The T12 florescent bulbs and ballasts belong in a museum.
Thank you for the tip on this brand. I have found the light so great that I only have to use 1 - T8 tube per fixture (T8/T12). Debating about 2 per fixture in the shop though. With 11 fixtures swapped out, could not be happier. Same with our garden seedlings, they are doing so much better under the LED lights than the old florescent. Thank you for all your videos, learning a lot. Tip for anyone reading, keep the ballast fixed (electrically bypassed), it helps to balance the fixture if hanging from chains, especially if only using 1 tube per fixture.
thanks, I put up a video of the modifying the fixture. also I use the daylight bulbs can be used as grow light for less money.
I use the same brand, when I bought them from amazon, they include the non shunted socket for each bulb.
best
I just bought some Feit Electric LED 4ft T8 tubes at Costco, they are instant on and bright, 4100k color, 17w, $37 for a pair. They are coated with a white frost so you don't see the individual LED's. Last winter I bought LED tubes from Home Depot and they didn't work on the same fixture. The problem I was having with the old T12 bulbs was it was too cold in my kitchen during the winter months and they didn't want to light up. These new LED lights don't seem to care how cold it is, they just instantly light up. I installed them with the power on at night, when the first one came on I almost fell over backwards it was so bright. I highly recommend replacing fluorescent tubes with modern instant on LED tubes, they just work better.
Thanks for the money saving suggestions.
My electric bill keeps decreasing watching you videos.Love this one for my shop. Hope soon to get solar panels. Have learned so much from you. Keep up the info on educating us. Thanks.
+Brent Congleton That's really great to hear.Your welcome Brent.
Hallelujah he's got a proper mic!
Nice to know about the ballast..
Thank you for making these videos and sharing your knowledge. I have learned a lot and it really does help with the electric bill. :)
Thanks for watching!
The bulbs are all still working. We even have four tubes that switch on and off probably 10 times per day at least. The Led's don't seem to mind this.
thanks jeff,,as always ,great ,usefull,info
awesome video like always tons of good info we can use thanks a lot!
Your welcome
thanks for still making videos. your channel should have more followers!! so much money could be saved!
+ri mar Thanks Ri Mar
Hey Jeff, good to see you haven't completely retired and are still making videos! I've learned a lot from your vids. atb!
+Valerifon1 Thanks. Nope, no retirement yet.
I was comparing Hyperikon and Philips L.E.D. tubes to install them in my remodeled kitchen that was enlarged, and your video was really helpful on my pick. I'm placing an order today at Amazon. Again thanks for the good work and advice buddy, I'll upload a video to help anyone else's pick.
So far the Hyperikon's are working just fine. Let ya know in a couple of years.
+MissouriWindandSolar Thanks, same here, will let you know it's behavior in a year and in a couple years. Have a good one.

technology keeps changing .yes the price of led lights keep coming down its hard to know what brand to use. good info. thanks
+Roy Amberg Your welcome Roy
thanks for sharing
Making my list for solar needs and this is fantastic. This would be perfect for my gardening shop. I like the bulbs too. The lights in my small home all need to be replaced before I get the solar up and running. Thank you!
+Sheila6325 Your welcome.
Recently Shifted to 9w LEDs made by Philips to replace some CFLs, the Soft/Warm White variants are pretty pleasing as well The new Ballasts are pretty nifty to install as well.
Excellent
question: my case where the fluorescent tube fit have a starter switch (small tubular things) do i remove those ?
Hey Jeff...cool video man. Is there any flicker with those LED bulbs?
+Chris DIYer No flicker at all.
What about the Rf?
Hi, would you still recommend the same type and brand. " hyperacon" in June 2020?
I have put in about 50 LED bulbs from over a dozen different companies, the only one I had go out on me so far was a bulb from ViriBright. It may be bad luck, but that is my experience. I even have some cheap bulbs I got off ebay over 5 years ago that are still going strong. You do get much better bulbs with more money though, more light for the same power.
+GoogleMinus That's good to know.
My current T8 lights and ballasts cause radio interference when they are on. No radio channels work. Do these LED replacements effect radios? Or do they have suppression? I do have the magnetic things in case but was just wondering before switching.
I'm not sent you a comment already just what's the name of the website to buy the LED bulbs thank you
Crappy electronic ballasts have replaced the old ballasts that lasted for decades, when I bought a ca 1910 building here, the fluorescent lamps all had ballasts dated to as I remember- 1950 or 1953, and they were working just fine!
Now you put these stupid electronic ballasts in the last number of years and they start just failing one by one, most say "made in Mexico".
The 1950 fixtures were made in America by "Universal" as I remember in NJ from the label. I'd say the ballasts weighed a good 10 pounds each, they were big heavy units and their power input was not bad, replacing those with new Magnetik ballasts saves very little, but if the old one burned out there wasn't much choice.
I like the Hyperikon bulbs, I bought the integrated 4' shop lights for the basement, WOW what a difference!
