I imagine the design process for Blade Man's weapon went something like this:
Dev #1: "He looks pretty awesome, but how should his weapon work? Sword or gun?"
Dev #2: "Umm...Sword shotgun? 😄"
Dev #3: "Sounds good enough to me. Let's go with that. 🤣"

Blade... trident... metal... etc. Pretty much any sharp weapon is lethal in the Megaman Universe with one exception being Needleman's ability.
