Yeah, honestly don't know how I never figured out how to use magic. Part of the problem is that googling it gave me no answer. I guess every time I set my techniques my eyes glazed over the magic tab in clear view lol. Kind of an obvious mistake.

@@SyntheticMan I don't know if this helps, but I only just figured this out. If you make a good magic instrument (gold coin, fancy material), the damage it does is scaling with the matching essence level on your weapon. So if you have a weapon with 15 Salamander on it, your fire spells go way up.
It wasn't enough to make me use magic, but back in 2000 when I played it as a kid, I could not figure out how to make magic not suck.

      @Poopulan Před 2 lety +2

@@ValeVin I had the same issue. The magic spell type also matters too. Top Damage: Sphere / Line, Medium Damage: Fan / Control / Random, Low Damage: Circle / Donut.
The essence thing only really applies to enemies weak against the element. That said, you can one shot guys on no future with the perfect magic build to an element strong against them.

FF8 nice game overall, really interesting, and it seems to enable fair replayability value with different tactics... but there's something very strange about an RPG game that has no Weapons or Armor (I think Chrono Cross was a bit like that to an extent, Stat changes don't matter much) CRPG's (western RPG's) still my favorite by far, even if the "illusion of choice" is there

LoM is easily one of the best RPG's on the PS1, and it has aged really well. The combat, though simplistic, still holds up. The graphics, even the og version, are still beautiful. The music, scored by the now legendary Yoko Shimomura, kicks ass. And the mechanics and systems, baffling as they are, are refreshingly deep compared to contemporary titles. This game is so very underappreciated. EDIT: Also, I don't know if the remaster has this feature but in the original you weren't just limited to coop when you had an existing companion. At one of the houses in Domina, you could pop a memory card into the second slot and your friend could import their character from their game (or just one of your own saves), and play using that character at any time.

      can you elaborate?

    • @salamanderred8148
      @salamanderred8148 Před měsícem

@@EXHellfirehmm, I won't say I am certain to say what type of love each story had.
But I'll try my best to explain why there're love related topic there.
Star crossed Lovers (AKA Priest X Demon X Swordman, with a help from Cat Like Friend). This is the most obvious.
Matilda the Priest did love the demon, so much so, she wouldn't want to limit him, even more she didn't regret giving him her spirit power, she loved him, far as he is, doing something she would never known, even as she aged rapidly. I dunno about her feeling, but perhaps she feels confined doing priestess stuff.
Irwin gave her the freedom she desired and so she wouldn't try to cage Irwin too.
She is bound to her role as a high priestess, and wouldn't try to disappoint her followers anymore. Her suffering in a sentence would be "could it be possible to be free while in a cage?". In the end, she is free, and knows that Freedom in the end, stems from the soul first , not from physical first. A true mother would be bound to her child, unable to do a lot of things she could do before, yet never once she felt regret, despise nor being chained and tortured because of her children. Yet as a child, she desired freedom more as physical, and in the freedom to befriend anyone, including Irwin.
The Demon, Irwin, he loved Matilda back, I guess, but his love to himself and hatred towards human are far bigger than his love to Matilda. He wouldn't stand under human, not anymore, he craved power, perhaps also because of the traits and instinct as a demon to crave destruction. Yet as it is, he still cared for Matilda, to the point he looked for a way to send her to Spirit World? That one where one can manifest own appearance according to own's will. He did desire for Matilda to be young again, to undo the evil he needed to do to achieve his goal. In the end when everything ended, he was lamenting the fact that he did get entangled with a love spell named Matilda before he chose to be reborn.
One love he felt during all those hatred and prejudices, yet he was the one who ruined that love, by his own hand.
Perhaps it will be better if he was later born as truly evil, so Matilda can hate him to the fullest, and also so he can hate himself to the fullest.
Regarding Irwin, it reminded me about a line from a Manhwa a out half Vampire.
"I was shunned by humans, treated unfairly by humans, lived like humans, do you understand how it feels to desire to be a human?".
And Matilda is the one who will said "You're also a human, even more human than any humans I have seen, since humanity doesn't just comes from physical flesh, it comes from the heart".
Too bad the hatred has been planted ,and her love seed has been overshadowed.
Escad, dunno about his feeling for Matilda, probably did have feeling for her too, since they did grow together.
But his hatred towards demonkind far exceeded his love towards Matilda (dunno was it because he is assigned the job to guard her or because he hated that the priestess love demon more than him a fellow human).
He hated that demon (Irwin), for tainting the priestess. He had a frame of what a lovable priestess Matilda should be, yet he cared little about what Matilda wanted to be.
"Irwin,it's all Irwin's fault, he corrupted Matilda, the sweet, sweet magnificent Matilda, young brimming with hopes and potentials.
He took Matilda from us, from me, the Goddess of Mana may forgive him, but I won't ."
And off he goes sword training to kill a demon from his childhood. Perhaps if things go different, he could be BFF with Irwin.
Now Daena, her position is more of a jury, pacifier, judge, support for Matilda.
I dunno about racism, but obviously racisms did exist there, pretty obvious in Imperial Soldier like Thoma story, however since there are so many races already, one just can't simply being racist to all.
Daena is a cat girl, furry version, racism wise, she is pretty strange sight in a temple that is full of human nun, and some walking bushes. So I guess she is more tolerating towards Irwin as a fellow out of place being.
She is pretty moderate in viewing Matilda Irwin Escad relationship, more ephasizi in Matilda Happiness though, she is a good friend for fellow girl, not that backstabbing gossiping behind your back friend.
For Daena, Matilda Happiness is more important, her position, anyone can fill it, she is replaceable as a priestess, but for a friend, she is her precious friend, and wherever she is, whether it's with Escad or with Irwin, if she is happy, Daena will be happy too.
In fact she even faced both Irwin and Escad respectively , trying to get into them, she is there to fight for Matilda's happiness.
One of the most captivating moment of Daena IMHO, would be when Matilda told her to look for her own happiness too.
And Daena said that her happiness is when the others are happy, to which Matilda said to her, if it's just so, then she would never be happy.
LOM is good at portraying love and it's corrupted side.
And this is just one story.

