Honestly, yeah - though I'd honestly like a story where the lamp/object is kind of their apartment - *yet they're still mad* because it's like, "Dude. YOU WOKE ME UP TO WISH FOR A CHIMP?!"
That, and the reason they're in the lamp in the first place, more often then not, is BECAUSE they were an asshole, and the lamp is their punishment for the abuse of their powers.
This was easily my favourite movie out of Monster High regardless. Howleen is such a relatable underdog that despite her arguements with Clawdeen you can still sympathise with her about being unpopular.
Yes and No. It's always weird how people are obsessed with popularity. Having a handful of good friends is more than enough the way I see it. But then again I think Howleen's problem is specific to that she has a popular sister who she DOES look up to but also wants to upstage.

The main thing that I think disappoints me about 13 Wishes is that a Whisp doll wasn’t included with the film line. They just made it a Comic-Con exclusive with another villain character. In terms of monster high movies, my favorites would have to be Scaris and Haunted.
As an Arab, this movie was the funniest to sit through ever. I love(and hate) when doll lines do genie/Arabian nights inspired films, there always so horrendous 💀 anyway I’d like to clear up a few things here x) 2:03 mehhh, its not exactly racist. the genies the west have latched onto in particular are inherently evil by the way they get stuck in lamps (or any other container) is because they were punished either by god or by the genie king. Genies (or more accurately, jinnis) are actually an entirely complex mythological creature. The best way I can describe it is that they’re spirits. They’re good, bad, can be religious, have their own cities and countries and entire world that we cannot see or feel. There are different types of jinnis, (for example, an ifrit is akin to abrahamic style demons, they fester in dirty places and such, and they’re the kinds you “make a deal with the devil” with.) Genies in lamps don’t actually grant wishes, contrary to popular belief. That was made up by western readers. They try to make deals so that they can escape containment, trying to fool you unless you fool them first. (I recommend the genie and the fisherman story to understand what I mean exactly.)
Honestly I’ve been writing a story with two jinns too and as an ex Muslim, I think it’s kind of weird how far off the “genie” is from the jinn. They’re such fascinating creatures, but the “genies” are such a boring version of them honestly.
My first wish would be bring back Ever After High so we can finally have the Lost Movie come a reality. I'll never be able to forgive Disney as long as the drafts are available on CZcams :')
My second wish would be to give the later part of EAH a better plot because I'm not gonna lie to you, they sort of lost direction once they eliminated the central "Royal vs Rebel" conflict around 2016.
my third wish would be to give EAH a better ending because that whole winter princess thingy (I forgot her name) did not tie with any other plot and it also had zero spice and was mediocre in general
A very interesting look into 13 Wishes. As a continuation to Howleen’s starting arc from the second special, Fright On, this movie tackles her conflict with finding herself. As a 14 to 15 year old girl, Howleen tends to have a hard time figuring out her own identity outside of being the little sister to Clawd and Clawdeen. In this movie we get to see her not only finally have a friend but also see a continuation as to her conflict with Gory and her vampire crew. As an old fashion vampire, Gory herself has only started tolerating other monster races, and in particular seems to have a problem with Howleen specifically. Whether it’s just being a mean girl or internalized racism is really up for debate. This movie on its own is not one who’s message is that deep but I do love the subtle details in the wishes. Cleo herself is a great parallel to Howleen. Both are younger sisters who’ve been put in the shadows of their older sisters. It’s why when Deuce remembers Nefera we see Cleo show some resentment. While yes she is popular in school, Cleo’s popularity is built upon the legacy her sister had left behind. And while yes Cleo is a diva, she is also aware of what being casted aside can feel like. She just doesn’t let it hold her down because as a deNile she has to be on top. It’s her destiny. And I will say while the wishes for the most part aren’t interesting, it does pain me to know that we continue to see the prejudice Gil’s parents hold towards Lagoona. The only way for her to be accepted by her boyfriend’s parents is to become a completely different race. Because it’s easier to change herself than it is to change Gil’s parents minds. It’s things like this that make me appreciate the monster high writing. Overall a very fun recap of a fun movie. I’ll admit most of the appeal for this movie really relies on one being able to empathize with Howleen and understanding where her character comes from. All in all, good take.
What they should have done was have Whisp's lantern ending up in the world of Ever After High. Like Cupid, Whisp can go to school there and learn how to be a future genie!
I actually have another idea! Based off of your pitch, what if Whisp’s lantern ended up in Ever After High where she would be part of the Arabian Nights story! That way, it would still follow the fairytale concept!
I think if I were to encounter a wish-granter, I'd want to first make sure that they won't twist my wishes into things that I wasn't really wishing for. I've seen and heard that trope so much that I want to ensure that there's no loopholes or misunderstandings. And probably would wish for world peace, equality, no diseases, etc. Then again, that kinda sounds like I want to initiate The Rapture, and I don't really wanna do that. Also, the ability to freely undo wishes without taking away from my count. I want to be as practical and considerate as possible, even though selfishness is extremely tempting.
Wow, you put a lot of thought into your wishes. My mind immediately went to "give me all the Monster High dolls in mint condition, add a room to my house for displaying all of my dolls, give me and my family a ton of money so we're set for life, make my bff's house bigger, and give her family money to be set for life." My wishes would definitely be on the selfish side. I just want my parents to be able to live comfortably since they'll be working past 60 years old. My mom has a lot of back problems so I'd probably also wish for her back to be healed or something. I guess most of the wishes I thought of aren't actually that selfish, but at the same time I'm not thinking about the bigger picture where you could make big positive changes for the world.

