The Short Line Local | SRY Rail Link ~ Vlog # 129

- A close up view of a prototype Short Line Railroad servicing a local industry. In this case, a rare EMD SD-35, coupled to an SD-38-2, pulls and drops a plastic pellet load at IPEX Plastics In Langley, B.C. Canada. This is one reason why I model SRY Rail Link as the subject for the River Road HO Scale Shelf Layout.

I believe these two units are SD38-2, part of 4 sd38-2 the BCHydro Ry. Originally ordered.
No. I grew up around them and have loads of photos from Trapp Yard, etc. This unit is an SD-35 # 385 (Turbo Charged with Dynamic Brakes). SRY brought it up from Montana Rail Link (same owner - Dennis Washington). There were four original SD units in the SD-38 Class for BC Hydro Rail. One was an SD-38AC # 381 (non-Turbo Charged), and the remaining three (382,383,384) were SD-38-2's. Cheers 😁
Great video! I've never heard of an SD-35 until now. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Very nice, thank you. It's great to have someone that understands video and how slow to pan without making the image upsetting...
Glad you enjoyed it!
I absolutely loved the focus on the fuel tank of the SD 35, and it's weathering !
Same here!
I worked at a Hercules Polypropylene Film plant for about 9 years, just north of Terre Haute, Indiana, back in the 1980's. The L&N (formerly C&EI) switched the plant regularly. Although I left my office to visit our sidings now and then, I think we must have been serviced outside regular working hours as I never saw us being switched! The unloading area was very clean and tidy, many of the hoppers had our company name on them, and they had absolutely no graffiti. Imagine that. I very much enjoyed this video. In particular it's nice to see that my fiddling with coupler alignment while switching is prototypical. 🙂 Cheers from Wisconsin!
Yes! The coupler tweak was interesting eh? Cheers.
I like how you include the still shots in your video, lots of details to be seen. I can see how it can take a long time to edit and compose what you produce. Thanks for sharing with us.👍
Thank you very much!
Once again, thanks for posting it sure is appreciated to be trackside with you. I need to see up close footage to remind me about the sounds and clunks and squealing. As modelers, we tend to forget about the dynamics of moving freight. The size, the weight, and the inertia..... so fortunate to have this show right in town....all the best, Perry
There is so much more to railroading than just mainline "foaming." As you can see I am more interested in the "Last" mile railroading and local operations.😁
Great video Boomer showing us how you do your prototypical layout work on. Thanks for the share. Keep up the excellent work you do. Hope your hand has recovered. Thanks again 🇨🇦🚂🥓TSM
Thank you!
if someone had said to me 50 years ago..........or a day ago, I'd watch a 9 minute video of car switching, I'd say, "YOU'RE CRAZY!!" But here I am. Thanks for keeping your channel always interesting. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you . . . lol. Cheers.
Great show last night
Yes it was alot of fun. My Wi-Fi tanked after I switch to an emergency computer. Hope to have that fixed for the next one.
@@boomerdiorama I’ve been without power after Ian and CZcams has been all I’ve had to watch so it was really nice to come home last night and listen to you guys. Also been working on your painting technique on a gp9 and a few GP40s but couldn’t finish them with out electricity. But they’re looking really good. Hope to get them done this week and post some videos.
Really good seeing the prototype makes it easier to relate to your layout. Good to watch you on second section really enjoyed the show
Thank you Paul! Cheers. 😁
Great video! 👏 Man I love trains. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
😁😁👍
Real nice work, man🌠 - Take care - Bill.
Thanks Bill! Cheers.😁
Great rail fanning video! I model 1957 my birth year, I love steam and gp7s! I love you videos, the moose one blew me away! Now I have to rethink everything! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you very much! Have fun!
I ran the Valley Job on October 8th with that exact set of units, first train I ever got to be on as a conductor! I was 19
Awesome! I drive by that local all the time just in case I might see something. Wish I knew the time table. Cheers.
Always a visceral experience up close, no matter the type of move!!!
I was all over the place on that one. I have rehearsed that location a few times just in case. ;-)
Funny thing model railroads: watching this switching maneuver is great, things happening, immersive etc. And probably there watching for quite some time.
And yet... and yet... could you imagine trying to attempt a switching layout? With one turnout? With one industry? And being entertained for the same length of time as watching the prototype?
Funny thing model railroads...
Great vid by the way, enjoyed it a lot :)
Thank you! Cheers.
Great video!
Thanks!
That is an operating session all by itself. There is that derail. You have brought me back to the days of military modeling. When modeling was art. I am building a shelf railroad now and watching your channel is making a great positive impact on me and my work. I am modeling 1915 to 1918 in Southeast New York State. A fictitious railroad based on a few prototype railroads. It's called the Piermont Western.
