can thran be the target of colorless spell or abilities?
Thank you for mentioning Ria Ivor on this list, Prof! She’s VERY good and definitely deserves the spot you gave her for exactly the reasons you’ve mentioned
Far better actually why you ask well toxic is a combat trigger like vigilance so unlike infect you don't actually have to deal damage to trigger it. By extent low mana good power toxic creatures are insane in the deck.
@@theodorheidhues2566 so that’s untrue, sadly. If the damage is fully prevented, such as with Ria Ivor making Mites, the creature with the prevented damage doesn’t deal toxic alongside the damage as the damage just doesn’t happen, as a result. I just consulted a local judge and he said the relevant CR rulings for toxic are 120.3g and 702.164c
Though to be frank I don’t know why 120.3c is the ruling as that’s about planeswalker-focused damage anyway
@@theodorheidhues2566 I will however say too that in terms of overwhelming the opposition with Mites you’ll potentially instead want high-power creatures over low-power ones, toxic or no
I wasn't planning to make a deck out of any of the legendaries from this set. Not because they were bad, at all...but because I simply don't have the money for every set.
Then I went to a simple draft at a friends house. First booster I open gets me a borderless, ichor art Elesh Norn: Mother of Machines.
I now have an Elesh Norn deck......AND I LOVE IT!!!
I actually really enjoy how monocolored this set is. As this list illustrates, practically all of the most pushed commanders aren't multicolored this time, which feels like a nice little throwback. It's a really cool and intentional way to explore the warped color pie found on New Phyrexia.
I love you prof
Everyone loves prof

Who doesn’t

He’s mine, back off
Love the Farscape reference! That series doesn't get enough love or respect!
Urtet is the commander I have been waiting years for. I love Myr and am excited to finally have a great commander for them. Just in testing I have found so truly amazing combos.
The way you delivered "...Mother" was beautiful Professor!
I’ve already got an Urtet deck put together. Thought a Myr tribal would be fun and I couldn’t be happier with how its turned out. Super fun
Hey Prof, love your videos. For your #5, since Ria has a targeted ability, and your example creature, Mirran Crusader is protection from black, you won't be able to get the value you want from it. Give it the boot for another cheap big creature. Maybe Archfiend of the Dross from this set. A 6/6 for 4 mana and $0.50.
I swear that Archfiend makes me wanna run Vampire Hexmage even more
It also would onyl trigger det mites on the first strike. So it would only get half. Of course irrelevant, since it can't be targeted, but still.
@@andersfrandsen7077 You only get mites if it hits a player, and it's pretty unlikely that the first strike hits but the second doesn't when it's not blocked.
@@ReyosBlackwood You get Mites *the next time* combat damage is dealt to a player. So if it triggers on first strike damage it will not trigger on regular damage.
@@JasonOshinko Good point, a lot of mistakes in Prof's analysis of Ria Ivor.
Just in case anyone was actually wondering, because Dominus is a latin word ending in "us", when you pluralize it, it it often becomes an i
Singular: Unus Dominus
Plural: Multi Domini
"We'll be looking at five of them" raises 6 fingers.... I'm in
Elesh Norn Mother of Machines is strong, but probably works better as being in the 99 of a multicolored ETB focused deck, rather than as the commander IMO. I'd personally put Chiss-Goria as being even more potent than her.
True, you see it at the table and you're like, better have removal/counterspell ready for when they cast her
Too bad she is not made out of jet skis 🥺
Yeah, i don't see her deck doing much without her in play, which, considering how much of a target she is, I feel like makes the deck rather toothless. I feel like some people are gonna shuffle machine mommy up, watch her get countered / removed repeatedly while their deck doesn't really do anything.
It's one thing to have a kill-on-sight commander, but the deck needs to be functional without the commander, and I don't see any deck arising in mono-white that can do that.