13 Wishes was and still is one of my all time favorite Monster High films from when i was younger, and i kinda sympathized with Whisp sure she did bad things but all she ever really wanted was to be real instead of a literal shadow she just went about it the wrong way.

I'm Arab and it was so nice to see a monster come from an Arab background! I wish we got to see more of Gigi and Whisp though. Those two had some of the most interesting backstories of any MH character and we didn't get to see enough of them! I love how unique their designs are and honestly their aesthetic has always been so mysterious and enchanting to me.
What bothers me the most is that they made the genie bottle fall into Monster High’s bottomless pool implying that even if now Whisp is a genie she will never get to have someone to grant a wish to because her bottle won’t ever be found, at least not anytime soon, and it was totally unnecessary the bottle was about to launch itself far away from Monster High and the characters were already never going to see it again, there was no need to crush Whisp’s dreams
One Disney made up the “3 wishes” the original Aladdin had unlimited wishes. Two there are several instances to prove that Ever after high and monster high are connected in some form or another, in the shows/ movies them selfs
I totally understand the whole sibling thing. Even now many years later I am still known as "little sister" to my brother. It came handy at times which I am thankful for but goodness it can get annoying too.
This movie was technically the first introduction to Ever After High, since it introduced Jiles Grimm, and also featured several EAH easter eggs, like the Mad Hatter hat, poisoned apple and magic mirror in the attic.
My only wish is to send a message to my younger self, telling myself to stand up against her bullies, tell Dad about it, and when the parent teacher conference happens tell the bullies' parents about their sons' bullying.
Thirteen wishes? I'd write a whole list on paper in extreme detail to prevent any monkeypaw mishaps and say "I wish for this list of wishes to be granted" and that would technically only use my first wish. Then I'd have enough wishes left over just in case the list still had unforseen outcomes.

