I kept telling people that Genghis was a mount and blade protagonist but no one believes me.
He :
1. Started weak and easily pushed around by just about anyone, even butchering his first big battle.
2. Joined powerful kingdom as mercenary, then became vassal with his private army, gaining prestige, power, relationship with nobles and knowledge of the kingdom.
3. Found some excuse to break off and invade his former kingdom, while getting nobles with high relationship to defect and join his new empire.
4. Conquered much of the world before he died with his sons continuing his legacy

Speaking of Genghis Khan, there is a 1956 movie about him named "The Conqueror", in which the mongol Lord of War is played by no other than John Wayne (no wonder why that movie is considered one of the worst ever made). In fact, that film caused the death by cancer of 46 members of the staff, as it was filmed in zones actively used for nuclear tests

The life and career of Genghis is so remarkable that it almost defies belief. If his story was written as fiction, it would have been dismissed as an outrageous fantasy. Considering his humble beginnings and the torturous difficulties that he had to endure and slowly build his base, his achievements are greater than those of Alexander and Caesar. Alexander and Caesar were born into privilege and within very established powers; Genghis was left out in the wilderness as a child with his family to die after his father was murdered. He had to learn to just survive. He had no education and no tutors. He had to learn on his own over many years of struggle and even failures. To me, this is more impressive. He endured a level of hardship over a long period that most people can't even imagine.
I’m sure Temujin was finding the pieces to the Dragon Banner and gathering ducats to establish his own empire.
The Jin character used in the video is the wrong one. 晋 is the name of an earlier ethnic-Chinese dynasty (the successor to the Three Kingdoms), whilst 金 is the Jurchen kingdom in Northern China you were referring to in the video. The former is pronounced in the 4th tone and the latter 1st.
金 Jin (literally "gold") is so named because the Jurchens vanquished the Khitan 辽 (the name of an iron alloy) dynasty in its early days. Many of the former Khitan Liao nobility later detected to Genghis in his invasion of Jin.

Temujin went from a captive minor warlord to a conqueror of his former Jin tormentors sounds as impossible as Vlad Dracula conquering the Ottoman Empire. Yet Temujin did it. What a man.

Vlad was from the house of Basarab and it is of Cuman origin wich were a Tukic nomadic people that sought asylum in the kingdom of Hungary after the Mongol invasion in 1237. Cumans played an important role in the Latin empire, Byzantine empire and the Nicaea enpire.
Many eventually settled west of the Black Sea, influencing the politics of Kievan Rus', the Galicia-Volhynia Principality, the Golden Horde Khanate, the Second Bulgarian Empire, the Kingdom of Serbia, the Kingdom of Hungary, Moldavia, the Kingdom of Georgia, the Byzantine Empire, the Empire of Nicaea, the Latin Empire and Wallachia, with Cuman immigrants becoming integrated into each country's elite.

I somehow missed how the experience of the Mongols with China was similar to barbarian tribes in Europe sitting next to Rome; they were tolerated, placated, used, moved around, and then pounced when the great empire was flagging and took it all down. Awesome vid!

Temujin proceeded cautiously on his approach to the Naiman territory. He knew the Naimans would outnumber him when the time came to give battle. Their warriors had a fierce reputation, their commanders known for their tendency to take the offensive and press the attack. But Temujin also knew that the Naiman king, Baibuka Tayang, was not a good general. Long before the present war he had taken the measure of the man and concluded that, "the Naiman are strong in numbers, but their khan is a weak man who has never been out of his tent."25 When in command of a strong army, even a weak general can be dangerous, however, for as an old proverb had it, an army of lions led by a donkey was more dangerous than an army of donkeys led by a lion!

Think both the mercenary and captive angle make sense. In fact, I think it's likely that Temujin initially offered up his services to the Jin before being taken captive, but more as a hostage along with his family, at least for a time. It would certainly add an extra layer of perceived justification for conquering them later on. More wood on the fire, as it were.
Amount of research had to be done in these videos are incredible. I learned more about my country's history from this channel than school and university. The history we thought was narrow and one sided. Showing all the great things about the Khan instead of going into deep analysis of the events. Mongolians perceive Khan as a absolute flawless commandor but rest of the world used to think he was a mindless barbarian. These videos are really useful for giving balanced ideas about him or any other historical figures. He was neither mindless murderious barbarian nor flawless godlike being.

As a Mongolian I agree that Mongolians would taboo if our great khan went to Jin to seek a refugee. It seems very likely. Kudos to K&G on sheer research made on the topic

Great job as usual! I was wondering if there is interest to cover the further legacy of Mongols beyond the Golden Horde you covered in a video about how they lost control of Russia, like the White Horde, and then Uzbek and Kazakh khanates. Recently Putin and his supporters purported claims like Kazakhstan never had a statehood, just like they pushed similar claims for Ukraine before invading. Kazakh khanate was large and one of the successors of the Mongol empire and existed for several centuries before the Russian empire absorbed it in the 19th century. It was always fascinating for me how we look alike with Mongols and how similar was our way of nomadic life, but how different we were in terms of languages and culture, as well as religion. They obviously assimilated into the local way of Turkic life, just like they did in China, but I would have expected more cultural similarities.
Yeah, we have to make more videos on Central Asia... It is a blindspot for the Western viewer right now, and that region will be becoming more and more important.

