18 inch bar Vs. 25 inch bar ~ Stihl MS311 ~ How much slower is the 25 inch bar?

  • Today I’m going off course a bit and testing the difference in speed between an 18 inch bar and a 25 inch bar. I’m using my Stihl MS311 and 2 brand new full chisel chains.
    I know this isn’t an exact test, but it should give you a good idea of what to expect if you’re thinking of moving to a larger bar.
    Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching!

    I bought one with a 20 and it’s been decent. But it seems like I need more oil. Opened the oiler all the way up and past the 1/4 turn. I didn’t know it was only a 1/4 turn. Flagg mentioned that on his channel. That is can be reset if you go past the 1/4 turn. Wasn’t much of a stop. Wish it had said 1/4 turn only. Added a 661 also for when more power is needed.

      How do you like the 661? I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a big bore saw even though I probably don’t need it…lol

    Nice video. I’m in the market for a new shtil I have a 024 that’s going on 40 yrs old starting to slow down It has done me well. Have it since we got our deer camp

      Wow, 40 years! That saw doesn’t owe you a thing…if you’re looking for weight savings, go with a pro grade saw if it’s in budget. The MS311 is good value for HP, but it’s a pretty heavy chainsaw.

      @@treestandmanoutdoors yes the 024 is a little heavy as well.

    Great video. I'm looking at an MS 311 with 20in bar to retire my old 029. Not sure the comparison would be as close with the hard woods I'll be cutting though.

      I think that would be a perfect option. I’ve cut maple with the 18” bar and it cuts through with no issues. I should have done a hardwood comparison, but at the time I didn’t have any log length.

    Was that a regular full comp chain, or was it a full skip chain? I'm looking for a chain for my ms311. It runs a full skip wonderfully, but on stihl's website, it says that a full skip chain is no longer available. I'm concerned about putting a non skip chain on it with a 25 inch bar because I've heard that it won't pull it very well.

      I run a regular full comp chain. It’s a bit sluggish on big cuts, but for bucking smaller stuff where at least 50% of the chain is not in the wood, it does fine.

      @treestandmanoutdoors  Před 2 měsíci

      I may look for an aftermarket full skip chain that fits, because it would be nice to have those higher RPMs when cutting big stuff.

    I never understood why everybody wants their chainsaw to be super fast I would rather have a torque saw to pull wood chips. Sthil really never made there saws to be fast.. fast is Husqvarna.. torque is Stihl.. the ms311 was to be set at 13,500rpm if I remember correctly the fastest sthil I have and run a 20" bar tirn up the oiler tho with full Chisel skip and eats Locus logs nothing pulls like my 038mag full port job 32" bar skip chain full Chisel.
    Don't mean to blab.

      Punky wood…lol. If I were to guess, maybe Eastern Cottonwood based on the bark, but it was at the house when we bought it, so I have no clue.

      It gets a little better once the break in period is over, but I agree that it’s slightly underpowered for a 25 inch bar. I think a 20 inch bar would be the sweet spot.
