Thank you so much Andy. You have been a huge help, Godsend really, and have started me out back in Dec 2018 with the 10 free lessons vids and i haven't stopped since! Peace
You need to learn how to alternate pick. And the easy way to hold a pick could be a bad habit that is holding you back? This guy alternate picks but doesn't get into it.
I've been told that the more you know the less you think you know. I guess that means you know enough to know there is so much more. It is the ones who think they know it all that actually know very little. So it sounds to me like you are probably doing pretty good. That's without hearing you play but it is an indication.
Another element worth considering is whether you can sustain clean playing (of whatever level of complexity) and solid rhythm with others and most especially when performing live. There are lots of fairly simplistic guitarists who can stay solid with a band or even solo through a set and lots of others who can play more complex stuff in their bedroom but can’t keep it together in live performance.
I learn piano with him first 3 yrs ago. Now is guitar 🎸. I can Play not fast 3 songs of his. I feel I am in the middle somewhere of beginner and intermediate, 3 to 4 months playing I think I dream with the guitar lol at 69 I am nuts 🤪 doing this but it's fun. He is good at what he does and comes out at time being so funny. Just love him. He is so humble .
Played at my cousins wedding two weeks ago. Definitely was surprised when she asked me to play, as I was only 6 months in and have now only played for 13 months. Learned skinny love and iris in the original tunings over the weekend. Working on cherry wine now
that's amazing, i'm less than two years in and am starting to do open mics but i would not feel ready to do a wedding or anything on that scale! Well done you!
How often do you practice? I try to practice every day for no less than 30 mins, but still feel stagnant. I’ve had my acoustic for about 4 months not sure if it’s what I’m practicing or the time I’m putting in that’s making me feel stuck. I still really enjoy it so I guess that’s what matters most.
@@gordob8674 Everybody hits plateaus mate, persevere through the times where you feel like you’re standing still and you’ll pick up traction again soon. Good luck
Been playing a couple years, up until recently have considered myself a beginner but watching this and looking at the sort of stuff I can do now I’d call myself an intermediate.
Hi Andy - this is fantastic. I've recently been focusing on expanding my practising - and tried these - which to my surprise I didn't find too difficult. I will of course hone for sure - but at this moment - it has given me a snapshot and a better understanding of where I am and importantly where I should be heading. Many many thanks.
It’s nice to see someone concentrating on Rhythm instead of lead, but they are really two completely separate things. These were intermediate rhythm guitar songs. I’ve been playing rhythm and lead for 40 years and there’s still so much to learn.
I am advanced intermediate, I can play note for note Blackbird, Day Tripper, Paperback Writer, Something, Stairway to Heaven, Layla and Born to Run and multiple alternative tunings.

Well, Andy - I confidently placed myself as an intermediate until you introduced finger picking. I’ve always avoided it because it frightens me, and I didn’t know which song to begin learning. Thanks to this tutorial I’m recharge d & am going to attempt “Hallelujah”. Thanks for all you give back to your “students” worldwide. Cheers from 🇨🇦
I like the differentiation between being able to “play” a song and ACTUALLY play it properly. For example, I had a friend in high school who was a beginner, and came to show off when he learned the chords of “Save Tonight”, but when I listened to him play it it was just basic strumming of the four chords with some pretty sus tempo changes. We gave him credit but of course you spot exactly what’s missing. Being an intermediate rhythm guitarist (even tho it isn’t stated, this video is specifically about rhythm guitar) means you hear the nuanced patterns/muting/hammer-ons etc and can replicate them. Being advanced means you can just play much harder stuff accurately and in time. You’ve started slowly and gotten faster, and now there is no slowing of tempo during hard parts and minimal mistakes. But then also there are many types of advanced guitarists. Dave Gilmour can bend 1, 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 steps to perfection from any fret, incredible phrasing and tone, yet for the beginner-intermediate level fingerstyle on “Is there anybody out there?” they brought in another guitarist to play it. James Taylor can play complex fingerstyle patterns ten different ways subconsciously, but give him a Les Paul, crank the distortion, and ask for a screaming solo, and you may not see the same level of mastery.
I am a beginner and may always be stuck in beginner mode. I know lots of chords and can do quick chord changes, lift-offs and hammer-ons, various strum patterns including muting (love to mute), but finger picking remains a challenge. I seem to be clumsy or just lack patience. It’s like boating….power boats versus sailing. Power boat people love the thrill of speed and reaching a destination quickly. Sailing people love the thinking element, the art of controlling direction with subtle adjustments of the sails with the ever changing wind. Far more patient. Hence, I am a power boater.
i think im in the same boat as you (ho ho), but im trying not to believe that thats just me and that actually im just still being swept along with learning songs with open chords. At some point maybe i will feel like pausing and spending that extra time learning more finger style stuff but at the moment i am loving what im doing
With finger picking, one thing that helps is try to put the finger on the string that finger will be playing and keep them there close so there will be minimal movement. Finger picking was hard at first but I actually picked it up fairly quickly. It's really not as hard as it seems at first and once u get it, it's really fun to play finger style. Hybrid picking is really fun too. Fade to black is a good song to dip ur toe into the hybrid picking pool as it's not too fast.