Chiss exiles 5 cards forever each attack thats pretty horrible unless ur ALL IN on combo. Even then its really fragile
@@mr.joesterr5359 It does indeed, but there are multiple ways to control the top of the deck to mitigate this to an extent - divining top, scroll rack come to mind - and the sheer velocity and value generated by Chiss often more than makes up for it by being able to often case your best artifact out of 5 cards often for free given affinity. That is incredibly powerful and often just plays like "Exile 4 cards from your deck to play an artifact spell for free," which is well worth the cost.
I also don't think it's that fragile of a deck - Chiss has haste and also has affinity for artifacts so you can often recast them without any issues re: commander tax. The only real vulnerability it has are board wipes that hit artifacts, but every artifact deck faces that issue and has to come up with its own ways to try to play around it. Particularly comparing Chiss to Elesh Norn, red is the color with access to Dockside Extortionist* and the like, and I'd generally put the Chiss deck being in a better monocolor package with access to a more dangerous suite of cards overall to put it ahead of Elesh Norn.
* Obviously Elesh Norn herself shuts down Dockside Extortionist, but comparing Chiss into the average pod vs Elesh Norn, I think the Chiss deck still comes out ahead. In the specific Chiss vs Elesh Norn matchup, Elesh Norn is often going to be removed by multiple players whereas Chiss's discount on casting cost and haste often ensures you will get immediate value out of the card on the turn it is played.
I'm hyped to built a Flicker Deck with the new Atraxa
All my hype is focused on Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch.
5 color Myr Tribal sounds hilarious.
Same Bro
got one in my first Phyrexia AWBO set booster ^^
I'm interested in building Malcator and the New Atraxa, once we know what Battle is as a card type.
Thanks for the video Prof.!
I'm honestly really liking the new Atraxa and am building a semi blink deck around it haha
I opened Atraxa at pre release, built a commander with her and allready played it. It's super fun but can get a little bit annoying for the rest of the table when you have her etb like 3-4 for times on the stack. And it works so much better than my Niv-Mizzet Reborn deck!
Keeps was a great suggestion. I used your link prof! Commander advice and making me look good. Double win!
Good video prof! I’m excited to build a deck around Glissa Sunslayer. A Golgari first strike deathtouch with built in removal, card draw, and debuff! For just 3 mana!
“Where going to be looking at five(✋+☝️) of them.” 🧐 🤔
I'm a total been to MTG, and basically just got into commander so I don't have to build my own decks. Thanks for the commander centric videos, helps me wade through all the cards. I also knew you as "the mtg professor" haha, so I came here as soon as I started playing.
Nice video. The cherry on top for me was seeing Dominar Rygel appear a few seconds. Frellin' nice.
My favorite commander from this set is Karumonix the rat king, always fun to have more rats!
Unless you're playing against said rats, I stay far away from rat players lol
who's the best commander for a rat tribal deck?
@@LadyLunarSatine From what I've seen doing research, Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm is a really good commander, but with Conspiracy Karumonix can be a huge threat
I love this video style I legit wanna build them all and probably will build them in forge eventually buying the deck i like most. you also showed me a few cards I can use to pump up my red green poison deck i made from the grapeshot video you made.
0:35 Love this bit Prof! Keep up the great work you do xD
I appreciate that you proudly held up six fingers while saying the number "five". This is why I keep coming back.
I like all 5 of your picks and the cards built around them. I will make some new Commander decks. Thanks for the video Professor.
Thrum singlehanded helped me go 2-1-0 at my first ever prerelease - thanks for showing him some love!
As always, a wonderful video with great plans Prof. :)
Just wanted to point one thing out though for anyone wanting to follow this; in the Ria Ivor example, Mirran Crusader won't do exactly what you want it to. Since it has protection from black, Ria can't target it to have it's damage prevented to make mites. It could still be good in the deck depending on how you want to run the deck, but that is something to be mindful of!
