This and Bad Moon have the best designs hands down. Dog Soldiers is close behind. I need to watch Silver Bullet. As long as werewolves DONT look like Twilight, or American "werewolf" in London, then they're on the right track.

But the one from American Werewolf from In London is terrifying, just because its not bi-pedal doesnt mean it's not a kickass design...that things looks like a demon from hell and i love it, but i do prefer bi-pedal werewolves like the ones in this movie,

@@packking287There's really no such thing as a true werewolf.
In some legends there are people, as you said, who can transform at will but then there's the classic forced to transform during the full moon. Hell, in some mythologies there are people who can transform at will but then when the full moon comes around they are forced to transform.
In different mythologies, werewolf forms can go from people who turn into straight up wolves, people who turn into giant wolves, people who have wolf heads or even the wolf human hybrid.
Mythology about men turning into wolves is as old (or older) than civilization and comes from many different cultures throughout the ages.
The wolf human hybrid form isn't something that Hollywood created but is what Hollywood made popular (and one would say the standard of werewolves)

This is the way werewolves should look and how they act and their size is just perfect, I don’t want to see a gangly werewolf because the creature is pure savage strength and brutality, especially Van helsing’s size. Also Frankenstein’s monster was done well he’s not a monster just misunderstood and fears people and fire because of what happened to him and the actor did a phenomenal job with the voice and mannerisms
Also Dracula was so well done, he has that air of power around him but is so charming and cool that you just couldn’t help but listen especially with how calm and friendly he was to Gabriel and how he really seems to think of him like an old fiends really shows how threatening he is but also how charming he can be, especially with how he’s able to shrug off a lot of damage especially that cross and return to his way of talking like it was a simple irritation

They tell us in the movie that once bitten and before midnight of the first full moon they will go into and out of wolf form. Once it strikes 12 on the night of the first full moon once bitten it becomes permanent.
Like in the final fight, while the full moon is visible Van Helsing is in wolf form, but to build tension the moon goes behind some clouds and he shifts back to human. Once the clock strikes twelve regardless of visible moon or not he would become a proper animal who answers to Dracula. Part of why Drac was stalling for time and taunting him.

I think Van Helsing's werewolf form is much bigger and possibly more stronger and an little more chance of retain his human self more time than regular werewolfs is because, as we know, he was the Archangel Gabriel (the left hand of God) now incarnated as a mortal but with some limited but notable enhanced physical and mental skills

I always wondered how Dracula was able to control werewolves in this movie. But then I remembered that in the original Dracula story, Dracula is able to transform into a bat, rat, and wolf and has control over the night’s creatures, including wolves. So it is likely that Van Helsing’s Dracula can control werewolves, albeit with some added torture and manipulation, because he is using his powers on the “wolf side” of werewolves. Although, like Carl said, it is possible for werewolves to assert themselves and have too strong a will for Dracula to command. Considering that, I don’t think werewolves will always be servants to Dracula but are creatures that share a deeper history with him. Also, once the transformation is complete, the wolf side takes over fully, that allows Dracula to more easily assert control.

The werewolves in this movie are beautiful. And I’ve always loved different variations of werewolves no matter how attractive or less attractive they are. But this one has one of the most beautiful werewolves I’ve ever seen in any movie to date.
The reason why Dracula was so very arrogant is because he had power over all werewolves, it’s kind of like freezer when it comes to the sand he knew there was a possibility one might be more powerful than yourself but the likelihood of that happening statistically so was less than 1%. So arrogance would play a factor as in it was highly unlikely that there would ever over the course of their lifetime come up against an adversary were an opponent who would grow in power beyond that. Even know they were prophecies that kind of foreshadow that.
His arrogance is a result of him winning. Dracula that is.
I absolutely love this movie and I am smitten with the concept and specifically Van Helsing‘s werewolf form. It’s a little contradictory if you think about it. He has enough willpower to kill Dracula. But he doesn’t have that same rare form of powerful willpower in order to stop himself from killing the woman that he loves. I would see it as two points. One VanHelsing is the most exceptional werewolf in the entire world. And to it was always his destiny to kill Dracula. Which stems back from there origin which definitely need its own prequel.
No matter the movie no matter the lure, no matter the legend. One thing is consistent is that werewolves and vampires are enemies on every level. In this movie there is a supernatural power one has over the other a master/apprentice relationship of sorts. But I find this so fascinating very interesting.
The vampires are known for the power and the werewolves are known for their speed. But it was this movie that personified with my theory what has been the entire time. Is that it is the werewolves that hold the power not just the speed. And when a werewolf that has enough strength and willpower defies a vampire it will defeat them. Not every single one of one who find the ability to overcome their Enemy.

