      Thank you. I think, they are common nouns and things. But they refer to places. If I say: The river was dirty, then its a thing. If I say: Meet me at the river, then I am referring to a place. Then again if i say river bird then it is an adjective. So always check the context.

    To get thorough with phrases and clauses and it's types, which book do I have to read? I'm in grade 8. Mam please help me with this question. Last week, the flights were delayed due to bad weather (frequently). Should place the adverb in the proper position. Where should I place it? Between the auxiliary verb and main verb or after the main verb? Thank you mam!

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Před 2 lety

      The beauty of an adverb, and indeed one way to identify it, is that it can be placed anywhere in the sentence. It is a movable part of speech. So put it wherever you like.
      As for books. You should buy Language with Ease starting from Grade 4 through to 7 and do the exercises. We will soon be putting up answer keys on kindle. This is the only way you will strengthen grammar, vocabulary and writing. The books are available on our website: www.mindsprings.in

      'wide' ek descriptive word hai jiske baad ek noun lagta hai jaise ki: wide bench, wide space. Abstract noun hai 'width'.
      In Hindi, the difference is between 'chawda' and 'chawdaai'
      Aap dekhni ki mat sochiye, aap concept ki sochiye. wide bench hum dekh sakte hai, par "width" us 'wide' wali quality ko diya gaya naam hai. Abstract.

      You can call it material noun as a branch of common nouns. No problem. I have stuck with 4 nouns as in the future the material noun creates no complications. So the label is immaterial.

    How a dog cant be a proper noun?
    Also how seasons are common nouns?

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Před 2 lety

      A dog is a common animal. There are many dogs, so not proper. If it has a name like Tommy that will be a proper noun.
      Seasons are again a common natural phenomenon. So their names also are common occurrences. Sometimes we use capitals for some natural phenomena but they are still common nouns.
      Check when in doubt. This is no big deal. Be more concerned about spoken English grammar for English.

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Před 2 lety

      Family and chair are common nouns. Chair is not a concrete noun - wood is. Concrete means material not thing. Abstracts are attitudes, emotions, feelings and ideas. Family is a collective for a group of people. If family had a quality of familiness (we don't have this) then that 'quality' would be an abstract noun, like happiness, sorrow, democracy, friendship etc. I hope this is clear.

    Can an activity noun (say search) be the subject of an active voice sentence? Specifically do both the below sentences exhibit correct use of active and passive voice to express SAME logical meaning?
    Sentence 1: Although no success was achieved for five days, the military commander said the search for the terrorists would persist.
    Sentence 2: Although no success was achieved for five days, the military commander said the search for the terrorists would be persisted.

    • @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
      @TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher  Před 3 lety +1

      Ankur I don't know where you get these terms like 'activity noun' from. It is extending the categories of nouns endlessly. I almost mistook the term for a gerund. The meaning of a word might suggest activity but you cannot name it with a grammatical term that is not generic or universal. It is misleading.
      The search, the swim, the find, the jump etc. are all nouns. The presence of the article deems them to be so. These can be subjects of passive voice as they are essentially objects of the actions of someone. e.g. The search was recorded by the archaeologists.
      Such nouns can come in the subject position only where the verbs are linking verbs and take an adjective as subject complement. The search became difficult. This clearly cannot be put to passive.
      In your examples, the second sentence is grammatically wrong.
      Next time, I do a course on grammar course, join up. You have too many doubts.

      I club it with common. But if you want to use another category, you can call wood, plastic, paper, metal material nouns. It is merely a category.

    My English grammar teacher is the worst. she tells everyone that she is going to start a new lesson and then explains a bit that's not even clear and then she starts doing all the exercises she is the worst.

      @@batulcalcuttawala4626 Always be humble my dear. Don't jump up and down when you catch a slip. Exactly as your fingers "slipped" on your keyboard, my tongue can slip. BUT here is bad news for you. It is not at all a "terrible mistake" as you gleefully called it. It is perfectly correct. So calm down. I am talking of endings of nouns here, not abstract nouns. I have used doctor and pianist too, did you notice? Now it is your turn to give me an apology. btw I can and do make mistakes (I'm human). You try talking to a camera for 25 minutes on a complex subject and see how you go.

      And while I am at you, concentrate more on your own English. Your original comment was: Mam you should not say but you have made a terrible mistake... This is what is terrible as mistakes go. It should have been: Ma'am I should not be saying this, but you seem to have made a terrible mistake.... (that would have been more polite as well)