Thank you professor,a great video. I'm a new player still learning the different colors and how they play(haven't even played with red or green). Watching shuffle up and play, has played a major role in my decision to learn MTG. Playing arena and having lots of fun, maybe one day I can play paper magic, but I don't have the money or friends rn lol😭
Regarding #5, there *has* to be a card in magic worded such that you can attack yourself (most likely in the "create tapped and attacking" or "attack target player" area).
With cover of Darkness you can actually name Phyrexian which might help a few extra creatures get it in with that effect.
While that’s very true, Mite means you don’t necessarily have to feel pressured into running Phyrexians and keeps your opponents from potentially capitalizing upon the more popular creature type
The one commander I'm looking forward to building is Ovika, Enigma Goliath. A super aggressive deck for the color combo it's in.
I love the new glissa as leader of a deathtouch deck! First strike and deathtouch, and a pentalty for the defending player for not blocking? It's wonderful!
2:12 “Domini!”
“When Phyrexia reshaped the surface of Mirrodin, parts of the very land took on a mind of its own. Entire mountains began to move, becoming godlike Phyrexian creatures known as the Domini.”
I look forward to finally building an Izzet Spells list behind Ovika. People at my LGS thought I was lying to them as I read that card out
Honestly I wasnt gonna make any new commander deck as I was focused more on cards for the 99 of my other decks ... until you mentioned Thrun voltron that is! That sound like so much fun and that was my prerelease card!
As a pilot of an old Thrun Voltron deck, I can confirm that he is the best boi
2:43 Reach and flying are my favorite game warping abilities!
Yay, I love it! I got a Thrunn at my pre-release, gotta brew a bit Thanks, Prof!
I'm gonna build a combat trick Glissa with few eqs, little bit of voltrony style but mostly with cards protecting her - you can't kill her, you can't efficiently block her ;d Phyrexian arena on a stick seems good enough for casual purpose ;p
Thrun is a beast and absolutely dominates in limited also. The winner in our prerelease tournament built a deck around him and won all 8 games in a row
I picked up the #5 choice in a draft last week. Was a great card to build around.
I've waited 10 years for 5 color myr tribal, urtet my beloved.
I feel like Elesh Norn, by herself, will make people replace a creature with an ETB removal ability with a targeted removal spell.
@@MrCenturion13 Aww it's okay. If they want to play Elesh Norn I just put away the Happy Hippo Group Hug and take out the infect.
Counterspells, beast within, stp and path are usually in decks, right? 😅
Commander games become “leave the blue player alone so they can hold up counter magic specifically to counter norn”
@@paulbbryan I have an elish norn deck that’s build around toxic and infect.
@@ryanbollinger1759 sure, that sounds like a great idea for a type of deck to take out to give someone the hint that they're playing overcompetitive and unfun stuff ^^
Am I the only one that loves Atraxa? Sure, it takes a while to bring her out. But the payoff is worth it. Blinking her in and out to trigger her ETB effect multiple times along with creatures like Elesh Norn that let you trigger it twice makes her super OP when you can finally afford her.
2:13 Gotta get all up in those Dominussies.
YESSSS! That foil Onslaught Cover of Darkness I've been sitting on is about to SkyRocket because of this video!!!! YESSSSS!!!!!!!
✌️😎🤙
Elesh norn is going right into my Myrkul, Lord of Bones deck!
6.30 : I think naming phyrexian to cover of darkness is way better than calling mites, since it at least also includes our commander
Prof, your tie game is the best on CZcams. Most people talk about your jackets, but not I. I speak of the tie.
Always good to hear from the prof before we start building our commander decks each set!
OMG Farscape reference. I love that show!
I honestly think 'when one of your creatures becomes tapped...' is my favorite thing to read in mtg.
I was planning on rebuilding my Mono green deck, and did pull Thrunn when I bought a set booster box. Now i know who my new mono green will be.
