    Thanks to you I took my family to Frasers beach today. Only had squid which was a waste of time and my sinkers were too light. A magnificent spot. We didn't catch anything but the guy down a bit from me was hauling in some dame good fish. One every 10-15 minutes. Getting the right bait and sinkers for next time, Thank you for this recommendation. Will keep you updated. Cheers.

      That is awesome! Cheers for the feedback and so nice to hear that you enjoyed the beach with your fam. It's a great spot, eh. Crabs or prawns are a better bait to use there. Looking forward to hearing how you get on the next time.

      @Fishingreminder  Před rokem +1

      @@dustinfrost5214 Hey Dustin, you get red cod mostly in winter. Blue Moki should be there from beginning of summer until end of autumn. Have you targetted Moki before? You need small hooks and fish very close to structures and/or near sea weed. Suspending hooks under a float, baited with mussels works quite good.

      @Fishingreminder  Před 2 lety

      Haha, yeah the fishing is definitely different down there from Whangarei. It took me quite some time to adjust and to be able to catch something. The fish are there but the same tactics from up North won't work down here. But once you cracked the code, the fishing is amazing in my opinion.

    great informative video mate, we're currently at fortrose and making our way all the way around to Moneky island over the next 2 weeks. My 7 year old boy really wants to collect some Cockles and good spots for him to gather some between fortrose and Monkey Island i can take him to.

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  Před rokem +1

      Hey mate, there are some good big cockles in the Fortrose estuary. If you walk from the freedom campsite towards the mouth at lowtide you'll find some. Other than that we haven't really looked for cockles, but you could probably find some out in Awarua Bay as well. There some nice green lipped mussels out at colac bay near the freedom camp.

      @@fishingoutdoors6542 better luck next time! yeah, it's quite shallow until you get to the channels. I don't think winter is the best time to fish there. For blue cod or gurnard you'd probably have better luck fishing out from Colac Bay on a calm day.

    you see hardly anyone fishing here in southland as the fishing is not very good, if it was good there would be lots of people fishing to catch them, I have fished here a lot for 2 years and catch more than most people do but still not caught any blue cod or trumpeter from the beaches or rocks, they are there but not as great a numbers as the north island for fishing,

    • @Fishingreminder
      @Fishingreminder  Před 2 lety +1

      I actually prefer fishing the Far South. I also fish a lot in the North and it's definitely better up North during winter. But I just love the wild beaches, awesome estuaries and healthy reefs down there. Catching big rig and elephant fish is on par with catching kingfish up North and they are also really good eating. Then there are big gurnards to be caught off the beaches, which I take over a snapper any time. For blue cod, you'd be better off with a kayak or boat. But for shore-based fishing, there are plenty of opportunities to catch tasty sea-run trout, big flounder and Kahawai. Trumpeter and Blue Moki are easier to catch spearfishing, but I actually don't really like the taste of these so much. Nevertheless, it's a spearfishing paradise down there with healthy ecosystems, lots of butterfish, paua, crayfish. The first time I came down there I caught bugger all in the sea and was also more focussed on trout fishing. For sea fishing, you definitely need to change your tactics, baits and approach. What works up North doesn't seem to work so well down there.
