Same. Grew up in a community where fair skin is the beauty standard and my sister and cousins are fair with light eyes so everyone adored them people called me ugly , jeered at me , asked me why I’m not pretty like them .
When I left the community I would get so many compliments , at 30 people still ask if I’m a model and they are always perplexed that I don’t see myself as beautiful.
Anyway sometimes growing up ugly is better so you don’t become full of it but it was very traumatic the way people treated me. And also I was a bit ugly not just dark then I blossomed and the same people who wouldn’t validate me, did eventually and I was like ew , I don’t actually need it.
My parents did it to me too in a sense not ok and not endearing .

Very common to hear from grandmamas and mothers “es bonita, es güerita” which means “she’s pretty, she’s fair” to describe another woman or child in the circle
In the family circles if you have a pale skinned baby it’s considered a bless and everyone would describe it as beautiful
Also there’s a believe “mejorar la raza” which literally means “betterment of the race” it’s referred to marry a person with Caucasian/European features and have a child with those characteristics

Some of the most beautiful women in the world are tanned and dark skinned, yet people go through life believing they're the "ugly dark one". Really sad.

I know exactly what you’re saying. Trying to “stay pretty” is futile and exhausting but being intelligent lasts forever and takes you so much further and people love sincere people who don’t take themselves too seriously for thugs that fade with time. I always knew my mind was my ticket upward, I also grew up believing I was ugly. My true beauty is I am real and genuine. I get the pain in others and work as an empath to help them see what is truly beautiful/strong/the assets about them that can never be taken away. Being “just pretty” when that is all you are is NEVER ENOUGH. Grab the other end of the sofa and lift when you’re pretty and you now have a skill.

Weirdly enough as a white Irish woman, those of us who are very pale hated our skin colour. My mother was Irish too but had black hair and olive skin and we all wanted to tan like her and have her colouring. I'd hate my freckles and she'd say she wished she had freckles. It's pretty much still the same attitude today. If you come home from a sun holiday with a tan it's like a badge of honour, you're complimented and told you look so healthy and pretty. People immediately assumed it would be ok to give her nicknames that brought attention to her skin color. I nipped that in the bud right away. I do not allow anyone to treat her differently from her cousins. I advocate for her and do not let anyone call her anything other than her name and a child of God. @bamboobabby4572 bc id say she is a medium complexion herself, and if she has a white/light skinned husband and/or another light-skinned child already, it can be surprising bc its fairly unlikely that a baby w 2 lighter parents will be darker than both. Same w the opposite(2 blue eyed-blondes having a baby w dark hair and skin- its not impossible, just unlikely). My brother and 1 sister look like they're from completely different families bc he is tall and has curly black hair, extremely dark skin and light blue eyes where my sister is so light she can't even tan(shes honestly "pink" and got zero olive), has blonde, straight hair, dark brown eyes and is short. Despite her speaking spanish, nobody believes that she is anything other than white and nobody ever knows what my brother is, other than "definitely not white" lol people are so confused when they meet the opposite sibling and just immediately assume they're not even half siblings(must be step) but they actually have the same 2 parents as the rest of us more "medium" kids lol our mom is still obsessed w avoiding the sun at all costs and one time she put on full arm gloves to walk to the car(75 ft) and I had to sit her down and show her studies about the consequences of light deprivation/d deficiencies...from asthma to diabetes to osteoporosis to hormone imbalance, she already has every condition that's associated w vit d deficiency🤦‍♀️ I finally convinced her to not wear the gloves but you can still see the fear in her eyes if you even talk about going outside on a sunny day lol🥴🫠

