About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Dude, much respect for just going straight with the testing, it's nice to hear a few errors, shows that you're legit just enjoying what you're doing and not re recording a million times to get the "perfect test".
I'm looking at moving to Japan within a year from now, and I was crying that I was going to have to leave behind my EVH 5150 50 Watt. This give me some hope. Now if I can get a guitar across the ocean, I might just be okay.
You can buy some awesome guitars over there I bet!
Aaron Archual There are power converters available . When I was stationed in Europe I just replaced the power supply in my Rhodes stack with a British standard one .
@@gilbertspader7974 My issue and question is how on earth do you get a guitar amp across the ocean? *If you're flying
Can i go with you? hahaha
@@Aaron-zh4kj Ask a moving or shipping company.
Also if it wasn't clear, this amp sim plays damned nice with alllllll sorts of IRs, Pulse from Lancaster makes it crazy easy.
Best comment. It also responds well with using your actual drive pedals
I Saw that switch, what's an IR?
edit: impulse response... mhmm
edit2: that made things considerably worse with that cab sim O_o
edit3: ok it's been like 2 hours, things sound better now. Need to finely tweak a few things and just keep listening for the MUD
@@blgdinger3 mf just didn't know how to use an ir
Pretty good amp - I tried the free version only. It's main strength imo is that it works really well on the low end - it keeps both its clarity and "chunk", even at very fast palm mute picking, which is where most amp sims turn to mud. The high end sounds kinda thin, but the general gain of this amp tends to the dry side, so that was expected. Pairing it with another sim like a TSE X50 helps to fill that in.
I have recorded a ton of demos with it and absolutely love it. I have 5 or 6 of the neural plugins and honestly prefer this one more often than not. It handles third party IR amazing and I will even run my Savage Drive from Airis into my interface to tighten it more. Big fan of this plugin and the price, thank you ML!
Glen, thanks for the amazing tips. I was wondering if you'd eventually give us some tips on later stages of mixing and also a bit of mastering. Your videos are an amazing resource to achieve great sounding instrument tracks, but getting everything together in harmony, punch and clarity would make an amazing tutorial.
Great seeing you've improved your guitar chops Glenn, greetings from Mexico
I bought the full licence for this beast about a month ago. I can still remember how shocked I was at how hefty and brutal the 5034 sounded straight upon install without any extenal IR's or surgical EQ. I've pretty much disregarded all of my other software amp sims at this point (at least for demoing purposes).
I've been using this paired with my lelead preamp pedal so that I have 2 pretty different tracks on each side left and right, which is resulting in a really cool quad tracked sound and it was a free way to upgrade my tone. So grateful for this thing!!!!
Gave it a shot and At first glance it seems to sound better than my regular full priced metal amp sim. Incredible move by Fluff to release it for free, much respect
I can't cut it as a metal player, but I love your channel - straight talking good sense that crosses any supposed genre boundaries! 👍I'll definitely take advantage of this! I just bought ML's new VX30 plugin and it's awesome - so what's not to love about some free high gain tones (which I'm sure I'll find useful)! 😎
At 4:43...wow! 😳 That is ONE of the best guitar tones I have ever heard on any of your productions...if not THE best. Killer tone.
Amazing tone for sure. It reminds me of Carcass Heartwork.
Cool! I love it. I think I'll combine this tone with one that I use in Guitar Rig, for my next cover. Four rhythm guitars (two left & right with this free tone and two left & right with the other). Should sound absolutely killer! Thanks, Glenn!
Nothing fills my soul with joy more than the sound of a pinch harmonics
Amen, its like getting fisted by Zeus himself
thanks Glenn, tried this with a Warlock in drop C with a set of ZW EMGs and every preset sounds killer right out of the box. very cool
Thanks for the tip, brother! Works like a charm. :)
If anyone has issues with setting the whole thing up in the program, make sure that your microphone settings in Windows are set to 48kHz, otherwise you'll keep getting an error message from the program.
Thank you so much Glenn! I'm new to recording/mixing and this amp simulation sounds amazing!! :)
Happy to help!
Thank you so much Glenn! You always promote and show the best stuff!
Damn... I've been looking for a decent amp sim for weeks! This video came out at a perfect time!
This was the first plugin I got and I absolutely love. I still use it alot when I want something really chunky
I like it more than Emissary. There's way too many knobs and switches on Emissary which I never touch, but this amp sim has just enough to get the job done. Kudos for the vid Glenn!
this is truly amazing with the pulse ir thanks glen this helped me sooooo much
I've been using this for a few months now and it's seriously the best sim I've ever played through, I love it
This is killer! Thanks for sharing this with us Glen! Excited to give it a try :)
Recently got into doing some home recording and I can't praise this enough. Downloaded shortly after launch and I was not disappointed.
Been using the free amp sim for a few months now and I love it. It’s my go to for heavy tones currently.
Dude!!! thank you so much for recommending this!
I went to download this immediately! Im all for free plugins to try different things out before dropping cash left and right. And this amp sim sounds incredible!
