    unclebeneller
Hey guys! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller, back again with Weekend Wankshop 262. In this lesson, i'm going to show you the keys to instant fretboard freedom by just learning two easy-to-visualize patterns for the major (ionian) and minor (aeloean) scales!!! They're extremely simple and will work perfectly in ANY key.
If you can master these simple 3+4 2 string scale shapes, you can root them off of ANY string and blaze away. Its SO much easier than trying to visualize gigantic 6 string patterns while moving across the neck. Plus, you get the HUGE added benefit of learning how find root notes on any string all over the board. Once you start LOOKING for those notes as roots, you're going to start finding them!
I designed this E minor shred lick as a great way to learn these shapes, but its also killer alternate picking practice, too. I played it as sextuplets (6 notes per beat) at 110 BPM in the intro, but its TOTALLY possible to get it WAY beyond that! Try messing with the phrasing of the 3+4 scale shapes and see what you can come up with. Combine these patterns with the high speed phrasing ideas in last week's Sick Sick Sixes lesson and you're going to dominate the world. And don't forget to sign up for patreon and get that bonus video showing you all 7 modes of the major scale, then you'll REALLY be cooking!

Fretjam is a killer channel too, especially if you're interested in theory!

This is a whole new fresh(and musical) way to practice scale shapes. I've even took this a step further by opening with the low E the minor shape. At the moment since I just learned the run, I can't even get to Stepdad speed, more like red-headed stepchild sloow speed.
But I'm already beginning to see the possibilities, and even doing "escape" runs anywhere along the sequence, and starting to figure out which box shapes are under my fingers at any point.
This is some seriously good stuff Uncle Ben 🙏

This was a good lesson. Reasons 1. it made me consider the notes that went in to the scales more helping me learn the fretboard as well as basic theory 2. easy freestyle routine. I ended up just kinda forgetting about the notes for awhile and just jamming out this slow steve vai esque solo with exaggerated slow vibratos and realized I was just ripping fade to black by metallicas combined with another song, but it sounded beautiful and I had a good hour of jamming based on this one trick where as I was feeling stuck for a few days before that. Thanks

I have studied, and attempted to study theory on multiple occasions, but I just tend to lose interest and always forget stuff. Especially scale shapes, if I think of them as boxes like a lot of people probably do. It just doesn't click with me.
