Looks like some of the dead standing Ash I've been getting. Been dead for a couple years, barkless, mostly, and dried rock hard. It either splits the first swing, or it just laughs at your puny attempts to split it... And if there's a knot in there, it grabs the axe in an iron fist. Most of it splits very easy, it's just that the ones that don't are memorable! You just bounce off of those pieces.
Beech is good stuff, too. I just don't see a lot of it- too much dead standing Ash around, so that's what everyone is cutting. (fine by me- I love the stuff!)
Ash is great firewood, we call it the king. We have die back here to but not well established yet
Beech is some strong stuff!!!
It's 50 / 50 sometimes it's easy sometimes it's a nightmare
Wooly? ??????? ( wooly! !!!!!!!!!😲 Nice.😆 💪💪💪
thanks man
Most of the beech I use has been tough to split because I have been thinning the trees with the bark disease, the trees that have that scabby appearance. The smooth bark tree I took down recently wasn't nearly as hard to split. I hand split about two full chords worth a couple months ago by first doing a 4" vertical cut lengthwise in each 18" long log with my chainsaw, then I insert my maul into the crack & hit it hard with a sledge hammer.
About a 1/3 of the trees on my woodlot are American Beech that are mostly badly diseased, I'm trying to prevent the spread of the bark disease to the trees that are not infected. I'll say one thing about beech firewood is that it is the fastest drying firewwood & hottest burning compared to hard maple or white & red oak I've cut on my lot. I've just started burning beech I cut only this past Spring whereas oak I cut two years ago still bubbles water at the ends when it gets hot in the woodstove.
My understanding is that beech has a much lower green moisture content when initially cut down than oak or hard maple, but after it is cut down & split it must be quickly stacked or fungus sets up & starts rotting the wood within a month or so, you can't leave it laying around on the ground for more than a few days.
Brilliant, thanks for that, it can be tough stuff, any green beech I cut is incredibly heavy but it dries really fast
@@WoolysWorld Beech is at least as heavy as the oak I CSS. I once weighed seasoned logs of oak & beech of the same size as best as I could see it, the beech was slightly heavier, I've forgotten how much heavier.
It's lovely wood I'm actually burning the stuff I split in this video now , burning great
Beech is tough splitting. It's not stringy...just tough!
and it only gets harder, this is the same stuff i split for splitter wars!
Definitely just been splitting a load of the stuff. Very tough wood and if it had a knot in it then it becomes like concrete. Managed to get through most of it with a Fiskars X27 but some of it I needed to get the chainsaw on it.
I give it 3 sacks, if it doesn't split I get the saw on it
This is showing my age, but when you showed us the evil lurking inside that last log, The 'Stones "Heart of Stone" leapt into my head. I've come back twenty minutes later to write this, and let you know that it will probably be on my mental playlist all day now. Thanks a bunch...lol...
lolololo, glad i could help, go and watch the eurovision film, that will take care of that ! yaya
That was painful to watch, no way could I do that.
I think a powered log splitter is called for!
It can be tough all right , but a good tough
First viewing, man your giving yourself a killing. But as you say ‘it’s good’. When was the Beech cut ? What is the best way to dry or season beech, split or in rings. Would a beech tree cut this month, May 2021, be ready to burn this December. Great to watch, well done.
Thanks man, cut and split and stack asap , it might be dry enough , I'd invest in a moisture meter , and ttest it as you go
No shame with splitting beech with a mall, it's tough stuff.
Sure is, you should see my splitter wars videos! Crazy
Well some of a beech that looks like fun
lololo thanks you son of a beech!!
🤪
Woah!! Just about took out the camera on that one! Lol. I got to spend quality time with my old Lombard chainsaw today noodling some really stringy yellow pine. It takes 25 to 1 mix, there wasn't a mosquito around for miles with that old smoker! Nice splitting Wooly, shed looks good with all that wood.
Right on! lolo, do you have many old saws?
@@WoolysWorld I have the Lombard, 288 husqvarna made back in the 80's a 371 that was a predecessor to the 372 and the mini mac, it's the patio ornament. The old Lombard runs strong it was well taken care of by the previous owner.
You got a shed load of wood... I need to have a go on a chain saw.... Lol might buy one this summer fur trimming the roses lol.... Like using the svord bowie to slice watermelon.... Your videos are dangerous to my wallet... But very fun and interesting.....
lololo, husky 435 all the way for your first saw
Wooly looks like it's cooled a bit we hit 89 were in Wis. stay safe, the SR.
men its been like the winter here for the last few days, non stop rain!!

lololo, man been pissing here for days , winter is back
Wooly what the weight on that axe head you got there. I think it looks the same as mine that's been sitting in garage for a long time . Was thinking of putting a handle on it. Looks fun with that axe😆 I've got kelly plumb double heads but I like your one
its 2.5 kg , it s fun alright , i love it, man im sure your kelly is nice!!
@@WoolysWorld Cheers.👍 mate I will get a handle for the head Cheers.👍
you should, great splitter
@@WoolysWorld yes something different your one go's good.😆
Like I say, be smarter than the wood. If it’s beating you, turn it over.
sometime im smrt ! lol yes, its funny how just turning it can make a difference