Wow! New York 1915! That should be a really cool period piece.
I generally do not watch train video because the production and editing efforts at times is quite lacking. Boomer, you score again. Excellent video, the titles said more then enough and the details seen should give us all great ideas to model.
I also watched the Second Section podcast live and everyone could tell they were in awe, especially Andy with his grin. Lots of good stuff came out of that podcast including the fact you definitely were having a good time
Thanks for sharing
Thank you Tom. I was lucky to get that video. I was on my way home and I cut down Duncan Way just in case and caught them live. ;-) The intention of the video was two fold - to acquire reference material for IPEX Steel Local and to encourage other modelers as well. Cheers ~ Boomer.😁
good video to watch for the operational side of things. Thanks for taking the time to show us all
You are welcome Sparky! Cheers ~ Boomer.
I'll switch with a double set of those any day. They'll go till they blow up LOL.
Nice units for sure!
I love that SD35!!! Also there is a tremendous amount of detail at that ipex facility...thats very cool! I should go to bed...lol!!!
You should! . . . lol. Cheers Andy.
a lot of details around that pellet industry, can't wait to see how you go about the modeling of them and also the building would interesting to see too, would you model it flat against the backdrop or model the angel of the building like the prototype? And also are you going to squeeze in the drygood industry too? that'll make for a nice final industry for section 3 but we'll have to wait and see where you go with it..👍
I would model a portion with the angle like the prototype.
That's quite the switching operation to build from Thanks for sharing
You bet!
Interesting seeing the prototype and how it’s operated…thought SD35’s had become extinct
Me too. Nice to see this one in such nice condition in 2022!
From modeling to railfanning, you do it all man. Love the way you could get up close and personal with the action without too much zooming. Cant wait to see your interpretation when modelling act 2 (section 2) of your layout. Thanks for sharing and it's always a pleasure following your channel.
Thank you very much!
Boomer, thanks for the close-up detail of the bottom end of the loco. There is definitely some weathering inspiration there!
Sure thing Ralph. How could you tell I was thinking that . . . lol. The SD-35 is a handsome locomotive.! Cheers Ralph ~ Boomer.
So to fully understand the operation:
-Train arrives pushing the loaded hoppers and drops them off just past the plastics spur.
-Train pulls the empties out from plastics spur and grabs the centerbeam
-Train keeps the empties and backs back into the loaded cars it dropped off on the siding.
-Train pushes the loaded cars into the plastics siding.
-Train drives off with the empties and drops them off at some yard somewhere nearby?
Yes indeed. The empties go back to Trapp Yard in New Westminster 50 miles away for re-classification. Then they interchange with BNSF or CN . . . wash-rinse-repeat. Cheers.
That's pretty cool. Love the SD35.
Me too!
Yes I’d like industrial railroading strong pups the engines.
Cheers!
nice vid... good switching
Thanks!
Very interesting. A foreshadow of what is to come on River Road?
Yes indeed!
awesome podcast Boomer
Thank you. My main comp broke down though. Video was poor . . . oh well.
@@boomerdiorama It did not detract from the content - over 3 hours went so quickly. Hope you can do it again. Also, the Second Section channel is so cool. I am looking forward to watching more of their podcasts.
@@PeterTillman3 Love those guys over there. I look forward to every show @ czcams.com/users/SecondSectionPodcast 😁
Fun switching video to watch!
The rail looks really light, do you know what weight or size it is?
Code 55-70 . . . lol. ;-)
it's a "one turnout layout" just there
Yes!
😊
Cheers Randy!
Why 385 though? Given SRY numbering pattern, it really should be 350 or 351.
Good question. Seems logical though, since the SD-35 (X-Montana Rail Link) falls into into the original six-axle main road power category (SD-38's) which are original from the former BC Hydro Rail. ;-)
Thanks for this interesting, and "potential" video. I can see what is coming for Module "B" to "C". Also lot of good sound tracks. How is your finger?
Great! Thank you.
@@boomerdiorama Good to hear, my hand still vibrates with sympathy. Thanks, I will be reviewing this one and I like the derail. It looks easier to build. Cheers !!
Any pics of the hoppers connected for unloading? I am confused as to how its done
I showed the hoses Charlie? They hook up the hose to the car and it sucks out the pellets.
@@boomerdiorama Hoses hooked to the hoppers
Would great to show the trainmen you youtube channel
;-)
Were you up a little late last night Boomer?
Yes. I slept in today which is rare. ;-)
Boomer is this the over pass on your layout?
Yes it is. This is the inspiration for the signature scene on section two just past the overpass.
