Squeezing an egg in the palm is the original anti prank. You can squeeze as hard as you want and it won't break because of the uniform pressure. When others are presented this, they won't believe it and refuse to try in assumption that the egg isn't being squeezed and that it will break when given for them to try. I love that she pranked herself with the trick. Also that she was kind enough to not smash it on your forehead.

The better question is why Caretaker couldn't break it until she threw it in the hat
It’s because of the hole in the hat. It slowed down drag which lessened the kinetic force. Because of the slowing of the kinetic force, the re-action of hitting the floor didn’t push back that hard on the hat, meaning that the egg wasn’t crushed. Also, another factor to why the egg didn’t break was the fabric of the hat. The hat was soft and kind of flexible, which means that it helped with the contact of hitting the floor. The fabric made it so that the soft-like hat basically made a tiny bounce off the floor. When a soft object hits a hard floor, neither of the two gets damaged a lot because the soft object is unable to keep enough kinetic energy to cause damage. The fluffy hairs around the hat causes drag which also slowly slows down the hat.
TL;DR
The soft hat acted like a parachute, and the soft hat made the impact less dangerous. Basically a sponge bouncing off concrete
@@alcorthewise3512 it’s because the hat was on a hard floor. When a soft object has a low width and is directly above a hard object, the egg hits the soft object, but due to the width or how flexible it is, it goes right through the hat into the hard floor, which results in the breaking of the egg.

At school they dropped it off the gym. I think it was 30 feet. You could only use straws and string. I cheated and used a soldering iron to melt the straws together. I just made a huge cage around it making sure none of the straws pointed directly into the egg. I looked horrible and the the melted parts actually got brittle. When it was dropped it literally exploded apart and the egg rolled out un harmed. The teacher was actually impressed.

I remember when I did an egg drop competition as a kid where the only requirements were to use the materials the adults gave us and the goal was get the egg safely from point a to b. No other rules. I suppose the people running the competition thought nobody would do anything too crazy or something but the lack of rules totally backfired. My method: got a bunch of tape and a cup and just lowered the egg to the ground. Won the competition because my egg was the only one that didn’t crack and as a bonus I get to say that now it has to be explicitly stated that the device has to actually be dropped and cannot be gently lowered. Gotta love vague instructions :)
After binge watching several episodes I just want to say that Caretaker has (even with a shiner) the most amazing skin. And after Will's "I quit" video I have the urge to post this. Please don't listen to the trolls, you are absolutely beautiful.
The fact that a carefully constructed, cat food filled landing cushion did not work but two unsecured hats did is mind-boggling.
I'm surprised they didn't come apart. That or them tipping was the potential flaw in that design. Otherwise it's quite clever.
The hats had a more efficient energy reduction mechanism, that being the air resistance caused by the large cavity which also in a stroke of genius elevated the egg-contact surface above the ground and dissipated the collision impact around the rim. The real god damn luck in this as William suggested is the hats not flipping mid-air, I imagine on a windier day this advantage would have been moot.

I get that the height of the egg meant less absorption of impact and the hats acted a little bit like a parachute, but I'm mostly shocked they didn't come apart while falling. I guess the material had a lot of friction? Nice science words, though. I definitely could not have explained it that well XD
@@alicered4198 I think they probably had that roughish cheap material texture so yeah I imagine that had enough friction to glue them together. Although now that I say glue I just realised that big Willy was by all means allowed to use the glue gun they had.

I expected it to go just the way it did. He's really smart and understands what needs to happen to protect the egg. I wouldn't have thought of using two hats but the second he said what his plan was I knew he was gonna win.
It was like beginner's luck, except it came from experience.
I REALLY like how happy she seems in this video. Because of the running joke that she is always disapproving of William (specifically his videos), and especially when she is actually really disapproving, it always looks like she feed up with him. I've known that that wasn't the case, but this video really puts my mind at ease that is is (mostly) just a facade that she's completely disapproving of his videos.

Counteract force of gravity with a drag force which is increased with a larger surface are provided by the hats. The shape of the hat also affects the drag coefficient here too. The hats are light weight which helps too and flex from impact.
