Sawmill Power Feed DIY Woodland Mills HM122

  • I installed a power feed system on my Woodland Mills HM122 Sawmill. This video details each component of the system. The total cost was approximately $325.00 including the battery. I will provide affiliate links to each of the parts below.
    Please keep in mind that this probably makes the machine more dangerous and I do not recommend this be replicated. Also, it has more parts that could fail and put a stop to milling for the day.

    Motor: Pride Jazzy Select Left Side
    If I were to do it again, I would definitely get a motor other than the Jazzy Select due to the mounting configuration. That would require a drive sprocket that may be different than in the previously provided link. I would also consider getting a 1" actuator rather than 1.2 because then my spacing may have been correct on the throttle without cutting a relief in the bracket.

    Refine the installation, write instructions easily understood, and PATENT your idea. You'll be set for life. This would be perfect for aging folks who don't want to pay a grand to the mill company for auto feed. Amazing, sir.

    I like it!! Seems simple and straight forward to operate. Just one feature I would like it to have is to maybe incorporate some sort of clutch on the drive chain. I have had bark or something fall off and jam in between the gantry and the saw bed stopping it. My set up the wheels just spin because it uses gravity like wheels on a car spinning on the road. Saved me from chaos a couple times.

      That's a good suggestion. I think i'll do that with a low amp inline fuse on the motor.

    Great video ! I just bought a HM122 its in route so I hope to be milling in 10 days, just trying to get all the info that I can before I start putting it together :) For me the electrics looks pretty complicated for the few seconds we will save, I'm milling for a little lumber fresh air and exercise :)

      You are in an exciting time.
      The electronics do make the mill unnecessarily complicated. It is more fun for me to automate the mill than to mill lumber at the moment. If the electronics do interest you, stick around because its going to get much more complicated - but it may indeed save more than a few seconds eventually.

      Thanks for stopping by. A mill is definitely a good idea if you have some buildings that need built or if you regularly use rough cut lumber.

      @@nicksnextproject535 I think I’m ordering a 130max. I use a ton of rough cut lumber for projects and we’re getting ready to build a new house so I’ll be able to use a ton of wood off the mill.

      Gotcha. The mills are fun. For milling pine, I am not sure if the investment outweighs buying pine that others mill for you. If its not all about the numbers to you and you have the time, milling pine can be rewarding.

    Great job! Here's the question though, do you think the drive motor has enough balls where you could make an operator area like Mike Fiesta did?

      I think it is running at a lower torque rating due to 12v rather than 24v. I would guess that an extra 200lbs would cause it to struggle. My experience with the auto feed is that I can walk away from under the mill shed and out of all the noise and dust. I dont think id want to ride on the mill. Actually id like to be mowing my lawn while the mill is cutting.

    I was watchimg this and cant you wire the limiting switches to run the mill in a cycle on other words mill gets to end of track activating limiting switch that backs off throttle and activates the lift head it gets to the top and activates another limiting switch which reverses till hitting final switch at beginning of track where you setup the next cut seems like you could wire it all in series and turn it all into one function all tou gotta do is set the height of cut and hit a button

      Yes I think that could be done. With limit switches only it would not allow a lot of flexibility. I am planning on something similar to what you have said but with an added arduino or rasberry pi computer unit to provide multiple options to account for different sized logs and cut preferences.

    Hello Nick,
    I was wondering what hp and or watt the electric motor is. The motor is 12v correct? do you know the gear ratio, rpm of the output shaft and size of the sprocket (teeth) for the drive. Also you mentioned you did not like this motor because of the mounting configuration, what motor would you get?

      I do have the answer to one of your questions and that is 20 teeth on the drive sprocket. This is a jazzy motor so I would defer those other questions to a technical sheet that you may be able to locate online. It is 24v running half power on a 12v battery. I would just get a wheelchair motor with a mounting bracket that looks easy to work with if I was going to do this again. I couldn't recommend anyone else make this modification to their mill as it makes the mill more complicated and dangerous in my opinion.

    quick question but important why did your first speed control fail s it different from the one your now using or did you wire it in correctly and if you did what did you do to cause it to fail that would have been good info to know to save others from making the same mistakes because hey shit happens right.

      I believe it just failed on its own and was not due to wiring. I actually don't remember what went bad on it. I have also had two of the forward and reverse switches go bad on these controllers so i've ordered a separate switch for controlling forward and reverse.

    How are you charging the battery, solar cell are from the engine.

      With a plug-in 110v charger because I have power at the mill house. I should probably switch to a solar panel though.

    Was there a reason you used a 24 volt motor on a 12 system?

      I think most of the wheelchair motors are 24v so yes the reason was the ease of sourcing the motor for a resonable price
