I think this is my favorite scene from this series (Tamerlane’s/Verna’s last scene, Pym’s/Verna’s scene, and Lenore’s/Verna’s last scene are right up there). This monologue was beautifully written, and Katie Parker and Bruce Greenwood nailed the scene (Greenwood’s recitation of “Annabel Lee is *chef’s kiss*). It breaks your heart for both characters, even though the older Roderick is a highly unsympathetic character. That speaks to the quality of the writing and the acting.
My first impression of The Fall of the House of Usher was that it was yet another amazing piece of work by Flanagan, but maybe not quite to the same level as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. But upon rewatch, I think it really is right there with those other two. They comprise 1A, 1B, and 1C, and which one is A, B, or C could depend on my mood any given day. 😂 Flanagan clearly drew inspiration from a lot of sources here - most notably Poe, but also clearly from the real life Sackler family, and arguably from Succession, among other sources. But it’s *HOW* Flanagan so artfully wove various elements from those pieces of inspiration together to tell a modern, relevant tale/social commentary - brought to life by great cinematography and beautiful acting - that makes it great. This show truly is an ode to everything Edgar Allen Poe (the brilliance of his work, his tragic life struggles).

My favourite scene in the whole series. The acting (both of them) is absolutely amazing and the music so beautifully emphasizes the tragedy. When roderick said lenore had his fire and her grandmas compass and doesn't have her grandmas "broken heart", I knew annabelle took her life but I denied it. Thought she died with a broken heart. Knew it, dont wanna admit it. Then episode 8's The Raven, showing how roderick went downhill without annabelle. And the repercussions of the decision he and his sister made. It started with annabelle's loss then mid part was lenore and the conclusion was roderick's confession and the end of the siblings. Hope there's a sequel, showing how roderick took his kids away from their moms, focusing or giving more time for the ruthless young siblings part and their rise. But knowing mike it's unlikely 😂😂😂

Even more sad than how Roderick ruined their relationship is what it did to their two children. One became addicted to drugs and a jealous obsessive monster. One became so terrified of what people saw when they looked at her that she couldn’t be emotionally vulnerable enough to let anyone in. They became selfish and cruel and uncaring and heartless. I can’t imagine Annabel Lee’s pain in watching it happen and being unable to stop it
