There is no other band on planet earth that sounds like Sonic Youth, the best band of all time. I saw them live twice and I was amazed.
I can only imagine scrolling through channels and stumbling upon this by accident. If that was me back then my life would be changed forever.
That’s exactly what happened to me. It was the first time I ever heard them, too.
I knew steve was a cool drummer, but he’s actually playing pockets all over the place. He’s totally in charge of the sound!
the dude is brilliant, perhaps the most underrated key to their sound - everyone is on fire here of course but this is not a song that Bob Bert (their previous drummer) could've done justice, no offense to him. Steve was just the perfect rhythm section for this band.
Most underrated drummer ever??
@@Laneganswakeabsolutely
He's the lead..
Steve Shelley is amazing, and really took them to the next level.
I saw them live in 1991, the concert ended at around 10:00 pm on a Saturday with Kim tossing her bass in the air and finally letting it fall to the ground, playing it with her feet, and Thurston knocking down amps by swinging around his guitar and then placing it on top of them, producing massive feedback. After that I went to spend the night in a youth hostel and could not understand a word of what the receptionist tried to explain to me, we had to shout at each other. On Tuesday at 6:00 pm my ears stopped ringing.
It's worth suffering slight hearing loss to see a band like SY! I think I shattered my eardrums when I saw Einsterzende Neubaten! Now they were loud!
tell us more!
I lost 20% of my hearing in my left ear on their tour for Washing Machine at Paris Bercy in 1997 or 1996 at 17 or 16 years old, some frequencies are definitely gone and i have a permanent ringing. One of my favorite concert ever is also one of my greatest regrets. I always brought ear plugs to concerts from that day on.
apparently there was an encore czcams.com/video/zL-iwvzAsaQ/video.html
Now imagine that, but it’s a Deep Purple concert
Greatest album I ever bought.
Yep, changed my life at 14!
Still have a copy in the car for those long drives.
Didn’t know music could be like that until I bought that tape all those years ago.
I come back to this every one in a while to re-like. Pay homage to the church of Sonic Youth
This was the first time I ever heard them and I was totally blown away. Been a fan ever since.
Greatest guitar band of all time
Ahhh Sonic Youth...I love you. The best band- probably their best song
I remember watching this when it aired on TV and recorded it on VHS. Back when you had to open up the TV program to find pit who was playing on TV. There were some cool musical guests on this show. I believe it was called "Night Music " or "Sunday Night" at one point, hosted by David Sanborn. Came on around 1am. Sun Ra was also on this show.
Pixies made their American television debut on this show.
From incredible melodic to insane wall of beatiful noises back to melodic again. Sonic Youth will always be inspiration for many.
great performance by steve shelley
he is the one who controls the tracks
absolutely right
amidst the anarchic cacophony the only sense of direction comes from Steve. in any nearly other band it would sound like an oxymoron, but the truth is he's an avant garde pocket player.
Powerful and fluid. Steve is probably one of the most underrated drummers in rock music. All genres.
naw i disagree.
With the stuff that Thurston and Lee are doing, Steve is the only thing keeping the train on the tracks. So he's controlling the tracks and the tracks 🛤️
How is it possible that these guitars are still in tune after such a mindblowing Performance?
Tom Peterson I guess they weren’t ever in tune 😁
They were in a special tune😁
They never were 😂
they were never in tune, it's all in your head
the same thing amazes me. no matter how they're tuned, clearly they retain it for the duration of the song, which is all that matters. i guess they knew exactly what each instrument could take and stay in tune as long as it needed to.
Fucking insanity. Possibly the best live video of this song on youtube. Everyone was on fire front to back.
The noise freakout section is legendary. Always love SY ❤
I'm amazed how their guitars and bass go through all that and somehow stay in tune...
they're not in tune ... but when you have some many out of tune things playing it gels. that is how it works. I've been in it... literally
Just beautiful. Miss em too
no doubt. me three. there's always the music they DID make, though, which is fan-fuckin'-tastic.
Make a nice song, then tear it apart and stomp on it, then pick it up, hose it off, and walk it back to center stage.
