    Jazza, you should do a black & white drawing challenge in Photoshop (aka, make your screen B&W) so when it comes to the end result, seeing the colours you ended up with is a total surprise!

    I still don't understand clipping masks, even after watching this.

    • @spikednautilus
      @spikednautilus Před 3 lety +23

      You can think of clipping masks as a wierdly shaped window. The shape that you colour in on your clipping mask is the shape of the window that you can see through. Jazza’s clipping mask is that mid-tone grey that he filled in. If you have a layer ‘snapped’ to your clipping mask, the only parts of that layer you will see is where the clipping mask has colour. The name “clipping mask” describes a shape that “clips” and “masks” out everything else outside of its shape, like the wall around a window. Let me know if you’d like any clarification. 🙂

    As someone who's been drawing purely traditionally for the past decade and is finally transitioning to digital, this video taught me an important lesson I needed, that no one else is teaching me.
    And hard as it is to swallow, it's a lesson I need to come to grips with.
    There are simply something effects you can't do on your own, and that's why your programs can do them for you.
    The filtering
    The glows
    The radiant lighting effects
    It's all there because YOU CAN'T DRAW IT FREE HANDEDLY. At least not unless you're an expert, but even then, experts probably still use these techniques because they're there to be used and save so much time and mistakes. It's time I accept that I can't draw everything... and that's okay.
    Thank you for the lesson Jazza.

    To do the clipping mask in Krita, you must place all the layers in group. The layer you wish to use as a clipping mask must be at the bottom of the stack (or under), and the layers you wish to be inside the mask must have inherit alpha clicked (it looks like a funky a or 3/4 of an infinity sign with a strike through it when activated).
    This is something that took me a while to figure out when I first switched from PS to Krita. I have been thinking of making some Krita tutorials for a while if anyone is interested, let me know.

    • @LucRio448
      @LucRio448 Před 6 lety +28

      Well, one option I use whenever trying to do something without lineart is to..actually use lineart. If you are doing digital art, you can easily draw things with lineart, color them and then simply hide the linart layer (and mybe refine the areas where you had lineart before)^^

    • @stardeis
      @stardeis Před 6 lety +10

      or you can color the lineart the same as the colours you used and then merge them?

    • @LucRio448
      @LucRio448 Před 6 lety +3

      You could, but then you have to color a line with at least 3 different colors due to light and shadows

    • @Manganization
      @Manganization Před 6 lety +5

      With blending lineart, I tend to lessen the opacity of the lineart (or use the multiply, darken etc, layer filters) and then use the eraser tool and erase the lines which doesn't seem to be necessary. Sometimes, I simply just send the lineart into the bg and paint over it.

    There were some shading tricks I already sort of knew, but which I hadn’t really utilized well, and I am a complete mess when it comes to masking layers. I can’t believe how easy clipping masks are, and I’m just kicking myself for never putting in the effort to learn about them. It would have made so many projects so much easier.
    Thank you so much for taking us step-by-step through you process. As soon as I get a functioning tablet again, I’m going to be unstoppable!

    You should try out cel shading, I promise you it'll really help improve your digital art. Also, the crayon brush for the soft shading looks, to put it bluntly, bad. I'd recommend more of a chalk or pencil brush, so you can get some sort of hard edge.
