The presumptive test is the first test you do for water testing. It is just the name of the test where you grow the water you are testing in lactose broth. That's pretty much all it is. Most Probable Number "MPN" is what you calculate after doing the presumptive test to determine if water is potable which means drinkable.
Most probable number method is the whole test and it includes 3 steps 1- presumptive test, 2- confirming test both for detection coliform group, 3- complete test to detect the fecal bacteria .
