The Austroasiatic languages or Mon-Khmer are a large language family in Mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia. These languages are scattered throughout parts of Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and southern China and are the majority languages of Vietnam and Cambodia. There are around 117 million speakers of Austroasiatic languages. Of these languages, only Vietnamese, Khmer, and Mon have a long-established recorded history. Only two have official status as modern national languages: Vietnamese in Vietnam and Khmer in Cambodia. The Mon language is a recognized indigenous language in Myanmar and Thailand. In Myanmar, the Wa language is the de facto official language of Wa State. Santali is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. The rest of the languages are spoken by minority groups and have no official status.
Ethnologue identifies 168 Austroasiatic languages. These form thirteen established families (plus perhaps Shompen, which is poorly attested, as a fourteenth), which have traditionally been grouped into two, as Mon-Khmer, and Munda. However, one recent classification posits three groups (Munda, Mon-Khmer, and Khasi-Khmuic), while another has abandoned Mon-Khmer as a taxon altogether, making it synonymous with the larger family.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
    Submit your recordings to otipeps24@gmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

It is worth noted that Khmer hasn’t always used 5+(numeral) for numbers from 6 to 9.
Several older forms were reconstructed as such:
    6 - kroong
    7 - knuul
    8 - ktii
    9 - ksaar
10 - kraaj (dap comes from Old Chinese diep, kraaj is related to nowaday word for 100 roy)
Thank you Andy for your beautiful work 🇰🇭

I must say that this is the most unique language family as compared to the rest of the language families around the world given that many of its languages are being heavily influenced by other non-Austroasiatic languages in terms of vocabulary, tones, etc. For instance, the Vietnamese language is heavily influenced by Southern Chinese language, particularly Cantonese. The same can be said for Santhali, where it's being heavily influenced by Hindi & Bengali & as for Khmer, it's being heavily influenced by Sanskrit. Oh yes, & not to mention the Semai language of Malaysia, where it's being heavily influenced by the Malay language as well.

Austroasiatic is one of the oldest Asian language families spoken by extremely different ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, South Asia and southern China.
Aslian and Nicobarese are two interesting branches which are spoken by the Negritos, the indegenous tribes in the Malay peninsula and Nicobarese islands, e.g. Semang, Maniq, Shompen. They are classified as ‘Southern Mon-Khmer’ group together with ‘Monic branch’ (e.g. Mon) which is spoken by non-Negritos.
This is interesting because Austroasiatic languages are originated in southern China and northern SEA mainland but spread to the Negritos, the oldest inhabitants of SEA. Same situation as the Negritos in the Philippines (e.g. Ati) and Oceania (e.g. Melanesians) which speak Austronesian languages, unlike the indegenous tribes in Papua and Australia which have their own diverse language families.
