- What is prayer? How does it work? Am I doing it wrong? These are questions that many Christians have had and many people of all kinds of faiths have had. And in today's book, in the 52 -book challenge, book eight, we're going to talk about prayer as unpacked in the book If You Will Ask by Oswald Chambers.

I love this. Because when we have a wondering attitude we switch from fear and worry into a faith and trusting mindset. It allows us to look forward to God's answer and stay open to whatever the answer is.
"Prayer is the work" of a believer. That is rich and makes me pause and wonder... Thanks for sharing, Graham.

I read My Utmost For His Highest nearly 30 years ago and I still remember what a brilliant, at times challenging (!) God-inspired book it was. Jesus has been my best friend since I was 5 years old, and although I've grown and matured in my faith, still under it all is a little girl who goes on adventures through life with Jesus, and knows through everything He's never left me. I gave up trying to 'figure out' God years ago because the harder I try the more confused I get. Why some prayers are miraculously answered with healings (with no other explanation,) and others are heart-breakingly not I don't know, and this side of Heaven I never will. But I do know that somehow He's the God who makes wrong things right, who weaves goodness and grace and mercy through the toughest of times, and who delights in surprising us with joy if we're along for the ride. Some seasons of life are amazing, joy-filled adventures, others are so hard it's a success that you can just keep getting up each morning (and during those times you remember that the good seasons will return at some point, because they have in the past.) (Hmmmmmmm... really didn't mean to write so much!) Thanks for sharing this book. 😊

Just finished My Utmost for His Highest again last year. Such depth. So challenging.
I was just discussing prayer with my husband and how a child’s expectation when they pray is so different from an adults. (See Mark chapters 10-11) we are challenged by our LORD to have childlike faith and believe. Wide-eyed and innocent; utterly dependent; lacking experience and understanding; hopeful; trusting; believing. Living with anticipation. Not cynical; but rather full of awe. Not jaded, but full of wonder. Open to receive the blessings of God.
And in chapter 11 of Mark
I love that Jesus doesn’t tell us that answers *can* happen, but that they *will* happen (Mark 11:24).
I wonder how God will answer this prayer. Good stuff!
This book has been such a blessing in my life. Prayer IS the work! And just as Chambers talks about, when I asked for and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit (even after being a Christian all my life), everything changed for me and my prayer life just deepens and deepens. He is faithful and so good.🙏The part I’m still chewing on is ‘If ye shall ask, ye shall receive.” But I know that the Holy Spirit will only continue to work in me to give me understanding on it and experiences that will allow me to grasp it more fully!
