  • This epic year of 3.75" o-ring G.I. Joe ARAH has some of the biggest playsets ever - the Defiant Space Shuttle Complex AND the Mobile Command Center. And that's not even counting some other great vehicles like the MAMBA helicopter.
This year also introduced us to Lt. Falcon, the armored v3 Cobra Commander that also stood in as the Fred VII Crimson Guard, and Cobra-La
Sgt. Slaughter got his Renegades as well, and we had the underwhelming Battle Force 2000. We also got Rocky's counterpart in Big Boa and a Dress Marine version of Gung Ho. Also... COULD the Sarge make an appearance this year? Watch and find out!

In 1987 I was 15, I was at that spot, working, getting more into rock, a typical teenager. I was still holding on to the line a little, with my little brother. The over the top characters were not exciting for me. I had a few figs from then, but about where I was kind of out. Even though we have many of these. It was my last year as a real kid collecting them. All of the last of our friends also moved on, so no more building wars in the wild with the other nerdy neighborhood kids 😢
82 to 86 was my era for ARAH, and it was very fun. We abused those characters and they took it. 🎉 except some crotches, thumbs and paint lol.

This was probably the last year I collected joe products. I was a sophomore in high school and girl's/car's suddenly began to appeal to me! However, my little brother was still really into it so I kept on for little bro for a bit longer.
As for the toy line, we managed to get most of it. The command center was the only thing we didn't get. It was a toss up at Christmas between the
MCC or the Defiant for my little brother. Mom let me pick so there was really no debate about which it would be. I still have the picture of him and the look on his face when he first walked into the room and saw that Defiant sitting there! Classic 😂!!!

This was the first year I was all in on figures --we had all of these -- with most of them being mine rather than my brother's. We didn't have any of these vehicles -- but since it was all in, I was busy picking up previous year vehicles. Nor did we get any of the playsets -- we'd gotten the Flagg the previous year and I'm pretty sure my mom was concerned about lack of space.

Sounds like good memories. The Flagg is a good reason to be out of space 😎

All I want is a complete Defiant Shuttle brought to life in a proper live action G.I. Joe as a series with all the nostalgia not like all other live action Joe films that was not GI Joe that I knew and grew up with. I rather want a live action G.I. Joe that is a G.I. Joe I know and only way to have it is a storyline set in the 1980s to 1990s for the old school Joe fans and new Joe fans must understand that is the original G.I. Joe we all knew and loved.

The figures for this year were rather lackluster as you mentioned some Joe sculpts were based off Hasbro employees which explains why Law has a chubbiness to him based on Kirk Bozigian and Stephen King's own son Owen King who was a Joe fan had his name used on Sneak Peek. I think 1987 was really when the line was going gonzo with the huge shuttle playset and the weird-o Cobra La team that turned many fans away for awhile, the line was expanding too much that it was hard to keep track of them.

Hasbro definitely started to lose direction with this line in 1987, there was a pretty clear drop-off in the overall quality from the 1983-86 period. I didn't like the move into space and I thought that Battle Force 2000 and Cobra-La really sucked. But I've got a soft spot for this year; I remember my dad taking us to a toy store in a neighbouring town and us seeing GI Joes for the first time. I got Falcon, my brother got Crazy Legs. Almost 40 years later and my enthusiasm hasn't dimmed. Yo Joe!!

The “outrage” over Optimus Prime dying in the Transformers movie is vastly overrated.

Funny thing is he died a 2nd time in the Japanese 1987 series, a few eps after being brought back to life, lol.
