  • In this video I'll show you how I remove the half Shaft and bearing for the rear axle of the 6.3. The procedure is much the same on the w108. Except the w109 has the rear brake hold down yolk to remove. This contains two halves of a plastic bearing that will need replacing.

    That is some engineering going on that car especially for the time it was built. Thanks again for sharing this glimpse of elite design.

    As far as I know the floating bearing is only on W109 Air suspension cars. The reason is that the movement of the axle is more than the spring modelswhen hanging. Seemed reasonable logic to me.....I have been told also that you can fit a standard W108 bearing.

    Sorry I can not help with the Pinion gear shims but I can tell you I have regular bearings on both the 3.5 and 6.3. Fantastic job!!!

    Hi John, another great video. Thanks for taking the time to do what you do by showing the steps and explaining them. I also appreciate you keeping budget in mind by using regular tools with some smart modifications. My take on the floating bearing is because of the way the suspension is able to travel. I don.t recall if this car was on the ground when you got it out of the forest or if it was on the emergency blocks. As you may know if you have a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension the rear wheels will basically go on a radical negative chamber. I would imagine that the floating feature would allow for a smooth rolling in that kind of situation while preventing damage to the axle or even the diff.

      Thanks for the comments Frank and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. Thing is about the bearing I can't see the purpose of it being like it is, after all the rotation of the half shaft is a fixed position inside the tube, from the bearing to where it slides into the splines.
      Cheers John

    Hi John! From my perspective the only critical point could be to much wear under the white plastic parts on the immersion pipe (?). In 90 percent in this cases one tries to "compensate" that wear with more or less thin metal parts, often perforated Coke or Brake fluid cans, depends on how "deep" the problem is. Often rust occurs due to bad maintanence/lack of fat there triggering wear. You may check whether you are within MB-tolerances there because pipe parts are "Out" and welding new material on it and turning it then is difficult because of the setting/dimensions of the whole part. Used pipes all have that problem.... Regrettably I dont have the measures/tolerances from MB available at the mom but I would strongly recommend to check that. Otherwise you will have problems soon. Amazingly those (super hard) plastic parts seldom show wear......
    All other parts should be available.
    Wish you all the best and thank you for sharing with us what and how you do it.
    Rgds, Oliver

      I'll check into what you said. Tolerances etc. I'll replace those plastic shells, comes in a kit.

    Thank you very much for this video. I found it very instructive. I am trying to restore a W108 and have a question about changing the axle bearing. I have not seen you previous video and perhaps it is explained there. In short, is it true that for the right hand axle (RHdrive car) bearing replacement I need to take out the rear springs and compensating spring plus two buffers in order to reinsert the axle?

    • @mercedesmaintenance.6339
      @mercedesmaintenance.6339  Před 3 lety

      Thanks. Glad you're enjoying the videos. You don't have to remove those items to re insert the axle. Make sure the car is supported on stands keeping the right axle straight and it should go back in no problem. I did my 280se 108 and had no issues. Make sure to replace the inner seal as well as the outer seal on the backing plate. Come join us on Mercedes Maintenance and Mercedes Rescue on Facebook. I started both groups some years ago, lots of knowledge there to help you with your project.

    Very nice video! Small question. when reassembling, how much bearing grease do you need to apply onto the wheel bearings? Replacing this on a w108 280s with fixed wheel bearings

    The axle bearing seems odd for that application, because the shaft only moves in one (rotational) plane. Someone had already made repairs there, so did they install that bearing because they could not find the right one? And the nut was loose, maybe the factory original bearing was slightly wider.
    Check out your local industrial suppliers, bearing shop or tractor suppliers for the strips of felt. Key words, John Deere, International Harvester, Cat, Oliver.

      Thank you. So those felt strips are common in other vehicles?

    • @mohabatkhanmalak1161
      @mohabatkhanmalak1161 Před 3 lety +1

      They were common in older vehicles and tractors before the wide use of plastics. In the US older tractors and machines are still running that use felt seals, so they should have them. And in industry too the felt seals are used widely. But, sizing of width and depth is important for the parts to fit properly. @@mercedesmaintenance.6339

    I have problem with clunking in reverse only on my 109 which can be compensated by reversing while riding the break pedal. I had a mechanic fit thin metal strips around the floating bearing plastic pieces however without success so what else could it be & how does the geese travel around the metal strips to adequately lubricate the joint?
    I assume what has happened is the metal bearing casing has worn & replacing the plastic pieces didnt solve it. Can these metal casings be bought or is there another way to tighten the slop?

      I'm assuming you're talking about the anti dive arms on the rear. Have you checked the connection where the arm connects to the body? There is a rubber bushing there. The grease travels on those plastic shells by means of grooves crisscrossed into them. When I took mine apart someone had tried to shim it too. i will be replacing the shells. Here they are.
