As regards pairing off fights and people "always playing it that way" -- at least over here in the U.S. I've never played against anybody in any setting who has always played it that way. Fights always had to pair off into one-on-one fights where possible. The rule seemed pretty unambiguous. That said, I've only been playing a couple years. Really surprised about the different reactions to this one and credit to the MESBG team for identifying an important rule that actually was being interpreted differently but practically nobody was talking about.
