This show is amazing - just pure 80es cartoon campiness. Heroes deliver the most laugh-inducing lines with outmost heartfelt dramatic conviction, the events barely make sense and yet follow a certain hot-blooded logic. It won me over within the first episode by the sheer entertainment value of ridiculous 80s tropes on parade. I don't think 10 seconds go by in this show without a line that makes me cry with laughter. And if you think I'm calling it bad, far from it. I think it's a masterpiece. The unintentional hilarity and self-parody only makes it more special.

Defenders of the Earth sounds amazing. I may have to look it up later. I love your history recaps and your whacky sense of humor. It would be pretty cool if Phantom was my dad. I love animals and it would be neat to talk to them!

For a barely forgotten teamup, I agree this was the team up before Marvel. I own the entire series on DVD and love the phantom (the ghost who walks). Not to mention the catchy theme song. Sad it didn't have a longer run which makes me upset your video tells it like it is. I enjoy your videos do thank you

I was a huge fan of Defenders of the Earth as a kid and it served as my introduction to many of those classic King's Feature Heroes except for Flash Gordon and Ming whom I'd encountered in the 1930s serial before.
Oddly enough, this is also one of the very cartoons from my childhood that my Mom remembers. He-Man and She-Ra ans M.A.S.K. don't ring a bell, but Defenders of the Earth does, probably because she was a big fan of the Phantom comic strip.

When I got the new Toy Galaxy Notification for a new episode featuring The Defenders of The Earth, I got super excited! Not only did I grow up watching this cartoon in the glorious 1980’s but I owned all of the action figures and boy did I love them. I’ve always been a big Phantom and Flash Gordon fan and the fact that King Features Syndicate took all of their O.P. Original characters like The Phantom, Mandrake The Magician, And Lothar and teamed them up with Flash Gordon, made a very impressive serial style episodic cartoon series. I absolutely love this cartoon! The toys were badass as well. All of the syndicated Marvel Entertainment cartoons were always very well done. They made these King Feature characters feel very much like a Marvel property. The best part about the information given on this cartoon during this Toy Galaxy episode is that I learned that The Defenders of The Earth is on Amazon Prime to stream. I own the DVD Collection but some how I lost the second volume which makes me very sad. As far as which Defender character I would want as my father since this is a hypothetical question, I undoubtedly would choose The Phantom because he is not only the first fully costumed masked superhero in the medium but because he is completely and utterly awesome and Badass! I really liked how in the Defenders cartoon The Phantom had the added power of mimicking animal abilities in addition to his standard superhero prowess! As always this has been a great video and I look forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!

Man i use to love this as a kid, getting up on a saturday morning watching all my favourite superhero shows from Defenders of the Earth, Thundercats and more and later that day watch me some Streethawk, Knightrider even A-Team. These were the best times for watching great shows both in morning and evening. I still cant get over the fact i sold all my childhood toys from every iconic shows, movies on carboots every weekend until i sold everything, i had thousands. I matured too early as a child, due to family issues and began to lose interest in the things i loved and collected, Stuff you will never see again especially 30cm Rubber Wrestlers.

Hardly forgotten- I watched the show on Saturday afternoons, wanted the toyline (but was too busy buying Transformers), and my mom got me the plastic lunchbox (sans thermos) at a rummage sale (kept my drawing supplies in it).
Now I have the entire series on DVD (as well as the mentioned SciFi Flash Gordon series, btw) and I still revisit the cartoon occasionally- one of DIC's better offerings.
One last thing: since you brought up The Phantom, can you do a video on 1994's Phantom 2040? It was a nice little series with a stellar voice cast- and I still have the Sega Genesis game.

The concept for Defenders of the Earth was rather good.
The Phantom did have a tradition of the role being passed from father to son (or daughter) but in the comic strip, the Phantom's daughter was Heloise, not Jenna. Flash Gordon's computer based after the persona of his wife, Dale Arden, was later echoed in The New Adventures of Jonny Quest, with Dr. Quest's AI named Iris, after his wife.
It was hard to credit Mandrake & Flash Gordon having kids as it was never established in the original strips.
Stan "The Man" Lee did dream up the theme song of Defenders of the Earth.
Wonder if an animated Justice Inc. (The Avenger/The Shadow/ & Doc Savage) would've fared better.