I am definely a beginning beginner! But I watched just to get an idea of how far I want to go. I played trombone in a concert band at college level, so I have a good sense of rhythm, but I can say that part is probably the hardest to grasp for some people, I've even seen that issue in concert bands.
Would love to see your take on the top 5 advanced guitarists songs. These intermediate songs were all songs I mostly already knew how to play or could tackle no problem, but I wouldn't necessarily considered myself an "amazing" or "advanced" player necessarily
I am fairly certain I'm an advanced intermediate beginner. Been playing on and off for 30 years. Some things I excel at, some I'll never get. Never the less, I still enjoy it.
Interesting lesson... I for one picked up my guitar... Good stuff...Sometimes it takes a little inspiration and challenge for me not to noodle.. Many thanks...
I can do everything apart from the finger style stuff. I've never played without a pick and it really seems alien to me. Time to put down the pick and get me a Parlour.👍
Great video. Ironically I am currently learning three of the five songs as part of an Acoustic Duo gig that I have started recently. I haven’t learnt Hallelujah yet, but I am glad I saw your video first for the capo trick. I hadn’t considered that he had used one for this song, but after hearing you play with it on, it makes so much sense. I am going to learn the other two songs just for the fun of it. I would rate myself as an intermediate player heading towards professional. Thanks for the great video again. 😃🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The song that went next level to me (barre chords) was "Hold My Hand" by Hootie and the Blowfish. Mostly 3 chords in B and the verse starts with a B add 9 instead of the plain old B major... hint: the add 9 chord is easier to play.
A fantastic video, I really enjoyed it! I can't play any musical instruments but I think I have a good ear for quality music. I love so many varieties of Music, cheers Andy.
Happy Thursday, Thanks for the video's. I love playing and singing. I've modified about 40 songs or so for parties and campfires to keep the people focused. Usually get everyone to sing along. I dont play any leads but have been known to adlib with extra chorus or sing the same vs to keep it going. CHEERS!
Feel like I’m mid intermediate, all of these were fine, and I can learn things like “keep your head up” Ben Howard alright. It’s my individual fingers on my left hand that aren’t that quick with slides / scales
Still a beginner after nearly 3 years, but somewhat approaching beginning intermediate. Practice about 1.5 to 2 hours a day when I am home, which is 3 days a week. I think about the guitar and what I'm going to work on the long drives home and purposely leave my guitar at home for the reward.
I’d phrase it slightly differently I think, especially as someone edging towards intermediate... Theory plays a massive part for me and knowing what you are playing has to be part of the discussion. Advanced players know what they are playing, can play over changes, picking out target notes using key centres and chord functions. Maybe Intermediates are starting to get some broad knowledge around some theory but it’s more about playing songs and them sounding correct. Beginner is about getting your hands to move, keeping time/tempo and getting the right strings to ring out. There’s always another level to strive for. Guitar is 🔥🔥🔥
thanks Andy....you've cemented that I think I'm a pretty confident intermediate player (having performed both Fast Car and Blackbird live at gigs)...my issues will always be speed and clarity of tone. Picking individual notes right time every time...
Excellent playing and instruction as usual Andy. For future I’d really like a finger style lesson on Amazed by Lonestar. Now there’s a challenge? Really impressed by that Faith guitar your using btw.
I can play these songs fairly easily - not perfect but only took a minute or 2 to get the gist of each...there is no way I'm an "intermediate" guitar player though. Advanced beginner perhaps but yeah, these are fun campfire type songs in my opinion and I'm going to use them as nice finger stretcher/familiar tune to strum for other people and as a base track on my looper to noodle around on. I really love to try and figure out the vocal melody as a lead line for guitar because I haven't sung since 2006 when I was in a band. Thanks for the inspiration!
Ofc this is also dependent on what style(s)/technique(s) you're aiming to develop (best is a wide variety of course!). I've been playing for 20 years, but I've never tried these songs. I've mostly focused on metal music in my earlier years, last year I was learning more funk, now I'm more interested in 'classic rock' and grunge like things, as well as Hendrix style playing. I'm sure I could play these songs with a bit of practice but not as quickly as something I'm more familiar with. In a way maybe that makes me a beginner player within this style/set of techniques.
After 3 years I still cant barre. So I no this negates me to beginner. Ex mma so my hands/joints are not the best. Very annoying as I know I can be better. I love Arpeggio btw.