This is just my own little headcanon but I like to think that the Werewolf curse was a divine punshiment by God on Lycaon the man whose name we give to Lycanthrophy. He was the first Werewolf and is considered the progentier of the curse. Which has spread all across Europe. I like to think it would explain why Dracula could be harmed by one, as the divine aspect of the curse counteracts Dracula's demonic one. As for him being able to control or command them, I think that is a result of werewolves lacking much control, and through some kind of magic or aura of power Dracula is able to dominate these creatures into his servitude. Like how he does with animals in Bram Stoker's original novel

I sorta get the feeling that the "cure" for lycanthropy was actually just Dracula's blood. The syringe was just a backup, because he wouldn't have much time to grab it if he was in a fight for his life. But this would imply that Gabriel was actually already being healed by the blood he has gotten from killing Dracula which makes Anna's sacrifice unnecessary... sadly. So I could be wrong, but it sorta holds up since the "cure" only works on a pre-full moon werewolf.

    Hi Cogan Lollins!
About the origin of Werewolves in Van Helsing's universe, I think that it could be the work of the Devil. The Dark Lord may have granted immortality and a lot of other terrific powers to Dracula, but could not give him "true, eternal life", since that is only given by God (as they say, "the Devil made the pots, but not the covers") or, otherwise, wouldn't want to. What if Dracula, free of every weakness, would have tried to make a coup for Hell's Throne? The Devil had all the interest in leaving a "backdoor" in his newfound lieutenant ... in the detail a creature which Dracula keeps close to himself since he has control over it (as well as the Devil himself, probably), but that also possesses (unconsciously) an inner, narrow window of opportunity to strike him down if it's necessary.
God, in his inscrutable will, in this universe, probably decided that his left hand would have got to arm himself with the power of the Devil and go through the path left open by him, to seal the destiny of his greatest servant ... or at least this is what I hypothesized.
About the reason behind the choice of Dracula for a single vial of antidote instead of an armory of silver bullets ... pride (and mostly plot) I suppose.
And lastly, thinking at the Dwergi, I always thought about creatures inspired by the original Dark Elves/Dwarfs of Norse Mythology.
    My best regards to You!

I believe Dracula used what energy he could from their father , killing him in the process. Therefore he can continue towards his goals, while ensuring he doesn't have more than one werewolf as a threat.

I didn’t understand the part about staying stuck in Wolf form after the first full moon? I thought the brother turned into the Werewolf and then turned back into human, and then again into a Werewolf, and then when he died he turned back into human??

I don’t know if I remember he turned back into a human one more time and then when he turned back into a wolf at the end, that was the last time we will see him as a man

I believe Velkan simply transformed back & forth uncontrollably and repeatedly until his first full moon during the experiment. At which point he permanently changed until he died.
And Van Helsing wasn’t the only or first to do the permanent transformation for werewolves. It was also in Viking Wolf, Jack Nicholsons Wolf, Ginger Snaps and Williams Werewolves of Underworld.

Didn't even get a notification for this Bloody CZcams sometimes.
To me 5 of the oldest Werewolfs are in no Order.
    Marcus's Brother - Underworld.
The Beast of Gevaudan - Teen Wolf.
The Wolfman Father - The Wolfman 2010.
The Viking Wolf - Viking Wolf.
    Skyrim Werewolfs. Elder Scrolls.
I know one is a Species of them and not a single one but i think it counts.
I hope this helps i love Werewolfs more then i like Vampires and i can't wait for the count down 😃
Respect and keep up the epic work.

I all ways thought the werewolf at the start was their dad/Missing old dude that had been turned. I saw Van Helsing when it first came out and was captivated by the effects and the monsters. I bought the DVD as soon as it was released and watched it until the DVD was so worn and beat up it couldn't play any more. I really wish they would have continued the franchise like was originally planed.

I always thought that it was implied that the first Werewolf in Van Hellsing was either Velkan and Anna's father, or Velarious the Elder himself.

The green blood i always thought was a call back to the hound of Baskerville. When the guy poured "green blood" and creating the hound like a scooby doo villian. Id be sad if this wasn't the case.

You have to remember Velkin was fighting the change but Van Helsing just went with it maybe that's why VH's change is so quick and smooth.

You spoke of the Werewolves neon green blood, but if you take another look at the part where the werewolf gets shot and killed, when the silver bullet hits him his blood is red. I kinda feel like in post someone was like, "Why green?" When they said idk they must have been told to scrap it

When Dracula hold Van Helsing's silver cross, he cried in pain as the silver melts. Silver also hurts Dracula too.
As for armies, werewolves are feral creatures, Dracula keeps a few to avoid any out of control outbreak that might messed with his livestock, mankind, or avoid any chance any werewolf might have a free will to fight him and kill him.

This movie did werewolves design really well. IMHO I like the giant wolf version better but this humanoid wolf is the next best thing. It continuously perplexes me how others get the designs wrong, in some cases so wrong if you weren't told in the show that it's a werewolf you wouldn't know.
