The Austroasiatic languages or Mon-Khmer are a large language family in Mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia. These languages are scattered throughout parts of Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and southern China and are the majority languages of Vietnam and Cambodia. There are around 117 million speakers of Austroasiatic languages. Of these languages, only Vietnamese, Khmer, and Mon have a long-established recorded history. Only two have official status as modern national languages: Vietnamese in Vietnam and Khmer in Cambodia. The Mon language is a recognized indigenous language in Myanmar and Thailand. In Myanmar, the Wa language is the de facto official language of Wa State. Santali is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. The rest of the languages are spoken by minority groups and have no official status.
Ethnologue identifies 168 Austroasiatic languages. These form thirteen established families (plus perhaps Shompen, which is poorly attested, as a fourteenth), which have traditionally been grouped into two, as Mon-Khmer, and Munda. However, one recent classification posits three groups (Munda, Mon-Khmer, and Khasi-Khmuic), while another has abandoned Mon-Khmer as a taxon altogether, making it synonymous with the larger family.
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
It is worth noted that Khmer hasn’t always used 5+(numeral) for numbers from 6 to 9.
Several older forms were reconstructed as such:
6 - kroong
7 - knuul
8 - ktii
9 - ksaar
10 - kraaj (dap comes from Old Chinese diep, kraaj is related to nowaday word for 100 roy)
Thank you Andy for your beautiful work 🇰🇭
Thanks for this. I was wondering why Khmer was the only one with this system.
Why did they switch to a base of 5? Isn't it easier if 6-9 have their own words like most languages?

Is that Thai?
@@Garfield_Minecraft it actually comes from Cantonese but through Thai
@@JcDizon I have no idea. The forms I have written are actually reconstructions, so khmer might have been using the base-5 for a very long time
Informative as always.
I must say that this is the most unique language family as compared to the rest of the language families around the world given that many of its languages are being heavily influenced by other non-Austroasiatic languages in terms of vocabulary, tones, etc. For instance, the Vietnamese language is heavily influenced by Southern Chinese language, particularly Cantonese. The same can be said for Santhali, where it's being heavily influenced by Hindi & Bengali & as for Khmer, it's being heavily influenced by Sanskrit. Oh yes, & not to mention the Semai language of Malaysia, where it's being heavily influenced by the Malay language as well.
Heavily influenced by Middle Chinese, not Cantonese.
Assalamualaikum bib
Vietnamese language is influced by Old and Middle Chinese not Cantonese
What about khasi?
You dont know cantonese born from austroasitic also?
Nice video! 👍 Thanks Andy
That's a splendid video. Love your voice. ❤️
I'm always amazed at how quickly yet masterfully produced your videos are, and I keep coming back to admire how much they pay homage to every culture that you present! Mabuhay, from one kababayan to another! I hope you continue being inspired to create these videos, much love from a fellow Filipino ❣

Even the number doesnt sound all similar from 1-10 each has their own unique way of saying it and some of them even have Sino tibetan influence in it just to prove how old is Austroasiatic family and how heavily it got affected hard by the neighbors

Austroasiatic is one of the oldest Asian language families spoken by extremely different ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, South Asia and southern China.
Aslian and Nicobarese are two interesting branches which are spoken by the Negritos, the indegenous tribes in the Malay peninsula and Nicobarese islands, e.g. Semang, Maniq, Shompen. They are classified as ‘Southern Mon-Khmer’ group together with ‘Monic branch’ (e.g. Mon) which is spoken by non-Negritos.
This is interesting because Austroasiatic languages are originated in southern China and northern SEA mainland but spread to the Negritos, the oldest inhabitants of SEA. Same situation as the Negritos in the Philippines (e.g. Ati) and Oceania (e.g. Melanesians) which speak Austronesian languages, unlike the indegenous tribes in Papua and Australia which have their own diverse language families.
Aslian also spoke by non semang people like senoi and proto malay (semelai).semang speak jahaic (northern aslian), Senoi speak senoic (central aslian) and semelaic (southern aslian) .Semelai people who under proto malay group that speak southern aslian also while other proto malay speak austronesia language.
Austroasiatic might have covered the entire mainland Southeast Asia at one point and may have even extended to parts of western Indonesia before it got displaced by Austronesian, Kra-Dai and Tibeto-Burman
Where did Austroasiatic originate in Southern China?
Austroasiatic origin from semang the oldest habitant in south east asia. These people move up to mainland and populate those area based on latest genetics.
Nikobarese Shompen near Aceh Sumatra Indonesia they're look like Vietnamese
I am Munda tribe from India , my mother tongue is Munda language .
All these started from one tribe and in that tribe existed adventurous explorers and now their forgotten ancient language spread out and branched into various new ones
Number 7 to 9 for MAN MET and 6 to 10 for BUMANG sound so same with Thai. So amazing. Anyone knows why?

Hello My Austroastic people .
I am Monic...
love Mon khmer family and Munda family❤
How did austroasiatic reach nicobar islands?
Maybe through the Malay peninsula or Sumatra island .well austroasiatic people use to live in Sumatra but they don't survive and get fully assimilation to austronesia people.
@@myself5812 maybe because nicobar island see close to Sumatra island.
and you also smart
Georgia pls
Semai doesn't have numbers past 3?
Number 4 until 10 ,they borrow from Malay numeral .Many Aslian language borrow number 4-10 from Malay language but language like semelai, temoq and semaq beri have more aslian numeral.
Semelai numeral :
1= muy
2=duwaʔ
3=hmpɛʔ
4=hmpon
5=məsɔŋ
6=pruʔ
7=tud͡ʒuh / tmpɔh
8=lapan / kitwit
9=smilan /kantim
10=səpuluh /kumai
Temoq numeral :
1=mũy
2=dua
3=m̥mɛʔ
4=m̥m̩pʊn
5=mɨsoɡŋ
6=pɾuʔ
7=tampoɔh
Semaq beri numeral :
1=muy
2=hmar
3=hmpɛʔ
4=hmpon
5=msɔŋ
They simply use Malay-based numbers when referring to number 4 & beyond, though with a slight different pronunciation to suit their native communication.