How crazy, I started about 2 years ago ish, and the first lesson I watched was his seven day course I think. He said “10 minutes a day to become a guitarist” lol, and I can say for certain yea right. I’ve put all my free time into the guitar, probably at the minimum of 10 hours a week, probably closer to 18-20 (and that’s not joking, I go into a vortex and play for hours) and here I’am realizing I already knew all the songs for intermediate. I however don’t feel like I’m intermediate yet lol, this bar non is my most difficult undertaking, and as a recovering addict with a very addictive personality this is basically my new drug.
I feel like the jump from beginner to intermediate is much quicker and easier than the jump from intermediate to advanced. It’s hard to be a really good guitar player.
Always consider myself a beginner till I can play through a whole song. 8 years and still only a couple. But I’m not doing it for my dinner so I’m ok with it. Need a song of “intros” and I’ll be cooking!
When I was 18, Metallica released ‘And justice for all….’ I heard One and immediately rushed out and bought a mega cheap acoustic then badgered my friend (a most excellent guitarist) to teach me how to play it. Of course, it was a disaster. I started playing with a tutor 2 years ago…I’m doing pretty well. I can
Ive got a decent understanding of acoustic guitar now as well , just recently learned artificial harmonics, but i still struggle with singing and maintaining strumming patterns
Andy can you tell me if it’s true that another online guitar tutor says that if you are an older beginner, I’m 59 that you probably won’t be able to learn very well ?
As a relative beginner I've gotten a good way into Doc Watson's version of Deep River Blues. It's done amazing things for my finger coordination, strength and calluses. I've been using 3 fingers on the right hand rather than Doc's use of one finger, I'm doing it that way to help train the other fingers up a bit. That song is a big confidence builder as you move through each section, and it's fun!
I am in exactly the same place. I took 1 lesson back in the early 80s. Other than that looked at chords in a book for 4 decades. Now I watch videos. I am still enjoying immensely every small advancement. If you are having fun keep playing! BEST AND PEACE
I feel like this should be prefaced with "if guitar is your first instrument". If you're coming over from another many of these things you may instinctly know how to do with little to no practice
I would just add to that whole thing that that's all fine and well that someone can play those but the third thing to add in is to sing it and sing it well. I think especially men they run into this issue where they learn these songs and then what do they do with it

After 3 years I still cant barre. So I no this negates me to beginner. Ex mma so my hands/joints are not the best. Very annoying as I know I can be better. I love Arpeggio btw.
It appears I’m an aspiring intermediate! Thanks! I’ll be practicing even more now!
Nice🙏🙏thks for sharing these technics🙏
I'm at the level of "if I was a busker in the street, people would pay me to stop playing". However I'll keep practicing to try and get better.
Love the shirt 😂
I WANT THAT T SHIRT ITS AMAZING
To be an intermediate guitarist you need to do power chords, hammer ons, pull off and slides🎸🎸
I’m an amazing beginner
I played all those songs properly and i also learnt playing guitar from ur channel can u make a tutorial on physcosocial by slipknot pls
WOW
Always consider myself a beginner till I can play through a whole song.
8 years and still only a couple. But I’m not doing it for my dinner so I’m ok with it.
Need a song of “intros” and I’ll be cooking!
When I was 18, Metallica released ‘And justice for all….’ I heard One and immediately rushed out and bought a mega cheap acoustic then badgered my friend (a most excellent guitarist) to teach me how to play it. Of course, it was a disaster. I started playing with a tutor 2 years ago…I’m doing pretty well. I can
Ed O'brien has a guitar channel!!! Awesome, subed
Thanks for this video ! After watching your explanation, I believe I'm actually a true Guitar Legend......
Ive got a decent understanding of acoustic guitar now as well , just recently learned artificial harmonics, but i still struggle with singing and maintaining strumming patterns
Andy can you tell me if it’s true that another online guitar tutor says that if you are an older beginner, I’m 59 that you probably won’t be able to learn very well ?
that applies to everything, its just slower.
Not a beginner song at all. Doc Watson stuff is pretty advanced. Well done.
OK, so after 47 years of playing the guitar I class myself as a beginner. Should I give up now or persevere for another couple of decades?
I am in exactly the same place. I took 1 lesson back in the early 80s. Other than that looked at chords in a book for 4 decades. Now I watch videos. I am still enjoying immensely every small advancement. If you are having fun keep playing! BEST AND PEACE
I feel like this should be prefaced with "if guitar is your first instrument". If you're coming over from another many of these things you may instinctly know how to do with little to no practice
I would just add to that whole thing that that's all fine and well that someone can play those but the third thing to add in is to sing it and sing it well. I think especially men they run into this issue where they learn these songs and then what do they do with it
Great video. Thanks for posting this
Guitar collection video??
Yes