i was always surprised to here 13 Wishes was a top favorite for everyone. Yes the outfits were gorgeous, but I never saw anything special in it. I suggest reviewing Boo York next, that one's actually top tier.
Despite its lucid use of the classic cartoon genie tropes and stereotypes associated with the cultural phenomenom of "be careful what you wish for", I believe this movie utilizes it to its own benefit, as the writers created a decent setting and with relatable characters, including a rich lore associated with the new characters, and especially the new villain, presented. Everything is evenly fleshed out to not just be the classic "find a magic genie" storyline, and to instead appeal to a deeper meaning. Which is what I believe made it one of the most sold movie products the entire Monster High brand had to offer. (And also, there's a video game concerning this movie ... However it is quite off-balance to the plot.)
I know the feeling I’m the youngest of 4 and I came in to high school after my brother and sister and everyone knew and compared me to them so I was stuck in their shadow for years and sometimes even now
My sib is 5 years older than me. That's fine, except my art teacher expected me to be as creative artwise as she was, and my english/speech teacher for the upper levels (before she left and I got a new teacher) watched me like a hawk to try and get me in trouble. I couldn't come up with a lot of creative ideas in art, but when I had an idea I seemed to do it well. We had to make "animal jars" ie cookie jars for a project out of clay and I made a canopic jar. The teacher showed it off to other classes but gave me a b "because someone somewhere won't like it" and I realized he compared me to my sib and I came up short. For the english/speech teacher, by the time I had her speech class, you have to write a transcript of the speech you'd give and recite it word for word in the correct amount of time. It was hard to get through, especially the 10 min speech. I apparently was *too* like my sibling in that class. We had a 2 person speech where we had to stand back to back and recite something of our choosing where we couldn't overlap our speaking, so my partner and I tapped our legs audibly when we were two words from the end of the sentence and the other person could start in. We also had to do a 6 min speech on a song and I chose a song in German so i could translate the song and explain puns and things for the first 4 or 5 mins before giving a very brief "this is why this song is important". So what I'm saying is, you're not the same as your sibs, but you might be more like them than you realize, too.
9:31 I know that this miror scene it’s like the most obivous thing but still doesn’t make it bad. In my opinion it really shows that sometimes you just need to look in the mirror look at yourself to remenber who you are because I don’t know sometimes you are just lost because you made up reasons that aren’t even there you fears that are just in your head and shadows that are just in your mind and in the end off the day you just have lost yourself and you can welcome yourself back again, I love that scene alot

I love the opening sequence for some reason, the bit with the guy collecting things and stuff. This movie does expand ( a tiny bit) on the lore of monster high which is nice.

Negative, the rules are that she can't tell the finder or influence the finder in terms of wishes. Whisp (aka shadow genie) is immune to those rules. And since Frankie, Twyla, and Ghoulia aren't the Finder, then Gigi can tell THEM what's going on. So they aren't stretching the rules for plot convenience. Gigi simply forgot that since the others aren't the Finder, she can tell them what's going on.

I have the haunted Rochelle doll and it my favorite version of her.
A very interesting look into 13 Wishes. As a continuation to Howleen’s starting arc from the second special, Fright On, this movie tackles her conflict with finding herself. As a 14 to 15 year old girl, Howleen tends to have a hard time figuring out her own identity outside of being the little sister to Clawd and Clawdeen. In this movie we get to see her not only finally have a friend but also see a continuation as to her conflict with Gory and her vampire crew.
As an old fashion vampire, Gory herself has only started tolerating other monster races, and in particular seems to have a problem with Howleen specifically. Whether it’s just being a mean girl or internalized racism is really up for debate.
This movie on its own is not one who’s message is that deep but I do love the subtle details in the wishes. Cleo herself is a great parallel to Howleen. Both are younger sisters who’ve been put in the shadows of their older sisters. It’s why when Deuce remembers Nefera we see Cleo show some resentment. While yes she is popular in school, Cleo’s popularity is built upon the legacy her sister had left behind. And while yes Cleo is a diva, she is also aware of what being casted aside can feel like. She just doesn’t let it hold her down because as a deNile she has to be on top. It’s her destiny.
And I will say while the wishes for the most part aren’t interesting, it does pain me to know that we continue to see the prejudice Gil’s parents hold towards Lagoona. The only way for her to be accepted by her boyfriend’s parents is to become a completely different race. Because it’s easier to change herself than it is to change Gil’s parents minds. It’s things like this that make me appreciate the monster high writing.
Overall a very fun recap of a fun movie. I’ll admit most of the appeal for this movie really relies on one being able to empathize with Howleen and understanding where her character comes from. All in all, good take.