Ones I'm excited for but weren't mentioned
Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut (because I absolutely will do meme things and say the word "bitch" a lot)
Kethek, Crucible Goliath (because making a deck where Kethek is the most expensive creature that just dumps free creatures every turn sounds super fun)
Melira, the Living Cure (because FUCK POISON COUNTERS)
Definitely a fun set for people that love counters and tokens though.
Aristocrat style decks are eating good with this set and a Kethek commander deck sounds pretty fun.
I did brew both Graaz and Kethek and they both seems super fun to play.
Graaz I did a token based Artifact creature deck so once Graaz hit the board it is smashing time
With Kethek I decide to abuse the nonlegendary clause of it to try to get a persist combo going
Urtet, the King of all Myr is sad to be missing from this prestigious list! 🤖
Great analysis of Phyrexias new powerful cards!
I wouldn't run it as commander, but Otharri, Sun's Glory is another source of experience counters that fits into mardu colours (Kelsien the Plague as commander), which I've been greatly enjoying. I love experience counters so much.
Managed to get a copy of thrun yesterday, monogreen time!
The "shuffle up and play" episode clipped at the end of this looks fantastic and I want to watch it, but I can't find it and it isn't linked :(
Is it just not uploaded yet? Later this week I hope?
I built Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres with a focus in infecting my opponents then proliferating. I'm loving it so far!
I think Ria Ivor doesn't work with double strike. I think you only get mites for the first strike. Correct me if I'm wrong + Protection from black can't target it
The last point you’re correct about. Re: double strike, you can still get mileage out of that if you simply copy aria’s triggered ability with something like Lithoform Engine or Strionic Resonator. (While Ria says “prevent the next time”, to paraphrase, two instances means the second one waits for regular combat damage after the first instance prevents the first strike damage.)
Great video! More like this please!
I instantly fell in love with Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut the moment I saw it and knew I just had to build it. It’s mostly just a lot of mana dorks and token makers alongside stuff like Clockwork Dragon, Pentavus, and Kaldra Compleat. Just pure, big, dumb, turn-your-brain-off fun.
Hey Prof. Just want to know the title of the music during the Keeps ad. Thanks and more power.
I don't have time to build an All Will Be One commander deck, previews for March of the Machines have started!
I've got to theory-craft about decks I'll never make because I'm done with each set after prerelease!
Built Chiss Goria to complete my line of mono colored decks and he's pretty fun. Can go voltron with strong equipment to get for free or just get big beaters out like trinaform or triplicate titan.
I believe since double strike deals damage in two stages, only the first strike damage will transition to mites for Ria Ivor and then it will be regular damage for the second stage of damage.
I will say that I am pretty excited to build a Thrun voltron deck and a Zopandrel ramp deck. These might be a bit simple-minded, but I like what they offer. Ovika offers an interesting way of playing Izzet. Out of the commander precons, Vishgraz, the Doom Hive, interests me the most.
The Rygel Farscape reference caught me completely off guard. And now I want Brian to do an off topic episode about Farscape.
I loved Farscape
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Such a great show. Tons of heart, and the aliens felt both more alien and more alive that in any other show.
Prof has a good sense of humor and I love it haha.
It should be noted that Ria Ivor does not work as you expect with Mirran Crusader, it would only effect 3 of the 6 damage because double strike means you're doing 2 instances of damage, and Ria Ivor would only prevent the first strike damage.
Mirran Crusader also has protection from black so Ria's ability cannot target it
@@AsgardianShadow Good catch, didn't even notice that it wouldn't work at all.
I love the throwback to OG Thrun
I'm pretty sure Unctus is the most powerful, curving perfectly into a 2 card Infinite loop.
What's the other card?
@@jlateralus21 Aphetto Alchemist
@@nilesamon7577 thanks, I guess I didn't know it could target itself. Makes sense now!
This script is so well written. Nice one prof!