The thing, is, they are 120v ac so if you WANTED to run them on solar/wind it seems ridiculous to produce DC then rectifiy and convert it to 120v ac, and then when it goes in the fixture it gets changed again to run the LED bulbs! a lot of conversion losses in there that could be eliminated with 12vdc LED's to begin with.
have 40' x 50' x 12'celieng . how many bright white led's do I need and what spacing / HOW MANY can I run together before I need a plug in ? can I use 8" LED ?
okay i use LED lighting only all through my 100% off grid home and i know that when used full time that LED lights start to dim within 3-6 months of use... so my question to you is can you do an update review at say 6 months and then 12 months and tell us how the brightness is holding up? im tired of spending money on what is supposed to be excellent LED lights just to have them go dull after a few months.
+FixedByDoc Homesteading The Cree light bulbs have worked great for over a year now.
If you use the type where you leave in the ballast how much more power is used due to the ballast at a minimum applying resistance/load to the circuit?
+Elite Ammunition, Jay Wolf never mind answered my question as I was typing it.
How bright is the 4 foot LED light Jeff? Wondering how it would compare with a grow light for starting plants. Thank you for the video.
+Larry342516 They say it works for grow lights.
Sorry, answered at the end of the video.
👍
If you take out the ballast - how do you wire the led tub in?
+D.T. Grosz It comes with instructions that show you how to do that.
z Thanks again man
What about sub zero temperatures, my CFL's dont work in unheated garage
+wileycsg never mind, question answered at the end of video
Do you have a link to the LED tube bulb?
+BUDDY LIGHT I will get it on today.
Jeff how are these bulbs holding up? Have any burned out?
+Jb Hanson None have burned out yet JB. We will see in about a year if there all still going and i believe they will hold up to what the manufacture said they would.
you do a lot of good videos explaining solar . batteries and other things but the one thing you have never done a video on is battery placement ( unless I mist it someplace ?) . Its winter now and you see some channels that have power issues ( " my batteries are sulfated " ) every winter when in fact it is the location of the batteries that is the issue so I think if you did a video on battery location it would help a lot of people . Thanks for all you videos.
+I AM Troll I have done some of those. There is a battery desulfator that we have hooked up right now to some batteries that's suppose to keep your batteries FROM sulfating up. It uses the battery power to do it.
I am going to do a video on it.
MissouriWindandSolar what I meant was the location of batteries if you don't have skirting on your house or cabin don't set your batteries in a box on the floor the winter cold will reduce there efficiency
How about a link for the bulbs
+Howard Charleboix Sure, i will get that link on.
one question to you, why is your shop not solar?
+Buddy Phelps My shop is on solar. This building is run 100 percent by wind and solar, there is no grid on this building.
+Buddy Phelps even if you produce free energy you still wish to conserve the energy you use. by using less power to have the same needs means you don't have to have a bigger system to generate the power, then the money you save can be used for other things like maple walnut fudge, or batteries.
Jeff, does the old rule about changing light bulbs and fixtures still hold true? What I mean is that when the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs came out they said don't change out the old incandescent bulbs with the new CFs until the old bulbs quit working [burned out] because it cost more in money and natural resources than the savings in replacing a working bulb and that the end-user cost wasn't offset enough by the reduced electrical use of the CFs. In short, they said it costs the consumer more out-of-pocket money to replace a WORKING bulb than the money realized by the reduced energy use of the new bulb. As my old CFs have burned out - I've replaced them with LED bulbs - I love my LED bulbs. I have several Fluorescent tube fixtures that will take the new LED tubes but, I plan on waiting until the old bulbs quit to replace them - what's your opinion? Unfortunately, I'm still on-grid but, I could see where if you were off-grid you would want to change out all of the lights immediately. Thanks for the videos.
+David Duvall Your welcome.
For me it's a big savings at the store. We have about 100 4 foot florescent bulbs in the place. The LED's cut my power in almost half.
+David Duvall If i had incandesent bulbs through my house i would throw them out and replace them with the LED bulbs. Your electric bill will drop fast.
if I recall your name right it's Jeff I need to know what's the website of the light bulbs and the above is that you have that you're showing on this CZcams video my brother wants get LEDs in his Workshop and I'm going to try to help him out to save a lot of money 2 thank you very much if you can reply to me if you can I would appreciate it thank you very much have a great day my friend
With all do respect sir. But daaaaam you sound just like Cheech!!
Something isn't jiving here, Jeff. 18 watt LED is equiv to 40 watt fluorescent whereas the LED cfl replacement is 9 vs 10/11 watts of the actual CFL. If you look a LED saves, or is supposed to save, a max of 1% over a fluorescent bulb so that 18w vs 40w I bet you does not really put out the same lumens when measured. It will help that it is clear vs the powder coated flu bulb but I can't stand the LEDS unshielded they don't look right (reason the CFL replacement is diffused).
Do you have a link to the LED tube bulb?