I was looking for a free amp sim to write a little album and this did not let me down at all. its kind of on the metal side but thats not necessarily a bad thing. i think im actually glad i unlocked this tone after using it for so long
Nevermind, I got it to work. That's pretty awesome. I have every guitar i have ever wanted and don't plan to buy anymore. And I've been collecting pedals for years, i love finding and playing with cool little pedals and that'll never change. Amps on the other hand are insanely expensive and take up a lot of space. These amp emulators are just awesome. Thanks.
I downloaded this today and tried it out and this thing rules! Thank you!
I just downloaded this sim. Insane. Thanks for the info Glenn!
Thanks so much for the tip. Love and learn so much from your videos
Wow. I live on a boat so space is premium gave up my entire rig but was missing a really good distorted amp sound I could play though my Mac. Wow you delivered and it’s brilliant !!!
Great content as always Glenn thanks. You did an amp sim shoot out a while back, the Waves PRS came out on top. There has been lots of amp sims come out since. What is currently your personal favourite simulator? Ta from the UK
And there is also an IR loader IN this plugin. Just press on the "IR" on the right of the cab on/off switch and you can load own IRs :)
I downloaded it a month ago, blew my mind. It is great to have an awesome sound right out the box and the gate works great.
If you want to enhance the lead tone for solos, the built-in reverb does the trick.
Nice to be able to plugin a guitar and star chugging away. No more excuses for not practicing 🤣
Thank you for the video. What a great plug in!
This is a really awesome amp! I already have the free version, I am putting my eyes on the paid version cause I really dig the Marshall sound! Thanks for your review!
This is the only free amp sim I use right now. High Noon and Metalcore presets blend beautifully with minimal adjustments. 10/10
I've been using Nalex and the TH-U Sim with impulses from Devils Lab which sounds awsome but I'm definitely going to check this one out! Sounds Great.
Thanks! I'm a keyboard player with very minimal guitar abilities. I bought Guitar Rig 3 back when I started guitar but that's no longer compatible or upgradable without buying the latest full Guitar Rig. This is a good alternative for my very occasional guitar tracks.
ooooh I was waiting for you to do this one Glenn, nice.

Maybe he's born with, maybe it's SMG.
Easy, breezy, beautiful metal guy

Hell yeah, been using this free version for a few months, seriously kicks ass
Those drums sound so f***ing kick ass!!
Being the heavy EDM producer I am, I kinda love that direct out/no cabinet sound. I'd do my own post-EQ but that crunch is a sound I like
I have had this amp sim since the day he released the "free" 5034. I have Bias Amp 2 but find myself using the 5034 way more!! Awesome amp sim!!!
This is really amazing for free , what I don't like is that lately every amp sim starts to sound the same or trying to get the same guitar tone. The only one that started to sound different was the freeman and then after a few "necessary" tweeks ended up very similar tone
I just downloaded this and thanks!!! this amp sim is fantastic!
this amp sim with your free rev cab ir... fucking fire!! Been killing it with that setup for a few weeks!!
I made a Jingle using it already. Amazing tone! Great for Home Studio!!
Dude! Sold! I love Emissary too but I have had a hell of a time finding the right IR's to go with it (yes I tried Lancaster too) also trying to pull down the harsh frequencies was a bit of a pain, but I did get it there. But this thing sounds pretty killer.
Dude go check out the zeta ir pack. It’s totally free. There’s a download link in their video for it. The bogner 2x12 pairs really well with the ignite sim
If it's for free it's for me. Thanks for keeping us informed on the free loot frontier! You're a good man, Theon.
To answer the title of your video Glenn, yes; this is without a doubt the world's best free amp simulator. I have a close friend aspiring to record some good metal and I have been helping him along the way. With this simulator things like training your ear to listen for quality IR's, worrying about mic placement and stacking a great tone won't hinder him to begin with. Yes, these are incredibly important skills to learn, but this amp sim gives his ear a "goal" to work toward when building tones - instead of spending years going through trial and error to finally realise what you should be listening for. 10/10, would recommend and fuck you Glenn, from Australia
I like that the noise gate comes with it!
A must have for playing metal!
Damn, I thought I had to bust the bank to get a sound like this, thanks for reviewing this!
Dam Is no one going talk about how much better Glenn is getting with his guitar playing! :) love you man you Rock!!
@Matt G dude, no.
I used the 5034 on a track alongside with a real Peavey 5150 and a Gallien Krueger 2100 SEL and I was really happy with the results. I just put a little bit of the Soundtoys Cristalyzer to give it an Eventide H3000 kinda harmonizer effect and that was it, i got myself a kickass chorusy rythm guitar sound.
By the way, the guy who sent you the GK 2000 CPL contacted me through my demo video for the 2100. I'm SO excited to hear your take on that amp! When is that video coming out?
Hands down the BEST free amp sim I have a cheap 150 dollar guitar tuning in drop B and I use this with the lancaster pulse and some free bogner inpulse responses and IT SOUNDS AMAZING
Lovely to see Warren's desk hahahahaha. That amp sim is aweome!
It is INSANE to see the difference between year 2000 and 2021 amp sims. The cost is cheaper, the quality is better and its all instantly delivered when you download it. DAMN.
for anyone who’s interested putting the cab knob off and putting on some rev gets an amazing burzum filosofen tone
I've been using the free version since it came out. Such a massive tone for the low low price of free
What audio interface would you recommend to use with to plug in with?