That is Sonic Youth, here in a compact form (this song being a good introduction to the band's general approach). It's hardcore jazz, one might say. An unsuspecting club owner or two may have said a few other things, back in the day, but for us there is a lot of NY-subway beauty in that raging racket.
Thanks for the memories.
yeah the part where it got really unmusical and they started moving their bodies all weird to make the amps feed back in different sorta untuneful ways was really unique. nobody ever does that because they are afraid to make unpleasant sounds. these guys are real. this song is totally unpleasant in places. so creative.
Comment section rants - on the other hand - are totally unique and creative
Unmusical ?
This performance is fucking legendary
Steve and Lee are 75% of the Sound. Let's be Real.
Props to the sound engineers!
damn, this sounds so good. YT algorithm hitting the mark today.
I've always wondered if Thurston and Kim actually ever did see Cats on Broadway.
Love for ever
I watch this everyday
the whole performance is on gourmet level
Seeing this back then was a life changing experience. Music was never the same again for me.
😊 thank you.
I saw this performance for the first time tonight and I'm like "woah". This is fucking intense.
that's some heavy guitar abuse also I love it
Sonic Youth are the true gods of "No Wave", "New Wave", "Punk Rock", "Alternative Rock", "Grunge Rock", "Experimental", "Noise", Noise-Core" & hell even "Disco" !
Art punk, Avant Punk, Avant rock or Experimental rock ?
@@andrejbrada9325 That too, they are probably the biggest modern (1980+) influence in alternative music today.
Prog rock
Real “punk” to play for an alcohol company.
@@JackPeloquin what’s the context to that
i like how he just mentions j mascis out of nowhere
lives up the street..., as they did for a while.
Merci. C'est tellement bon.
Overwhelming.
Rawwwww!! Couldn't be better!
Best album of the 80s OMG
All depends on when you hit them: I saw them on the Evol and Sister tours and those albums are Sonic. I found DN just a tad over produced.
Goddamn the way they use feedback is so insanely creative
Best band ever in the earth
Two words - Steve Fucking Shelley.
underrated SONIC YOUTH song !
Fucking Amazing, The sound & the performance, love it...
Ty SY 🙂
Best band I never saw. Unfortunately they opened for Neil Young and Crazy Horse that night. As usual I was in the stairwell puffing doobies while they were on the stage.
Yeah it's good rock & noise !
Beast performance! Big BEAST!
That lyric shift tho.
Love u guys
Damn right 👍 for your input!
Awesome! Thought Lee was going to loose an eye for a second! Lee almost loosing an eye was not awesome...the music was! You know just to be clear.
Immense!
Alternative tuning legends. How many guitars did Thurston abuse in his career?
About 49 documented guitars Thurston abused
my kind of 80s
Saw them in 1990. Drew straws to see who would get back stage since we only had two passes. Jesus lizard opened for them. Needless to say drew one of the straws, met them and the rest is history.
I hope you guys upload the other performance from the same night, the stooges cover. Ive seen it on youtube already, but a better quality official upload would be greatly appreciated. =)
I Wanna Be Your Dog?
Lee looks so fucking cool
Grandioso!! C:
Love
esto es precioso
Power, sonic youth. Power
Majestic!
Revolutionary 😮
This was on the "Screaming Fields of Sonic Love" VHS tape, which had different tracks from the CD of the same name. I bought this in 95 or 96 I think.
Specifcly about the album "Evol" from 85' to about "Washing Machine" from 96'.
Sonic Youth is as close to a perfect band as there is out there
exciting,🖤sonic youth
Boy, they sound tight...
Steve Jay Shelley, baterista estadounidense, nacido el 23 de junio de 1963 en Midland, Míchigan. Formó parte de la formación original de la banda de punk: "Crucifucks".
That was Silver Rocket with a semi-hidden Total Trash insert. Two song medley.
That was actually pretty great.
Stories, so many tales to tell. One: Attending a Jim Foetus (Scraping Foetus off the Wheel) in London, 1988, and being bored and hanging out at the bar with the Butthole Surfers. Back to a big round table, joined by Sonic Youth. We then took the tube to the Surfer's hotel listening to insane ditties of jumping out windows, smoking crack and waking up to champagne breakfast with Gibby and the Sugar Cubes. I changed my brain that day and night.
