Hello! Ciro here. This has to have been one of the toughest assignments in modern motoring: design and build a car to replace one of the most iconic cars ever made. The car which pretty much invented the idea of the SUV. The choice of hardcore adventurists the world over...the Land Rover Defender.
That is a weighty nameplate to carry. But the world has certainly changed a lot since 1948, when the Defender was first launched. So, how would Land Rover of today marry the best of times gone by, with the requirements of modern motorists?
This was also an incredibly tough assignment as a journalist, saying anything about the old Defender is fraught with danger, it's like reviewing a sacred cow. But we set out to provide the point of view of myself, someone who is happy to admit that 4x4ing is not one of my finest skills.
I hope you enjoy the video. Let me know what you think about the new Defender in the comments below.

Honestly speaking I love the new Defender, I think my dad has had 6 in the last 35 years, including one with the crank in front, the only reason why he switched to land cruiser was because of load capacity but in terms of off road capability the defender outshines the more reliable cruiser, now all old defender owners will tell you the reason why their elbows were always out was because only really small people could fit in the defender, it also got really hot inside so my dad rubberised them to help with the heat, the seats were horrible but with the right suspension setup(Old Man Emu) my dad would throw the V8 into a hole throw it into first jump out and we would watch it crawl out on it's own(we thought it was magic) but it was great engine compression and a truly legendary vehicle doing what it knows best to bring smiles to our faces, that being said the last one he bought a few years ago he literally gave away because he couldn't sort out the fuelling system and the lucky bugger who bought it sorted it out immediately and 10 years later he still has it.

Look, I'm not a Landy fan but this new Defender is on a next level. In my opinion it's like you get supercars and hypercars this is like a hyper 4x4. I suppose the true test of this vehicle will come down to reliability, that will be the catelyst. Legendary or just another leaking, depreciating 4x4. 🤞

Yes, it looks and does what its built for, very well. But is it for real an overlanding vehicle? No. Too many electronics and ecu's. Too vulnerable to take from Cape Town to Cairo on the worst tracks imaginable. Anyway, it is geared to an urban audience looking for a status symbol. As a 4x4 enthusiast who has travelled a lot in Africa, I would not go near this vehicle. Perhaps an Ineos Grenadier, but for me, let's just say... Toyota. 'Nuff said.

@@pieterOD hi Pieter. I owned a Toyota Landcruiser 76 S/W with the 4,2 donkey diesel. It is slow for sure, but it would be my weapon of choice for a trans Africa overland. Africa was tamed by Land Cruiser, contrary to the claims by Land Rover that is was them. And as a consequence, should one's vehicle be in need of repair, Toyota parts are available everywhere. Having said that, in 8 years of travelling around Africa, including the roughest roads imaginable,my Land Cruiser did not once give me any issue whatsoever. This new Defender will not be able to do the same and when it is in need of repair, where will you find assistance "out there"?

I also feel like Land Rover dropped the ball heavy on the new defender which is basically a discovery. It feels like the era of big 4x4 are being replaced by these pavement SUV. I am.lookinh forward to that Ineos Grenadier thing but again untested.

Good effort by JLR. However, they should spend more time working on how to improve the reliability of their vehicles. No point in having "the most capable" SUV if it's going to spend most of it's time on a flat bed truck or in a mechanic workshop.

Great review, I have no problems with the look and the materials on the inside are really cool, my biggest problem is reliability, not just with the defender, all Land Rovers have been in the spotlight lately on serious electrical and build quality faults, the defender used to be a vehicle you could keep for years, the new one with its air suspension and special fuel filters and predictably high service and maintenance costs will not last, this you buy for leisure only and I don't really think South Africans will part with over a million rand where most of their requirements are met with a korean suv that will last a whole while longer than this. Not well done JLR group, oh and dont forget resale value will drop worse than a stone in water !, JLR should have actually given it a different name and retired the defender badge

@@maandamusetha3564 you are not referring to this car to start with. You said Land Rovers and I'm saying they have been proven to be reliable and still people are held up to that perception of old. You suggested or atleast insinuated not only that it was true BUT Land Rover SHOULD do something about. I'm saying they have done something about it. Hence the latest products. Unless it's your point that the reliability issues are much more recent or as recent as last month, yesterday. Two months back over the past 6 months or in Jan. I'm saying recent JLR products are redeeming themselves already. It's just the perception is still out there. It's hard to kill perception. In any case keep well.

Check out TFL car channel they bought one and it threw check engine light after going offroad once. A day after being fixed a whole bunch of toys stopped working (cameras, etc) and LR struggled to fix it. Eventually, an engineer was called in and diagnosed it as a problematic computer module which is now on backorder with no ETA. This is one a 1-week old defender. Yip, it seems the reliability concerns are justified. Such a shame.

More than enough space for long journey's, enough power to pull a heavily loaded trailor, not worrying to much over the kids messing on the seats on long journey's because of the materials cleaning so easily, a good looking SUV with modern skin. The only big problem is.......... Yes, you guessed it, reliability. I guess it's to early to tell if this one joins the pack. I do live near one so ido see it myself with my eyes and as i pulled up to one in my m5 car is say to theman lets go lets race you have a new car bud hedid note hear my voice my hewas sitting too high up to hear me so i pushed the music on and decided to leaveim alone itwas good fun. Awesome vehicle but its too complex, the tech will go wrong sooner or later and will cost an arm and a leg to fix after the motor plan. It's another car to throw away after 5 years. I really hate where car companies are going. I really wish they will release a far simpler and cheaper version without all the electronics and toys. Like a bigger Jimny.

Isn’t the reality that Land Rover needed to produce a successor to the old Defender that was at least as capable off-road as it’s predecessor and much, much better on road as well? It’s a bit like comparing modern architecture with a country cottage. Both have their place but in 2020/21 it would be crazy to be pulled into producing a Defender/Toyota/Nissan look alike clone. The Grenadier may be a neat clone of the old car but at its likely price with accessories it’s doubtful that it will appeal to farmers who seem to prefer Utes and old Toyotas. The previous Defender seems to have become a hobby car with all the pluses and minuses that entails. Credit to Land Rover for producing a new car that has reasonable looks and a class leading but simple interior and modern technology . The big question is now how reliable will it be?

Well personally would not touch it no place near a hilux and its reliability every new broom sweeps clean....that's only good for a shopping mall statement . good luck let's see it at 600,000 kilos and 15 years time.....

I think max km for shopping etc is maybe 50 ks. I live in Durbanville CT. Perfect for quick shopping and getting some milk. Protected from the elements. Poor evaluation of th car. Oh, where do you find a Polo for 70 K.

No doubt the new defender is a better machine. In almost every way.
My main issue with it however is the more you dent it the uglier it will look.
With the old defender a dent was considered a beauty spot.
This is important if you want to take the car seriously off road.

It's such a pity that Land Rover has missed the goal. They have outpriced themselves completely. Only government officials can now afford Land/Range Rovers. I predict Defender will be dead within 5 years.
Please bring the Ford Bronco to SA - now THAT will sell.
And Ciro is an underrated superstar - even Elon Musk watches his reviews 😜