What they should have done was have Whisp's lantern ending up in the world of Ever After High. Like Cupid, Whisp can go to school there and learn how to be a future genie!

I think if I were to encounter a wish-granter, I'd want to first make sure that they won't twist my wishes into things that I wasn't really wishing for. I've seen and heard that trope so much that I want to ensure that there's no loopholes or misunderstandings. And probably would wish for world peace, equality, no diseases, etc. Then again, that kinda sounds like I want to initiate The Rapture, and I don't really wanna do that. Also, the ability to freely undo wishes without taking away from my count. I want to be as practical and considerate as possible, even though selfishness is extremely tempting.
But that would be granting them the ability to read your mind. You really want to give a wish-granted free reign to poke about in ya head?
Wow, you put a lot of thought into your wishes. My mind immediately went to "give me all the Monster High dolls in mint condition, add a room to my house for displaying all of my dolls, give me and my family a ton of money so we're set for life, make my bff's house bigger, and give her family money to be set for life." My wishes would definitely be on the selfish side. I just want my parents to be able to live comfortably since they'll be working past 60 years old. My mom has a lot of back problems so I'd probably also wish for her back to be healed or something.
I guess most of the wishes I thought of aren't actually that selfish, but at the same time I'm not thinking about the bigger picture where you could make big positive changes for the world.

13 Wishes was and still is one of my all time favorite Monster High films from when i was younger, and i kinda sympathized with Whisp sure she did bad things but all she ever really wanted was to be real instead of a literal shadow she just went about it the wrong way.

I'm Arab and it was so nice to see a monster come from an Arab background! I wish we got to see more of Gigi and Whisp though. Those two had some of the most interesting backstories of any MH character and we didn't get to see enough of them! I love how unique their designs are and honestly their aesthetic has always been so mysterious and enchanting to me.
7:48 The sequence where we learn about Shadow Gigi's past gave me Sonic and the Secret Rings cutscene vibes and I am here for it.
Clawdeen almost being named Howleen is such older (but not necessarily eldest) sibling energy. I almost had my younger sister's name as well!

What bothers me the most is that they made the genie bottle fall into Monster High’s bottomless pool implying that even if now Whisp is a genie she will never get to have someone to grant a wish to because her bottle won’t ever be found, at least not anytime soon, and it was totally unnecessary the bottle was about to launch itself far away from Monster High and the characters were already never going to see it again, there was no need to crush Whisp’s dreams

One Disney made up the “3 wishes” the original Aladdin had unlimited wishes.
Two there are several instances to prove that Ever after high and monster high are connected in some form or another, in the shows/ movies them selfs

13 wishes is literally so many wishes, it would probably take me till the end of my life to use them all.
I totally understand the whole sibling thing. Even now many years later I am still known as "little sister" to my brother. It came handy at times which I am thankful for but goodness it can get annoying too.
This movie was technically the first introduction to Ever After High, since it introduced Jiles Grimm, and also featured several EAH easter eggs, like the Mad Hatter hat, poisoned apple and magic mirror in the attic.
My only wish is to send a message to my younger self, telling myself to stand up against her bullies, tell Dad about it, and when the parent teacher conference happens tell the bullies' parents about their sons' bullying.

Haunted is way better than 13 wishes. I would recommend watching it, it has a good story and explores the ghost world
13 wishes and haunted were always my favorites, so i rewatched them and i loved 13 wishes but i didnt like haunted that much
Thirteen wishes? I'd write a whole list on paper in extreme detail to prevent any monkeypaw mishaps and say "I wish for this list of wishes to be granted" and that would technically only use my first wish. Then I'd have enough wishes left over just in case the list still had unforseen outcomes.

