@Ben Caswell not in this case when distilling from vodka, but generally you're absolutely right! I assume there is no methanol and other stuff in their vodka but when distilling anything else he'd be blind now.
Usually you throw out the heads, (first liquid from distilling process) because it may or may not contain a lethal amount of a different type of alcohol. In this small of portions i dont think it matters
i think it is pretty safe since they didnt use fermented grain or fruit on it, id say they made juniper, lime and lime infused vodka but thats what we call gin🧐
No the heads and tails are something formed in the mash process and during actual distillation of a mash. This is taking vodka which is 40%abv and throwing it into a still and heating. The aromatics are pulled out of the added ingredients of your choice but the actual vapor is as close to pure alcohol as you could want. Most likely up there in the 70-80% due to water of course making its way in via the ice melting and water vapor coming around towards the end of the run. My friend in high school used to collect almost empty bottles of liquor at parties when they were ending and distill it into "jet fuel" with an actual chemistry setup and it'd be like 96% and clear despite being a mix of all kinds of whiskeys, rums, vodka, what have you.
There wouldn't be enough methanol to hurt you even in a 5 gallon still. The danger would be separating methanol into a pure concentration and drinking a large quantity of it. A still doesn't make anything. It simply separates things. So people who freak out out over heads and drink beer make me chuckle. You put beer in the still and separate the methanol and ethanol from it. Since methanol separates at a lower temperature it comes out first. But all these things are present in the beer you drink they're just not in high concentrations. Imagine pouring a can of beer in this pot. Anything you pull out of that beer can't hurt you if you could drink the whole can of beer and not be affected 😂. The danger would be collecting the heads and adding them to more heads and then drinking a bottle of heads. When you get into the 5 gallon still and up, toss out the first little bit just to be safe because there's no since in drinking that crap if you don't have to. Obviously the bigger the still the more beer it can hold which means the more methanol you will separate from it. These huge 500 gallon stills can produce enough to hurt you.
I haven't seen hide nor hair of this channel in months, and just thought of them today out of the blue. I was thinking, man... I can't remember the channel's name, the father or sons name, or anything specific enough to search engine. I figured I'd have to do a "father/son, drink making, shorts, search. I come home, and this immediately pops up. Nice!!
Well brewing is one thing destillation is another. I can tell you that what you talk about is incorrect, you can't create harmful amounts of methanol when distilling regular mash.
Usually when the rig starts to flow, the most concentrated bit is at the beginning of the pour. What you want is right after. Then create a proof mix to taste
on that size still he just had the foreshots, heads, and hearts. not a tonn9f metyanol in that little bottle but still best to let those first bits go to waste
I've definitely been known to use my chemistry glassware to make hard liquor, sometimes with herbal infusions and made some great stuff. Some awful stuff too, but that's not important.
Hope you dumped out the first bit. When making booze youre gonna have some shit in the first little amount that is very toxic. At that small amount probably less but in a mason youre gonna want to make sure you let it run a bit first
We make homemade liquor similar way but we start from scratch using fresh fruit and dry fruits in a barrel with some water then boil it on flame make a little hole in the barrel put a pipe to the barrel then other side to a empty bottle let it fill and enjoy. My grandpa learned it in ww2
I was fixin to say you should cut that down with a little water. You drink a teacup full right off the spout and you’ll be getting a little nap in. Lol
