As for being lazy when fighting outside the club, I feel it's less about being lazy and more about being efficient. When you're fighting outside the club there is a need to be efficient and not expose weaknesses that can be exploited. It means you're not focused on your foot sword (because hopefully your muscle memory has that on lockdown) or your chamber, you're thinking about your target and how to hit it as hard and fast as possible while maintaining defensive control. I'd argue it's the entire reason why we spend so much time on forms in the first place. So that when we're not in the dojang, we're still able to have good technique. Keep your kicks up! ;)

      @@df5826 It was Choi himself that invented sinewave. Those whose style dont incorporate it, are actually making a break with the founder.
      Heres an old video of he himself demonstrating the technique... czcams.com/video/HiDuRQtZJdU/video.html
