  • With a busted left hand + right shoulder, I really wanted to dye my favorite robe. The robe is very plush, cozy, thick and soft but 100% white polyester & at least 5 yrs old. I'm clumsy so was constantly washing it even tho it was clean. I was just getting turmeric or cinnamon on it. I needed something that wouldn't look dirty so easily. It was also turning a bit gray with age. BUT - I wasn't going to be able to follow the directions. So this is what happened. It turned out an absolutely gorgeous unexpected DUSTY ROSE color. Sadly, my video card doesn't work so I couldn't share the final, vibrant color result with you. But thought you'd want to know how to do a large garment without using boiling water. Be aware this is a super absorbent fabric even tho it's synthetic, so it really soaked up the color easily.

Might try this I plan on dyeing multiple items red but I have no pots big enough for that but plenty of plastic storage container lying around. Hopefully it works out.

@jolieblondeLA so I'm not sure if it would work...but if you wanted to try to get it the bright pink the bottle shows you could maybe try the spray bottle method? Ofcourse you'd have to have a place to lay it flat or just spray a little by little flipping it over in a type tub like you used in this video. But alot of ppl will do this method for carpets and rugs.etc. it's alot more concentrated since it's not diluted in SO much water. But I heard that Dylon dye also doesn't have to have hot water at all...can use cold water for the complete dying process! Apparently their dyes are much more pigmented! But thanks for sharing this!!

    Thanks for video.
I did this method for cream coloured polyester burlap, used almost boiling water (laundry tub) and used a bucket. Rit dye more dye bottles. Graphite worked perfectly following directions, and frost grey worked with two bottles (doubling dye)

Do you have pics you could share!? Would love to see the grey!! So did you dye 2 different items with the greys? Or just 1 item was dyed grey?
      Thanks!!

I have a mostly polymer dress that I want to tie dye for homecoming this week, The dress doesnt exactly fit in any pots i can put on the stove, so this would work for me so much better. I appreciate this🙏

Sorry for the terribly late reply. No I haven't lost the color in washing 🌹 Yay!

I watched a couple of videos sponsored by the Rit Dye people and they suggest also soaking the item in a fixative solution. Maybe artificial fabrics have a harder time holding dye? Or maybe it was just a gimmick to get us to buy another product 😂

I've seen tests on the fixative and it seems to truly lock in the dye. It's like the stuff you use after dying your hair to seal the cuticle.

Too bad I’m subscribing anyway, I’m about to dye something with rit dye, but can’t use boiling water. Thank you for the tips