I like this game. It has a lot of very fun systems and side mechanics to play with. The biggest negative that anyone should be aware of before buying LoM is that it is incredibly easy. Most bosses can be defeated by planting yourself in front of them, tanking their hits, and smacking them with basic attacks until they die. If you're playing on emulator, there is a hard mode mod that makes the game much more challenging in a way that I think improves it immensely.

We played it mostly in middle school while staying at each other's houses on the weekends and summer vacations. We didn't have easy access to a computer or websites in 2001, so we had to figure everything out for ourselves lol. Customizing weapons and armor in the smithy is still opaque science to me lol. Also you can combine lunge/retreat to do evade so you can get effectively 3 techniques. Spin is by far the easiest to combo though as you can punch during it and aoe enemies while also stunning them. Aside from that, you also can do plunge attacks by doing button inputs and you can get new ones by forging in mystic cards. That said, that's for helping the game get more visibility! I love the complexity and how completely opened ended it is.

Just FYI, the only reason the original backgrounds were pixelated was because of PS1 compression to fit on a CD and the total quality of the game. All the backgrounds were paintings but the compression actually made it go really well with the pixel art at the time. But it was clear if you look back that the backgrounds weren't pixel art at all. :D
Also correction time: The game has at least SIX battle themes:
1 - The regular ones for the start missions, Jumy jewel hunters, etc.
2 - A bigger one for high stake bosses.
3 - One for Human bosses or very specific, magic related encounters (Bud, Lisa, Shadow Zero One).
4 - One for the Faeries(Only played during Lucemia's Final Boss).
5 - One for the Dragons (Only played at the end of the Flames Dungeon).
6 - One for the Jumis (Only played at the end of the Bejeweled City Dungeon).
7 - One for the Final Boss (Only played during the end of the Tree of Mana Dungeon).
It is true that the first two play more than the others. And I agree that this game deserved MORE musics for each dungeon, a lot of dungeons share the same theme. But they are good enough for me to ignore that.

A lot of the crafting mechanics work with each other. If you're trying to get a specific food for your pet, there's a much better chance you revisit levels and catch eggs/spirits. If you're making different equipment in the workshop, you have components for the golem. Spending time at home and learning what the different items do adds a ton of hours to this game, since every little thing is usable for tempering or as food. The fact that every item is functional is probably the most experimental feature of all.

Great video. I played the game on the PS in the good old days and I bought it on PC. Always a good one. Not sure if u know it but there will be a new mana game. Square is working on one. After all the reworks and remasters I also asked myself "will there be a new game or what is this all about?" and some days later I've read that they are working on it. Great!
Concerning trials of mana. The originial Seiken Densetsu 2 was my favorite game of all mana games and I can highly recommend the trials of mana rework! Its awesome! :)

Legend of Mana is my all time favorite game. I wasn’t the biggest gamer when I was a kid. But my brother and I got a PlayStation for Christmas one year. We had Jetmoto 2 and a couple other basic games. My uncle found LOM wrapped in a napkin for a dollar at some rinky dink pawn shop in the middle of nowhere. And brought it to us. We put it in and the rest is history. My brother and I became OBSESSED with this game. Played it constantly could hardly ever put it down. So much depth and so much to do for its age and being only on one disc. To this day I have still not completed the game. I haven’t even unlocked all the locations yet. The hand drawn visuals and astonishingly good soundtrack never ever stop surprising me. This is an incredible game. And I highly recommend everyone play it.