Established Titles does not give you Real Titles at all, you don't get anything at all, the Laird title is limited to ONE per property and cannot be divided like that, more importantly, your "souvenir plots" can't be registered due to a prohibition as per Land Registration (Scotland) Act 2012, s 50 (2).

@Kings and Generals it would be nice if you could make a video about the Hazaras of Afghanistan. They have subtribes named after Mongolian and Turkic tribes. For example Besudi, Naiman, Dai Khitai, Turkman, Qaralugh, Qarabaghi, Tatar etc.
The Para-Mongolic Khitans are still existing but none of them know Khitan language 😮

Love learning about this hidden history of Genghis. However, may I point out that the Jin Dynasty of the 1100's is written as 金 ，and NOT 晉 which is a 3rd CE dynasty with the same Anglicized pronunciation
Many talk about the atrocities that Khan committed, but few mention that he "personally" repopulated the populations that were under his rule. If that's not dedication to recovering the country, then I don't know what is.

The Jin engineering their own destruction by sheltering Temujin would certainly fit the pattern of most of human history.
More notably, trying to ambush him when he came to pay tribute. It's ridiculous how many rulers tried to backstab him, only to doom their own empires. Hindsight is 20-20 and all, but man was crossing Genghis Khan a bad idea.

You'd think that when he became king of the world he'd write his OWN history, something that fills in all the gaps.
Though the Mongols very famously didn't write their own records, they got other people to do it for them so maybe it just didn't occur to them.
He did have his own history written in his lifetime. If you look closely at the Yasa as it has been passed down, some parts of it still has the reasons behind certain laws that are taken from his own life experiences. The most famous of these is the one about all parts of any animal being OK to eat because during a campaign his army ran out of food and they found the innards of an unidentified animal, cooked, and ate them. The original Yasa was full of little stories like this and it was probably arranged according to the sequence of those stories instead of any logical organization of the laws. Later on, Mongol chronicles decided to reorganize the Yasa to make it more rational as a law book and got rid of first the sequence, then the stories themselves.

I'm actually curious now. GK was always a big fan of SEVERE retribution (see Khwarazmian Empire, or resultant lack thereof), so I have to wonder what could have been if the Jin didn't break faith. In this narrative, tribute was still being paid and stopped only after Jin turned on him. He had to know that he was going to be replaced as favored barbarian border vassal. So he had no choice but to move against them. But what if they kept talking his tribute? Dynastic squabbles were commonplace, so maybe ou boy Temujin might have just backed one of his homies play for emperor. Or even become a hired warlord against the Song. It really seems like punking Ghengis Khan out was one of histories greatest mistakes. As to nesting such a serpent to their breast, well they did that a whole bunch and no e of those guys blew up like that. There might be a connection here between dynastic and governmental upheavals and poorly thought out and executed betrayals, as this isn't the only example of this by any means. Perhaps I'm wrong though and unexpected power shifts are the mere product of deity and destiny.

Great video, but just a side note: at 10:30, the video uses 晉 as the character for the Jin dynasty that Genghis Khan overthrew, but the correct character is actualy 金. 晉 is actually the name of an earlier Jin dynasty that succeeded the Three Kingdoms period in the 3rd century CE.

The Jin Dynasty of 1115-1234AD is 金, not 晉
晉 is the Jin Dynasty of 266-420AD, or the "Later Jin" Dynasty of 936-947AD
Actually, in Mandarin, 晉 is pronounced jìn, while 金 is Pennines pronounced jīn. And in Cantonese they're completely different.

You know actually this reminded me a bit of King David working for the Philistines, he works for them as a mercenary and when King Saul was killed they installed him as king and backed him in his word succession against two Saul's sons! one mistake in video：the character of Jin Dynasty is not "晋" but "金". the 晋 was another chinese dynasty established in 3rd centry which was 900 years before temujin's time. While 金 dynasty was founded in around 1115 BC by jurchen people (女真) and then conquored north China. character 金 means "gold" in chinese. both 晋 and 金 are pronounced as almost same as "Jin", but in different tones, 晋 is 4th tone, 金 is 1st tone. anyway they are 2 different historic concepts. exvept this minor mistake, this video is great!

I’m trying to get the simplified story of genghis khans life while high and no matter how hard I tried to focus on this video, I just couldn’t focus on it.
It would be great if you could consult a native Mongolian speaker about the pronunciations of certain names.

You have written the character for Jin wrong. 金 is the correct character, not 晋 which is the dynasty following the 3 kingdoms period around 900 years earlier.

I love the fact theres a text from 1252 called the secret history of the mongols. Same as todays clickbait articles.
It wasn't the original name for it! (That is now lost) but it was a chronicle written just for the Imperial family, hence why it was a "secret history," not intended for public access.

It's weird to think the only good movie about Genghis Khan is the Russian movie Mongol. Was going to get the Hollywood treatment but got scrapped since people finally realized casting Mickey Rourke in the role was racist, and they decided that oh no, without Mickey Rourke, we can't possibly have a Genghis Khan movie. Would really like to see one. Marco Polo on Netflix was okay, but took place after he already had the empire, which is less interesting to me. Also, it had too much fucking Marco Polo in it.