That sounds right
wow.
The absolute masters of justified dissonance. Not to mention that a woman rocking the hell out of a Gibson Thunderbird bass is the definitive wet dream. Amazing band. Miss em
Kim Gordon.
Elle est enthousiasmante.
You know you can look at a woman without necessarily sexualising her?
@@VuotoPneumaNN I'm actually sexualizing a musical instrument, which is something you might not understand if you're not obsessed with guitars and basses since you're a kid. I play guitar and bass and I'm totally in love with Gibson instruments, so the fact that (if you like it or not) a timeless "sex symbol" like Kim Gordon is using such a great looking and sounding bass, is just a plus. Respect and love to Kim Gordon
You don't need to sexualize Mrs. gordon rocking that bass-go back your video games!
NOISE ROCK!
0:02 grande don Ramón
Thurston es el maestro longaniza 👍
Lee’s bullseye amp rocks
good job
This was a life changing event for me.
❤
Snake in it, jack into the wall
TV amp on fire blowing in the hall
Gun your sled, close your peeping toms(?)
Turbo organizer cranking on the knob(?)
You got it
Yeah! Ride your silver rocket
I Can't stop it
Burning hole in your pocket
Hit the power, psycho helmets on(?)
You got to splice your halo, take it to a moon(?)
Nympho id clamor fueling up the hammer(?)
You got to fake out the robot and pulse up the zoom(?)
You got it
Yeah! Ride your silver rocket
I Can't stop it
Burning holes in your pocket
[Instrumental Break]
Can't forget the flashing
Can't forget the smashing
The sending and the bending
The atmosphere re-entry
You gotta have the time
Got another in your mind
Got your heart injected
And you got your soul aligned
You got it
Yeah! Ride your silver rocket
Can't stop it
Burning holes in your pocket
What year was this brilliance¿
so weird to see any of them playing a strat
they started with stratocasters until they saw j mascis of dino jr doing funny stuff with jazzmasters
@@mikadoescontent nah, they started with some no name guitars, like harmony and then bought jazzmasters, mainly using Tom Verlaine from Television as a reference
@@electromuff7870 but lee came to sonic youth with a tele deluxe from the 1970s that he bought in high school (said in earthquaker devices show us your junk)
@@mikadoescontent oh yeah , I somewhat forgot about that and they had a jaguar since 1985. I meant that a majority of the guitars they played in the earlier days were cheap pawn shop like guitars, like the Harmony H15 Bobkat that Thurston brought into Sonic Youth. Lee did play a Hondo strat in 1986 and the Fernandes (the one in this video) since about 1988.
@@electromuff7870 yeah, he also played the tele (which is also stolen in the 1999 gear theft but got recovered) i mentioned earlier to the same show in this video but they were covering i wanna be your dog by the stooges
🤘🤘🤘
They're literally Sonic and the MC5's kids and they are perfect. I wonder where Iggy's grandkids are? Where are the rock n' rollers?
Man! That guitar sounds hungry 2:14
What's a Nirvana?
Wow. Haven’t seen Dave Sanborn in years.
Shelley's like, "OK, Thurston, Lee -- that's enough."
gnarley fuck yea !!!
How could the Jazzmaster stay in tune after that ?
My memory is very fuzzy. I did used to watch this show, was this the episode with Sun Ra?
Yeah and the host was a dick and took a solo during the closing credits--not cool to just think you can jam with Sun Ra, even if you are the host.
Kool Thing
Awesome!!! Haven't heard that song in years.
What a weird introduction. "With their manager Don Fleming on keyboard." WTF? Did the manager request that that piece of information be delivered? I've never heard anything like that.
Its probably because Fleming isnt a full time member of the band so people would be asking who the hell is that guy on the keyboard
How the hell did that Strat stay in tune?
seeing Lee playing a Strat... ugh. no no no!
What year is this from?
David Sanborn is a cool af host.. oh, BTW Shelley was killing it in this..
legendary performance by cience class bro Shelley. truly a legend here
это кайф
Beck in the keyboard. Awesome haha
So this is what happened to Potter and Weasley after Hogwarts
What’s the line? “J mascis raging out with” what?