It wasn't until I looked back at my childhood photos and realized that I wasn't fat at all! Sure, I wasn't super skinny like the other kids but I was not even overweight. I was at a healthy weight and it didn't help that I was taller than kids my age. All my life I thought I was fat and accepted it as that. It fucked with my self-esteem and I always stayed quiet and kept to myself at school because I was afraid to get bullied for being fat, which I totally was not. I even got a few of boys liking me and I flat out rejected and unfriended them because I thought they were just joking because how can anyone like a fat girl like me. I am Peruvian and I can relate heavily to this. I have a younger sister (3-years apart). I always looked like my father he has dark hair, brown eyes, and darker skin than my mom who is “guera” my mother is white with hazel green eyes and chestnut brown hair. I remember when my sister was born, my father’s behavior towards me changed drastically. He always favored and babied her while always scolded and made comments about my appearance. I remember back at church someone said to my mom “Your daughter is so beautiful” my mom being the angel that she is though that the comment was about me her eldest. The person immediately said “ew no I meant the little gringita” meaning my younger sister. My mother left in a rage that day and my eyes never left the floor that day. Funny how in this day and age everyone tans their skin and colors their hair to look like me 😂

my mom used to tell me that she wished i had blonde hair and blue eyes like my brother. she would also put sun-in lightener in my hair, starting when i was only like 3-4 years old. it definitely made me feel self conscious from a really young age.

I’ve always been big, my mum even took me to dietitians when I was four because she was so slender and the only time in her life she ever gained weight was when she was pregnant and she would promptly lose it all after having me and my brothers. It was always a “fun” time whenever it came to eating because my brothers all inherited her fast metabolism whereas I didn’t so she always restricted everything I ate and even when we went out to eat she would say that I’d eaten enough and never say it to anyone else who would pile their plates high at the buffet or if it was ordering food she would order for me. I love her but I would have to say that it’s made me have a very warped relationship with food. My father used to humiliate me the same way. In his opinion, I wasn't intelligent like my cousin and neither beautiful. He called me "idiot" and other pejorative terms, but actually, I never cared. I had no mother as she died in my birth. I spent more than 10 years with him, dealing with his bad behaviour and his mental and physical abuse towards me. He used to spank me for any reason or because my grades in school weren't what he expected. I lived under constant fear of him. He got involved with a very evil woman when I was 9 and was always with her. She had a daughter to whom he did everything but that girl wasn't his but from another man,who impegrenated that woman and abandoned her. Well... when I was 21 I left that house and I never came back. I was in college and now I could find a job, be free and live away from that family. He died in 2017. Leaving behind many bastard kids he never cared for. For that bi* he left the house and everything. I live in Germany now, married and I have no kids. I think God spared me the burden of having kids who could one day be left behind and suffer in thus planet like I did. Imagine if I die and leave my kids in the hands of my husband? What guarantee he wouldn't treat them badly or marry again a bad woman who would torture my children?! One day, one of my aunts told me this: "your father is envious. He can't accept you have nothing of him, he is stupid, not intelligent and he knows you are like my uncle who was bright and smart like you. You are what your father could never be! You are like the uncle he admired but couldn't be a copy of... yes! It is true. He is envious of you!". But I also noticed he liked more that woman's child because the girl had lighter skin and was beautiful. I wasn't beautiful enough. I was the ugly duckling. He was ashamed to introduce me to others as his daughter unless I become a great lawyer or judge or a very important and wealthy person. I was never like that so he despised me for that. When he died, I felt nothing. I didn't miss him, I didn't suffer. It was like a total stranger died. It was a weird situation. On the other hand, when my best friend died I suffered as if I had lost a father because all my life he was a true father to me in so many ways. He was 64 when he died of leukemia, and right now, I cry remembering him. He was the father Il never had at home. 😢

She’s always had such a shy personality and has always hidden herself. On social media, she always uses silly filters because she won’t show her face very much and rarely posts photos of herself. She thinks she’s ugly and the times that we’ve told her how pretty she is or that she has big beautiful eyes, she gets emotional and cries. She probably thinks we’re all lying to her because she doesn’t have the Kylie Jenner “Instagram face” and that’s all a lot of girls her age want. I always thought the same, people were just being nice, possibly trying to get something out of me. I had a big trust issues growing up because I didn't grow up in an emotionally safe environment. I hope she finds peace within and embrace her natural beauty. Also know that the appearance doesn't define person's value, and that intelligence, sense of humor, charms, kindness, creativity, uniqueness, thoughtfulness, generosity, and all the other different factors are also how you attract people💝✨️.