I recently replayed the PS1 version of this game. I remembered enjoying it because of the cool design, amazing music and the big epic boss fights. Those are still true.
What I DIDN'T remember was all the godforsaken godforsaken sidequests and idiotic characters. I could count all the ones who made good decisions on one hand, and I built or tamed most of those.
I played with several guides and still missed a quest, which... yeah.

i have this game on my vita w that version and its still a great game and the original had some chug issues at points i think due to it trying todo alot at times w alot of the game being so random/u design it and effect the random quests etc so i think it was memory/processing issues they never could iron out
still this game was beyond its time in terms of things it did future squaresoft/enix games and rpgs/jrpgs in general do now w the crafting min maxing the build your own world setup for replayability
it was imho peak design at least in the terms of its scope it set out for was super wide but wasnt shallow
as you said its so fucking deep u almost need a guide or many many replays to figure stuff out yet could enjoy it even on a shorter play through
it was and alway will be one of the best rpgs ever made to me bar none even if story wise it isnt too heavy like fallout its still got just enough for anyone to enjoy it on a variety of levels
i wish devs today would learn from old games like these and bring back an era of making good games and just trying to make them fun first and any experimental or hardcore stuff is there but its not mandatory its for those who wanna do more and dig deeper

Oooof, bro I'm about to go into a primer on the combat, abilities unlock other abilities which it looks like you figured out, unlocking all of them, gives you the potential to unlock more special techs, there are plunge attacks, like down forward is an uppercut, forward forward for lunge, i think the last is either back forward or down back forward, which are customizable and given different effects by tempering cards into the weapons

    • @Kilwede1
      @Kilwede1 Před 2 lety

Figured you got most covered except that those instruments play magic which someone already stated. Magic power being determined by the materials used. Also the whole forbidden tome deal that appears after you complete the game which levels the enemies, even to excess with one level every enemy being lvl99. Having a firm grasp of the combat mechanics and your options makes dealing with that much easier

Oooh, you missed the part where you can co-op with another save file, but it’s an obscure unlockable feature that you get from an obscure unlockable side-quest (can’t remember exactly but it involves a museum in one of the cities, I think it’s Geo, and progress in like two of the main quest lines)
Other than that yeah, co-op requires a secondary party member to be with you
Also there’s a perfectly understandable reason why they haven’t fully remade this game, yet or possibly at all, and that’s the ridiculous amount of weapons, instruments, armor, and items that would have to be programmed into the game, plus the whole three piece interwoven quest with side-quests, PLUS the entire overworld being a DIY puzzle board, PLUS THE GOLEMS
    AND THE MONSTERS
    THAT IS A LOT
    OF
    WORK
And I get it, it’s Square-Enix, “They can do it”, “They have the funds and the resources”, but do they have the incentive? Over the rest of the games they make?
It may happen, yeah, trust me I love this game, but I’m not expecting it any time soon, we just got an anime adaptation tho, so who knows? Maybe they’ve already been working on it?
I mean shit, NOBODY expected Seiken Densetsu 3 to even get recognition, let alone a full remake, but here we are with Trials of Mana anyway 🤷‍♂️

First, I say good on you for switching it up to a very refreshing old school JRPG.
...I guess it will be awhile before you touch another JRPG again, but if or when it should happen, I would be happy to recommend that you should let a little Falcom into your life and maybe play some Ys.
I suggest not going for the newest game, Ys 9 Monstrum Nox, but instead either play Ys 8 Lacrimosa of Dana or Ys Memories of Celcata.
Or if you don't want a party combat game and would rather do the old school solo style, I'd highly recommend Ys Origins, or for a damn good combat challenge try Ys Oath in Felghana.
All I suggested are absolutely wonderful action JRPGs that have really good world building (GOD TIER), lovable characters, nice waifus, and solid combat.
Wish I could suggest to you my most beloved series from Falcom, but I don't think it's a JRPG you'd be interested in. It's kinda something of a slow burner...

Your wrong regarding the Magic aspect.... Have you reach that you craft Instruments with materials + Elemental Coins....Thats how you do magic in this game.
There is also depth in the way you handle the combat you can cultivate your own move set by unlocking specific move forward dash + backward dash something then you creat new move, by doing so you will unlock more weapon move....
Another mistake is that you unlock weapon moveset not on the number of use but in the characters moves that you do like using One-Hand Sword with Spin Attack it unlocks an AOE Limit Break centered on Shiloh/Serafina....
To add when you craft/customize weapon you can enchant it with weapon cards which modify the weapons combat interaction.... I remember i made a One-Hand Sword with blood sucker in certain attack.
Or putting Lord of Flies Card in a Cap which greatly enhance agi stats.... Even Pet Raising has its system what in depth are you looking for you have not even do everything in the game.....

These graphics are fantastic and would be super impressive by the standards of today's 2D indie games. I got sick of JRPGs during the 32 bit era because I found the blocky prerendered aesthetic of 32 bit games to be a huge step down from the vivid, colorful pixel art I got used to in SNES Squaresoft RPGs, but this game would've blown my mind if I'd played it when it was new. I missed it at the time cuz I became less interested in gaming after realizing that bad, barely-functioning 3D was gonna be a mainstay of the gaming industry for years to come.
