      Also, it's nice that you share your first impressions of an instrument with us because that's when it first starts speaking to you - the best thing about a new to me instrument is the places it drags me to if it has grabbed me by the gut.

      I think the "lead" circuit is a bit of eq and tone shaping, like having a rudimentary effects onboard. Leo also made an OMG circuit in the G&L days that also mystifies a lot of people but when people use it, it sounds distinctive but still nicely fits in where it was.

    Yet another brilliant video from you, Matthew. In fact you just keep getting better and better. Every upload is an instant click to watch from me, and they never disappoint. Can’t wait to see the authentication video on this one. You may not think Jazzmasters are for you, but you still made some beautiful sounds out of this stunning guitar, I really don’t think there’s a guitar out there that you can’t showcase to its very best. Your playing is exceptional and timeless. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

    Yea buddy - you finally found one! I don't know how many of these I've played - in real and reissues as well as Squier copies. My asshole brother had one of these but someone desoldered the rhythm pickup circuit. Not only that but they repainted it in green then blue. He took it all apart and never once did it ever get played again. He sold it to another guy that had his own place to sell stuff and restored it. I never saw it again. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us to enjoy!

    2:27 Actually Matt the first in '58 and early 59 like the Strats and Teles were maple necks. Here is the third Jazzmaster off the production line in '58 with a mapleneck owned by Freddie Tavarez and sold to Norm in '89 for sale for $100k USD is still up on reverb as a past sold.

      Jazzmasters are a joke compared to Strat. Inferior in all respects. Looks ... fugly vs Sexy and Stratospheric, functionality the Strat trem is miles better than the JMs. PIckups and tones are better on a Strat also. Why bother unless you get a vintage one cheap? Only an idiot would make such a fugly bad design in the 21st century.

    What the "rhythm" circuit in Jazzmaster and Jaguars actually do is give you two options for your tone stack (vol and tone controls) one option is the usual 250k pots you usually see with single coil pickups and the rhythm circuit has 1M pots, the tone caps are also different but that's the basic gist of what's going on. This is a great example to point out when someone asks how the pot values effect tone.

    • @davidkieltyka9
      @davidkieltyka9 Před rokem +4

      The rhythm circuit is usually a 1MOhm vol pot paired with a 50KOhm tone pot, giving a darker overall sound.
      The normal circuit is 1MOhm vol and tone pots. Some players do swap in 250K or 500K pots, though, to smooth out treble frequencies.
      The rhythm circuit tone cap filters out a bit more high end when the tone pot is turned down than the normal circuit tone cap does.

    Jazzmaster middle position is by far my favourite guitar sound so THANK you for actually playing with it unlike almost every other american jazzmaster review I've ever seen. Everyone just wants to play the neck and bridge which is really annoying at times when I'm trying to see what a model sounds like.

    @luckymanmusic Před rokem +2

    You gotta get rid of that buzz stop and put a mastery in the bridge. The buzz stop fixes the problem of unwanted noise but takes away the magic of the jazzmaster at the same time. If you just give it a good setup you wont need the buzzstop.

There's a great pic of the late great Walter Becker with his Fender Jazzmaster, it's more than possible that he recorded the solo gtr part for 'Josie' on this instrument. Looking forward to seeing more on this superb '63 example. Nice one Matthew! 🎶👍

    Congratulations, Matthew. I too was charmed by an old rosewood fretboard (I believe still has it's original frets) sunburst Fender Jazzmaster, and had to buy it. It has about the same wear & tear as yours does, which gives it a lot of character. The Jazzmasters are good guitars. I remember a kid in the main rock band of our High School had a shiny brand new Jazzmaster. His had the bound fingerboard with large block inlays, spiffy chrome capped control knobs, and I think a large headstock. With his solid state Vox amp, the Top Forty hits played by his band had a solid ringing tone. When he used a 1st generation Marshall Supa Fuzz (which I understand was based on the British Mk 1 Tonebender) on In A Gadda Da Vida, the tone of his Jazzmaster sounded great with the song.

    Jazzmaster and Jaguars are my favorite Fenders. That buzz stop roller must have been added by a previous owner as it would not have been on the guitar from the factory. The bridge appears to be sitting almost flat against the pickguard. If you raise the bridge to the proper height, and shim the neck then you don't need the buzz stop.
