      If you Google past history of barbie, in the past when she just had One type of doll and more limited jobs she was seen as a ‘bad role model for young girls’ because she was so Looks focused and “ promoted an unhealthy body standard” this is more around the time when like the woman’s movement was really going because Barbie came out in 1959 just one year before the 1960 when the womens movement happened….My grandma didnt like the idea of me having barbies as a kid but still let me play with me and bought them for me but she would also give me long talks about how all Women have different bodies and not all of them will or should have to look like Barbie

    • @LaBellesGrace
      @LaBellesGrace Před 3 lety +121

      @@Myrathosghost I have to respectfully disagree. Prepare yourself, it’s gonna be a long one ahah
      There’s no denying that Barbie has had her shady and questionable moments but I do personally believe that it’s the unfortunate thing to happen to most, if not all brands, that continuously exists for over a decade - much less a brand that has managed to stand the test of time for six decades like Barbie has. I grew up completely *obsessed* with Barbie at two and a half years old and not once did I ever consider Barbie as a toxic role model in any way at all - her appearance or otherwise. I didn’t have consistent friends as a kid and always jumped from different people trying to find some sort of validation and at home only older brothers and busy parents so I looked up to the Barbie imagine as an older sister/young aunty to admire and look up to so I am admittedly biased about this topic regardless.
      However, over the last sixty years Barbie as a brand has grown to become inclusive and diverse. There’s a reason why Barbie hasn’t died out like other toy lines - I’ll recommend Negative Legends video on What Happened to Barbie since he explains it so much better than I could in text. As for the controversy about people trying to look like the doll I can say with full confidence that “The Barbie look” people either hype up or downcast upon actually *isn’t* a look Barbie herself has ever attempted at all. Society *thinks* that’s what Barbie looks like when in reality they probably never looked into the toy stores since they were little kids so it’s much easier to go by whatever others say.
      Lastly, I’ll have to again disagree about the argument about Barbie’s imagine being unrealistic and harmful - Barbie is complete fiction and made of plastic so it makes more sense for the company to come up with an in between of cartoon-like and unique subtly of looking close to real women - especially in comparison to other doll lines that have existed such as Bratz, Monster High and LOL Surprise. Barbie isn’t actually real so I never had a problem thinking I ever had to look like her.
      Yes there has been small hiccups in the past - however having either ignorant workers for the brand or what was considered popular at the time has a part to play. Barbie to me has always held up the picture of being kind and yourself while able to be whatever and whomever you want to be regardless of what anyone else thinks - hence their motto “you can be anything” and Barbie having qualifications in ever single career known to human-kind being the joke of the brand lol. It’s about the meaning that counts.
      But that’s also just how I feel and have always interpreted it in the past 18 years.

    • @oanayu
      @oanayu Před 3 lety +98

      @@Myrathosghost Someone should have told your grandma that kids only care about playing. What kind of 6 year old looks at Barbie and goes "I wanna look like her"? Unless, of course, they were raised in a toxic environment, in which case it's the family's fault and not the brand's.

    • @LaBellesGrace
      @LaBellesGrace Před 3 lety +29

      @@oanayu definitely agree with you! It’s no difference than a young child comparing themselves to a cartoon Disney Princess or curvy characters from 90s cartoon shows (Powerpuff Girls’ Miss Bellum and Dexters Laboratory’s mum and Jessica Rabbit?). They are not real and don’t reflect the actual human body whatsoever and everyone knows there is no point to compare, so the same thing needs to also go to Barbie. As you said, unless something toxic is happening behind the scenes, kids will not care how Barbie looks and only care about the stories they can come up with by using their imagination.

      They covered that in the second movie
      if I remember correctly🤔
      But "SPOILER ALERT" I guess?😆😅😉
      .
      .
      .
      Her mom (the queen Calissa or what's her name) told Barbie (aka Merlia) that she was able to turn from mermaid to human as well (thanks to that strong royal mermaid magic of hers) So she was able to turn human and on the land she met Merlias' father (it's told that leter in their relationship he died in an accident of some sort ¿before? Merlia was born I think...🤔I am not 100% sure about this but oh well😅)
      - then the story line goes with the part when she was forced to gave their daughter to Merlias' human grandpa when Oceania was too dangerous for the little princess (as the first movie explains somewher in the beginning of it)
      - And there we are back with the flashback/explanation from the second movie where queen Calissa tells her daughter she lost the ability to turn human after her coronation (whitch is this kind of cool ritual with few special shells, mermaid ambassadress and magical throne of some sort) hence, she had to stay in Oceania as a full-time mermaid ruler leaving her beloved human part of the new queens' family on the land. And that it is possible that when Merlia sits upon the magical throne in her mothers' place it will take her human legs as well...
      And so goes the continuation of the second movie...
      .
      .
      .
      For those who want to know the ending:
      the fight between bad guys and good guys happens, as always Barbie wins so Merlia is now the new queen of Oceania that can control the power of ocean or whatever but she loses her human legs in the process... but not for long, as Merlia wishes to have them back so she has (because it is a Barbie movie and Barbie movies don't have sad endings I guess...)

    Barbie: The Island Princess:
    The music is honestly really good for the two main characters, them being Ro and the prince. Though the plot is very cliché, and the animal sidekicks are hit or miss
    Princess & the Pauper: People always say it's the best one in the series, hands down. I've only seen it once, but I've seriously been searching for it for years.
    Barbie & Pegasus: Honestly a really interesting story. Barbie has a very sassy personality, and the two don't just fall in love at first sight. The animal sidekicks is adorable as well. :)

    It’s a game franchise by Level 5, with the first game featuring animation by Studio Ghibli!

    "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale" also has a sequel. Maybe you'd like to watch that one too. It wasn't as good as the first movie, though 🤷🏻‍♀️
    But if you enjoyed this movie, I'm sure you'd like the "Barbie - Fairytopia" series too. The series consists of 3 movies the first one being "Fairytopia", starring Elina (Barbie) a fairy without any wings who has to save the fairy kingdom from a mysterious disease that makes all other fairies lose their ability to fly, the second movie is called "Mermaidia", where Elina has to transform into a mermaid to save Mermaidia, the mermaid kingdom of Fairytopia and the last movie is called "Fairytopia - the Magic of Rainbow", where Elina is chosen to become the student of one of the guardian fairies and learn a special peace keeping dance at a school, together with the other guardian students. I think it would be very cool if you'd make a video reviewing those. Those movies are from the early 2000's, but I still think they're among the better Barbie movies and I really enjoyed them when I was a kid ^^

But there's one thing in which I have to agree with Commom Sense Media (I hate to say this xD): Everyone in this movie is into fashion and stuff! It's okay if characters like fashion, but when it's every girl in a story, that's kinda problematic, because it says "Every girl is into that! Oh, you're not? Then something must be wrong with you."
