    I have never seen anyone so equally passionate about and frustrated at the improper use of a light stand. And I'm loving every second of it.

    Every time I have newbies putting away stands they ALWAYS ALWAYS mess with that bottom knob. What is it about that bottom knob that people are so attracted to???

    When I spread the legs on a light stand I extend them to the point that the leg supports are parallel with the floor or ground. That maximizes the spread of the legs, making it a bit less likely to tip over. Sand bags or other weight is recommended too, of course.

      I can't stand seeing the leg supports not parallel!! To me it's always been obvious that physics alone should tell someone that having them horizontal gives the stand the most support, as it's the widest the feet can be.

    Great info about these stands, and it's interesting to see you orient two legs aligned with the angle of view. Can you contrast this kind of set up with how C-stands are typically oriented with one leg pointed toward the subject, and the back legs sand-bagged so that there is no chance that the light will fall on the talent? Thanks JP. Great channel, and hugely entertaining. And also great to see Dave from Learning DSLR Video commenting!

    Very good but 1 important point with stands, especially stands with heavy lights. Never grab the vertical post when raising or lowering. If you've ever caught your skin (the part between the thumb and first finger) in hurts like crazy. You may do it once but you'll never do it again.

    Great video, and I think I just found my next new set of stands. One question, though: Air-cushioned or not? I very rarely have anyone but myself working with the stands so the whole, "Dangerous-to-gear-not-theirs Newbie" thing isn't much of an issue.
    Thanks!

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  Před 8 lety

      +Robert Campbell I think you're fine without. I don't normally use air-cushioned stands because when I started they didn't have them and it's just what I'm used to. It's really just personal preference.
