I personally don't need an engineer and choose to work with a select few to keep working relationships open.

I gotta agree with Zay here. When an artists hits me up with a little bit of money, no matter how little, it sends the message that s/he is willing to invest in themselves, they are serious about their craft (because people spend their money on what they value) and they also have respect for my talent as a producer. As a result I'm much more open to even giving out free beats and services...normally. It's important to have respect for all your peers in this game; your fellow artists, producers, engineers (recording, mixing, and mastering), video directors, etc. Music is not an easy or cheap business to be in, but common courtesy will help you get far.

Fruity Loops was first released at the end of 1997. Producers were making beats on Amiga and other computers well before 1997. One that still uses Amiga to this day is Paradox (aka Alaska)
