  • After her ad-hoc call at Felixstowe on 7th October, where she collected an estimated 2,500 empty containers for return to Asia, Majestic Maersk departed for Suez, leaving the berth at around 10.30am.

    For thirteen years I owned a condominium in San Pedro CA. overlooking the L.A. harbor. I could watch the ships being loaded and unloaded and I could watch them come into port and then leave what a treat that was. I miss it very much!!

    Ouch! Transporting thousands of empty containers back to China. Good thing this ship is the final word in fuel efficiency to ton when you factor in scale of efficiency.

      Its a relative straightforward calculation. Each of the tugs has a very large engine for its size, and can generate very large amounts of thrust - mainly in a fore and aft direction, but they can also push or pull sideways or in any other direction. Tug power is measured in bollard pull - how much force they can exert on a fixed point. The two tugs here can generate a BP of 70 - 80 tonnes each, so its like having two massive outboard engines attached to the ship.
      In calm conditions, the tugs have only to exert enough power to overcome the ship's inertia, and the resistance of the underwater hull to move the ship sideways from the quay. In windy conditions, the wind against the ship's above-water hull will add to the weight they have to pull, and at times one or two additional tugs may be required to lift the ship from the quay. The wind force against the hull can amount to a couple of hundred tonnes, so you can see why extra grunt is needed.
      The ship also has bow thrusters, to help move the bow in either sideways direction, and if forward or astern movement is needed, this is supplied by short burst of power from the main engine - as in "a kick astern".
