Been through exactly the same struggle with my e87 120d. It's crazy how much knowledge and effort it takes just to keep DPF regenerating. It took me awhile to get it sorted and the same trick deleting dpf errors while driving on the highway worked for me as well. Also some fuel additives helped as a preventative measure. Glad it worked for you. It's also ironic that so much extra fuel was burned just trying to make emission system work.

  • @craigchamberlain
    @craigchamberlain Před 2 lety +14

    A couple of quick points:
    1. You can clear fault codes in ISTA without turning off the ignition. What I do is go into the DDE controller and set up a few measured values such as regen status, exhaust temp etc because these are handy to monitor while attempting a regen. Exhaust temp has to be above 250C (IIRC) but once regen kicks in you'll see it climb to 500C or higher. There is a separate tab in the user interface in ISTA which lets you trigger operations such as clearing the fault memory. So I just go back and forwards between measured values and clearing codes. This is of course after requesting forced regen in ISTA service functions for the DPF.
    2. One of the DPF fault codes will always come back unless you go through the DPF replacement process in ISTA. I don't know the code off the top of my head but it's the one related to the service life of the DPF and is either mileage dependent or dependent on predicted ash loading. In any case, this code does NOT prevent regen. The codes that prevent regen are the ones related to back pressure being too high as well as others like glow plugs that you already mentioned. The back pressure related fault code will keep coming back every time you exceed the maximum BP allowed for a given RPM and this is why continually clearing that code helps to maintain regen. What you need to do when driving is just squeeze the throttle pedal just enough to maintain the required minimum speed without creating too much back pressure.

Thank you for clarifying that this DPF service life code does not prevent DPF regens. This is the only code I have so I will attempt a regen this weekend.

I had this problem on my E90 320D also (the DPF error appeared on display) but the reason comes from EGR. The EGR was a model with one flap controlled by elecrovalve and that flap was blocked. The error was something like "flap in wrong position" or something like that.I change the EGR with one without flap and to "force" the DPF regeneration i use my phone connected to Carly (was easy and handy to erase the error quickly). After 2 hours driving on high way the DPF error didnt come again but i drove another 2 hours to be sure and now are almost 2 years and everything is perfect. Best regards from Romania and thank you for all your videos and information !

According to BMW service manual to start DPF regen, you need to make DPF errors 480A/245700 and 481A/245800 to be “currently not present“. This should happen after 45 minutes faster drive on highway. So, there is probably no point of constant deleting the stored faults during driving...

Hello, thanks for the video. Is it possible to have the opposite issue? Too frequent DPF regenerations because of a stuck reset interval or something? When I scan my DPF with an app I often observe one log that is always the same - 107k mileage and 64% full which is not normal. The car has more mileage and also it can not be 64% exactly every time. Sometimes I observe dynamic logs 320+ km and different %. So I think that this 107k mileage and 64% log is forcing the car to start often regenerations. Thanks!

VERY GOOD. MY ONE COMMENT WOULD BE THAT IT IS IN FACT THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMP BECAUSE IT IS THE HEAT IN THE EXHAUST THAT BURNS OFF THE PARTICULATES. REGARDLESS, IF YOU BRING THE VEHICLE UP TO NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND DRIVE FOR 20-40 MINUTES STEADILY AT APPROX 2500RPM THE EXHAUST WILL REACH THE HIGHER TEMPERATURES TO BURN OFF THAT CRAP. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS!

Just an update. I tried this on my son's e90 and it worked and I was able to do a forced regen. Happy days?? Not quite....., the same error mesage came back again 200km later.
I ended up removing the dpf filter and cleaning it with Wynns off car dpf cleaner. This took a couple of hours to clean plus washing out with a garden hose pipe and water. I refittted the dpf and reset the dpf, now the exhaust back pressure is extremely low on idle. Less than 1mbar. This indicates that the dpf is now clean and the car is driving fine.
So in summary, you must take note of the exhast back pressure readings. Before cleaning this was 26mbar on idle. In my case , following the procedure above of clearing the 048A code and doing the forced regen was not enough.

Things appear to have changed. Back in the day when I worked on diesels the glow plugs only came for a very short time on cold start up. My diesel has glow a plug light. My start up process is turn on ignition. Glow plug light comes on & as soon as it goes out start the engine. Not starting for say a minute allows the plugs to cool & the engine becomes difficult to start. Much the same as trying to start the engine before the glow plug light has gone out. I don’t have a car with the filter. Why, I live about 5 miles from town. It’s a fifty limit between home & town. Anyone with a filter needs to spend about half an hour a month running up and down a dual carriageway at 60mph plus to keep their filter clean.

I think there is another easier solution, is to use ISTA in service function select ‘Replace’ DPF, this will trick the car into thinking it’s got a new DPF fitted and it will reset the counter in the ECU, this way you don’t get any error fault (DTC) codes, then take the car on a motorway for a full regeneration, hopefully there will no fault codes appearing up again and avoid the hassle of keep clearing fault codes for it regenerate.

    • @francisrich1731

      Thermostat is the main cause.
It's a mechanical device and needs regular replacing as it wears out (spring weakens) and it opens at well below 75°. So like the op says you need to clear all codes and have a good thermostat and clear codes as they arise. At some point the parameters of 75° coolant and 200° exhaust gas are met.

This sounds like a logic fault in the ECU firmware, it should be: if DPF needs regen error code is active, and DPF regen parameters are met, then allow it to regen.
The conspiracy theorist would say this has been designed to attract more service visits.

My dpf can't regenerate because of a faulty Brake vacuum sensor. This prevents Start/stop from functioning which in turn prevents dpf regen .. so I've been told

Simple solution buy a diesel older than 2009 then you will have no problems like this, as on these newer cars the FPF is designed to destroy our cars quicker, this whole process is long winded and mechanics are laughing and making money off us.
