  • Sometimes you don't have the perfect attachment for the job. And today, that's exactly the case. I'll spread my Northwoods Whitetail screen seed, but I need to get it under the surface and I don't have a cultipacker. What I do have is a Pulverizer with a rolling spiked drum on the back. I'm hoping I can use that to successfully bed the seed.

    Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. I was going to say running that seed through a spreader is a ballsy move. It's tough to get a good feel for how much you're using. It does work well for large seed you need hundreds of pounds per acre for like rye but for anything under 25#/acre it can be tough to get the rate right and keep the seed where you want it. One other tip I learned the hard way. You'll need about 15 yards of screen if you want it to screen your plot all the way through November and into December. Once it goes from green to yellow it loses a lot of its volume.

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Hehe, yeah, I think I'll do what I do with clover and brassicas in the future and mix it in with winter rye/wheat. 15 yards wide? 45 stinking feet wide? Whew, that's a lot. I'll have to see how my thicker areas shake out late fall/early winter.

    • @wolfpack4128
      @wolfpack4128 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@GoodWorksTractors I should say if you want it to keep blocking your access once the snow hits. I did about 15 feet the first year and was stoked at the results. Then the leaves shrunk once they yellowed and it was still decent. Then we got snow in early November and it did absolutely nothing to screen my approach. Last year I put on the side of my shooting house about 20 yards deep and on the other side about 10 yards deep. The 20 turned out to be overkill. I used 50# of Egyptian Wheat last year and it turned out awesome. I also spread 1000# of urea on it once it got about chest high and it ended up over 10 foot tall.

    Thank you for taking on the (Summit) Line, Testing it against the big comparison Subcompact Line of the BIG guys. I just have a question that you should ask (Summit) what about a mid mount Belly Blade. I ran those for a Paving company. These were purpose built Graders. (Summit) could take a front Blade, cut off TOP just a hair. Mount a (real Grader) blade in the center of the subcompact
    Line. I was just thinking in my head. There is an adjustment Lower or higher, MOW control. Just think if you could Run a GRADER blade off those controls, raise and lower Blade, just like mower cut height. If (Summit) made that type of mid mount grading Blade. I think they would have a TOOL that NO subcompact MAKES on the market.

    I had Rim Guard installed in my 60-hp tractor by my local tractor dealer. Unfortunately, his tech filled the tires - as in FILLED the tires - to the point of no air left for the tire to flex. They rode like a couple of big rocks. No problem, Rim Guard is biodegradable, right? I'll just drain some out. Parked in an unused portion of a field so the valves were at at the 2:00 position, pulled the valve cores and let the excess drain out on the ground (and pants, boots, etc.), then hooked up the air compressor to replace the air. Worked great.
    Except... take the "biodegradable" with a grain of salt. The grass that the beet juice landed on was deader than if it was sprayed with Roundup. And it never grew back. And boy, did it stink! I finally couldn't take the smell any longer and used the bucket to remove the top two inches of topsoil, mixed it with some subsoil and used it as a weed-free parking area for my attachments.
    I don't want to badmouth the product - it works great. Just make sure the dealer leaves an air pocket in the tires.

    I tried planting that tall screen seed (bought it directly from them) and none of it germinated. Planted it in June and nothing came up. Looks like you had good success. Even though it's getting late in the year I think I'll try it again. Instructions say it needs to be planted deep...maybe that was the part I messed up as mine only has a thin layer of soil over it.

    Looking forward to seeing those comparisons.
    I would like to see a turning radius test between all 3 of your JD 25hp machines vs this new summit machine.

I think about the scooters we used to have. Both were around 50cc. Wife had a smaller lighter bike, I had a bigger heavier bike. New only means its shiny. It can and will still break. In 30yrs if parts are still available then it's something to brag about.

    Nice looking tractor. JD owner here. I don't have a problem paying for known quality brands like Case, Kubota, New Holland or Massey and I'm just speaking my own point of view. If I'm investing in a new tractor brand, its going to be at a significant discount from what I can buy the big name tractors...I'm talking 25-35% discount because in 10 years when the off brand manufacturer is out business, what's my resale on it going to be? If they're only discounted 5-10% off a new JD, why would I take a chance? I'm not hating on Summit. Its probably plenty good and I doubt anyone can sell them with that large of a discount. I looked at some "cheaper" brand tractors and around here, they were not that much cheaper than JD. Hopefully Summit will become an established name and be around forever. The market needs competition.

    Really like the tractor, but it’s like a lot of tractors out there. They are a hienz 57 tractor, too many companies have their hands in it. Engine by another company, transmission and axle by another and the body by another. I’m glad a I got a Yanmar, they make the whole tractor with a 10 yr warranty. But don’t worry because no one on CZcams will talk about it, it’s hilarious actually.

    Like it or not if the Summit tractor is not $10,000 less then a John Deere or Kubota. It would be not worth the risk to buy. If the tractor and its parts are not be available in 5 to 10 years let alone 25 or more if are not available then the tractor is useless when it brakes down.

      If the are using the big box store formula where they use Walmart / home depot stores or online and then require independent repair shops to sine up to provide service. that only works until the independent shop get tired of being shafted by Summit also their customers that actually purchased from them get first priority and then the Summit tractor sits collecting dust for days. Like it or not importers come and go daily. Now mater how you spin it they are only a importer not the manufacture. @@GoodWorksTractors

      @@dennisveerkamp2707 Your argument assumes some massive advantage owning Deere or Kubota in regards to parts and service. My equipment sits for weeks or months at either of my local dealers to get fixed. Either waiting on parts or waiting on techs. It’s part of the reason I’ve considered Summit. Those name brands that folks are brainwashed for have very real struggles. I get emails many times week about foolish salesmen and service techs at JD and Bota dealers all over the country.
      It’s so bad that I have multiple pieces of their equipment that I’m dealing with in “repair needed” condition because I can’t afford to be without for huge chunks of time.
      So, why pay more for that?

    • @dennisveerkamp2707
      @dennisveerkamp2707 Pƙed rokem

      Like it or not a lot of other importers have come and gone and the product have no parts available. My insight comes from a independent repair shop that has to deal with the issue of people buying from a big box store and demanding repair support because I sell the same brand of products. Like it or not there will be a John Deere dealer 10 years from now, can you guarantee that there will be Summit support? Like I said they are a importer not a manufacturer they can shut down and walk away. Unless there is a big cost savings is it worth the risk? Just because they offer a few more options can not make sense without a good deal. Tractors have more than 50 year life but if you can not get parts because you choose to buy a new brand and not save alot of money you choose wrong. Tractors are not cars where 20 or so years most are scrap. Tell me how long is the contract Summitt has with the manufacturer?

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  Pƙed rokem

      @@dennisveerkamp2707 You can’t guarantee John Deere and Kubota will be around. Simply an opinion. Solis is already in the USA and has been for some time now. This is what Summit is based off. Parts are stored domestically. Can’t act like JD and Kubota don’t have to import their parts too. Summit is 30% backed by Yanmar. Be a naysayer, but just be ready to own it when you’re wrong.