This is an awesome sim. Also to all of my peeps who depend on free stuff there is also Overlouds Th3 that comes for free with the Cakewalk (ex sonar) DAW which is also free.
hey glen! I would love to see a review of pod farm 2.5 or even a comparison of that and bias fx 2? I am looking into amp simulators because the acoustics in my room are not great if you know what I mean. great video and keep up the great content!
That's a freaking awesome plugin (off course for those like me that still doesn't have the real deal... ) thank you for the tip!
Idk the EQ section of the ML Labs products reacts so different from the real amps - but it's an easy plugin to use. You might want to give Amplex - Multiamp a try, it's really awesome and free.
Tried this amp sim today, all I can say, they nailed it.
Hi David, is this like a VST that you use in like Cubase or Logic? Or is it standalone?
@@lorencing I used it as a VST but it also comes as standalone.
Oh, I know what I'm going to try out this weekend!
It does sound great. Use the dad rock preset with the build in OD in it. It sounds just perfect. Not an uncontrolled amount of gain and tight. I was really impressed with the built in gate on this thing as well. It's not choppy at all and has such a smooth cut off from the sound
I'll check it out!
Just got a damn near perfect Cannibal Corpse tone out of the 'Freeman Fluff'; then output it through a Marshall 100w DSL and 1960A cab... DEAR LORD WHAT CRUNCH!!! Insta-buy, thank you Glen!
Love the drum sounds!
I've been playing around with the free model since it came out (it didn't have reverb on it back then!) and I've made a few observations, but other people's mileage may vary.
1) A lot of gain. Like seriously a LOT. Even when pulled down to 1 it can be too much gain for what I want. As a consequence, I find it hard to get the detail of what I'm playing to come through. It won't be helping that I'm playing a HSS strat, though, so that one is partially on me. I can't really get it to chug in the way other people can, but again, I'm playing a strat in standard tuning.
2) The EQ controls aren't quite as influential over the sound as I would have expected.
3) The built in cabinet sim works better for this amp than any cab sim I've got (e.g. Glenn's Revv v30 and some stuff I bought from Ugritone recently)
4) It sounds great when combined with the emissary.
5) The noise gate is a great feature. The room I'm in has all sorts of sources of electrical interference, and my guitar doesn't have those new noiseless Fender single coil pickups.
Overall, I prefer the emissary and I use it on pretty much every track somewhere, but I do still try out this amp often as it's worth putting it on a track and seeing how it fits. So, I'd still definitely recommend people at least download it. It's not exactly going to waste your money given that it's free!
I've never used this one but I may have to do a shootout with the free module vs emissary. I myself am not a shred heavy/metal player but have gotten use out of emissary and feel like I can work my way around these gain heavy issues. If I can't, then I won't bother you know?
thanks a lot for your advice ! just downloaded amped roots 5034 and I also subscribed to your channel I really appreciated ,
the last time i tried that free module it sounds extremely fizzy and all. turns out that i'm just suck. definitely gonna check it out again because of this video.
Glenn, you can hit the IR font and load an Impuls in it, its basicly a Impuls Loader. Greetings
Yeah this amp sim sounds absolutely killer, I’m getting it
I just bought myself my first audio interface and this is sick. I got to find some nice clean tones though.
Damn! Thanks for sharing that... Loved it!
Been watching for years thanks for this gem
great video
what do i need to set up a complete or even basic digital set up ?
i mean, from my pc to my guitar
I just downloaded this. It’s really good. Thanks for the recommendation.
I have this plugin in my pc, the sound and feeling is awsome!!!!! It's really killer and smasher amp sim
That’s a really nice app. These sims keep getting better.
most of the covers that I make use this amp sim. I used a shitty Yamaha guitar for a while but this amp sim still worked like a charm. W my new guitar it's an absolute beast and sounds super wide and heavy in the mix
thank you very much , i've downloaded just now
That thing is awesome but I highly recommend some IRs for it. The stock one is decent but it shines with some good IRs.
I got it a couple of months ahí and didnt used yet ,thanks to remind me thats sound killer
This plug-in sounds great with Airis Effects IRs which are also free
Wicked! First view and like! Pays to slack off at work. 😎 The tones from that mix coming back at me from my monitors are rad. I have to check that out. Thanks Glenn!
I've been using Boogex a lot lately. It sounds like crap at first, but if you find some solid impulses and do some tweaking, it sounds better than many of the paid virtual amps I've used.
Wow!!! This really is one of the vst guitar plugs.
What else you have to do to get that full sound? Love a detailed video of that
Thanks man appreciate it!
Fluffy like marshmallows waiting to get roasted! Cheers Glenn!!
@3:17 - A little Joan Jett & the Blackhearts there by accident.. it's not exact, but the song sounds like Do You Wanna Touch Me. Cool song.
WOW, It sounds amazing!
That's tight playing dude. What's your opinion on Amplitude 4? Thanks for the link.
Those tones sound great. What pickups are you using?