I‘m still waiting for your next secret lair video regarding the superdrop 🎉
I'm a little surprised you didn't even mention Ovika, enigma goliath. I originally decided to build her as an alternative goblin lord to Krenko, and I quickly realized that she is not a goblin tribal deck. Ovika is literally a storm combo deck. Just add any way to sacrifice goblins for mana and you can go off. I had one game that went like this: Turn 1 play Ovika. Turn 2 play One with the multiverse, make 8 goblins, play mnemonic deluge for free targeting treasure cruise, make 9 goblins. Draw 9 cards and make 24 more goblins from the treasure cruises. Next turn play Coat of arms. Deck is insanely fun.
Totally gonna make a budget venser deck soon. Hyper aggro toxic proliferation! But god the others look Fantastic!
I feel Venser, Corpse Puppet should be an honorable mention too but I'm just partial to him. His proliferation trigger can go multiple times so long as you have a good source. An old favorite of mine is contagion engine. In a proliferation deck it's a slow death for your opponents built up board and the double proliferate on the engine ensures that when your ready, your can always at least have a 3/3 flying life link whenever you need.
I gave up on single target removal a while ago, I always run boardwipes and ways to make my stuff indestructible in all my decks.
i was not even aware of that green commander and now im very interested
It wins limited events so hard, until the opp has green fight/ bite cards lol
I pulled a slobad during a draft and I'm really excited to make a commander deck with, I'm thinking a grul colors deck
Wouldn't Aerial Extortionist also usable to your benefit while having Elesh Norn on the table? You could exile your own Sun Titan and cast it again (or any other ETB permanent exiled this way)
Most looking forward to building the new Ezuri with some aggro toxic/infect creatures followed by a wave of proliferation (along with some other proliferation targets like charge based mana rocks for ramp and strixhaven stadium as an alt win con)
Omg the Farscape reference!
I've been running Skrelv, Defector Mite and I love running him. He's just a little guy which helps him from getting targeted too. It also has a high chance of making sure that your opponent won't be able to block your creatures that get buffed by him. It works great against mono colored decks too
I put Ovika in charge of my *mostly* precon prismari deck and have won both games i played with it. It's quite a scary commander
Hearing Prof say "double mommies" has made my day
So with Ria, if the double strike creature deals damage does it only prevent the first instance of damage and not both?
Just the first. However, if you want to get both, you can copy the triggered ability with Strionic Resonator or Lithoform Engine and you’ll get it on both connecting hits, one after the other (this is especially useful for Bronze Guardian!).
I finished Solphim yesterday. Planning on brewing up Vishgraaz but playing into more insect themes, mite generation, and even pests. I’m still thinking of a deck name.
I have always wondered what you would look like with just the stash
Im trying a build around vishgraz interested to see what I can do with these colors
If I understand it correctly, Ria Ivor doesn't work with double strike like you think it does. It will only convert the first strike phase damage into mites and the normal phase damage will go through as normal.
Currently in the works of a Ezuri Toxin/Infect Proliferate Deck. It has toxin and small infect cards to guarantee everyone has at least one poison counter when Ezuri comes in. Add a ton of ramp, a bunch of proliferate, and a little bouncing : )
Urtet, Remanant of Memnarch! The Myr-mander king!
Venser, corpse puppet is an exciting and upsetting card that I'm already building
Hey Prof, given the grand architect and hero of bladehold lore, what about a video of named creatures that were represented by non legendary cards in the past?
This would be so cool! Also special mentions like the Ogre rebel who learned the word for home
So it took me awhile to realize this but how Ria works with double strike is that only first strike damage is prevented so double strikers aren't a good fit with her if the goal is to try to create a large number of mites as quickly as possible
I'm so excited to play with skrelv as my commander. Full of tiny double strikers gaining toxic 1, untapping skrelv and proliferating a lot
I made this, having so much fun, don't have much cards proliferating though but I always have tons of mites. Used the white dominus to double mite tokens.
Ovika is being slept on. I'm sure she'll be a blast to play, with convoke X spells and the like.