I would watch 13 Wishes, Why do Ghouls fall in love?, Haunted and Boo York on repeat. My parents are traumatized, and need therapy.
Despite its lucid use of the classic cartoon genie tropes and stereotypes associated with the cultural phenomenom of "be careful what you wish for", I believe this movie utilizes it to its own benefit, as the writers created a decent setting and with relatable characters, including a rich lore associated with the new characters, and especially the new villain, presented. Everything is evenly fleshed out to not just be the classic "find a magic genie" storyline, and to instead appeal to a deeper meaning. Which is what I believe made it one of the most sold movie products the entire Monster High brand had to offer.
(And also, there's a video game concerning this movie ... However it is quite off-balance to the plot.)

I know the feeling I’m the youngest of 4 and I came in to high school after my brother and sister and everyone knew and compared me to them so I was stuck in their shadow for years and sometimes even now
My sib is 5 years older than me. That's fine, except my art teacher expected me to be as creative artwise as she was, and my english/speech teacher for the upper levels (before she left and I got a new teacher) watched me like a hawk to try and get me in trouble.
I couldn't come up with a lot of creative ideas in art, but when I had an idea I seemed to do it well. We had to make "animal jars" ie cookie jars for a project out of clay and I made a canopic jar. The teacher showed it off to other classes but gave me a b "because someone somewhere won't like it" and I realized he compared me to my sib and I came up short.
For the english/speech teacher, by the time I had her speech class, you have to write a transcript of the speech you'd give and recite it word for word in the correct amount of time. It was hard to get through, especially the 10 min speech. I apparently was *too* like my sibling in that class. We had a 2 person speech where we had to stand back to back and recite something of our choosing where we couldn't overlap our speaking, so my partner and I tapped our legs audibly when we were two words from the end of the sentence and the other person could start in. We also had to do a 6 min speech on a song and I chose a song in German so i could translate the song and explain puns and things for the first 4 or 5 mins before giving a very brief "this is why this song is important".
So what I'm saying is, you're not the same as your sibs, but you might be more like them than you realize, too.
9:31 I know that this miror scene it’s like the most obivous thing but still doesn’t make it bad. In my opinion it really shows that sometimes you just need to look in the mirror look at yourself to remenber who you are because I don’t know sometimes you are just lost because you made up reasons that aren’t even there you fears that are just in your head and shadows that are just in your mind and in the end off the day you just have lost yourself and you can welcome yourself back again, I love that scene alot

I love the opening sequence for some reason, the bit with the guy collecting things and stuff. This movie does expand ( a tiny bit) on the lore of monster high which is nice.
I would wish for infinite wishes, and if the genie said I can’t do that, I would wish that I could wish for infinite wishes

If I had a nickel for every peice of media I watched where there are 2 moon and sun associated sisters where the moon sister feels undervalued and eventually turns evil and gets a cool colored new design I'd have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened thrice.

I'm so glad you did this video, 13 Wishes is my favorite out of all the Monster High movies, Frights Camera Action being my second, and Freaky Fusion being the third in the top 3 for me, mostly for lore on Frankie's past, but if I had to pick one to be a childhood favorite, it would be GoulsRule, because that's when I was first introduce to the movies at a young age, didn't even know that the episodes were a thing till a few years ago, I always used to think they were little animated shorts that Mattel would put into the DVD

Negative, the rules are that she can't tell the finder or influence the finder in terms of wishes.
Whisp (aka shadow genie) is immune to those rules.
And since Frankie, Twyla, and Ghoulia aren't the Finder, then Gigi can tell THEM what's going on.
So they aren't stretching the rules for plot convenience. Gigi simply forgot that since the others aren't the Finder, she can tell them what's going on.
Fun fact: This was the movie that actually make me a fan of monster high and get the dolls and other stuff
