Use Your Serato Library On CDJs - DJ Conversion Utility Review | Beatsource Tech

  • A question often asked by some Serato DJ Pro users is how they can get their crates, cues and loops into Rekordbox. Not because they want to switch, but so they can do a gig or two playing just off USB drives on CDJs. On the new episode of Beatsource Tech, we look at Mojaxx‘s favorite tool for doing that job (and a lot more besides): DJ Conversion Utility.

    This industry should be deeply ashamed of itself with its DJ ecosystems deliberately being incompatible with each other and heavily leaning on predatory subscription models. The idea that in 2022 you need an obscure indie app from some Dutch wedding DJ (all the respect to Mixmaster G btw, the man is doing God's work) to make these systems even talk to eachother is just completely insane when you think of it.
    We're already in 2022 and it makes me sad the pathetic state in which this DJ industry still is. We're talking issues here that were already rampant a decade ago. Where the heck is open source when you really, really need it?

      @Drrolfski Před 2 lety

      @@MixMasterG My sincere apologies mate, no means to disrespect. "Wedding DJ" (which IMO is a skill on its own, definitely as intricate as club DJ) in this context is more meant as drive-in DJ. But if that's not even the case then I hope at least it made for a good quote to stir up this much-needed discussion.

    • @MixMasterG
      @MixMasterG Před 2 lety +8

      @@Drrolfski no need to apology. As you rightfully point out, a wedding, club and mobile DJ are different jobs entirely, which only have in common that it involves music. When I was an active DJ, most Dutch weddings had a (usually very corny) live band of musicians. If there was a DJ, then mixing was really not done. Same with mobile DJs, those crowds wanted to hear "whole tracks from start to finish" preferably with an announcement from the DJ. The only place where live mixing was appreciated was the club/discotheque.

    Since CDJs don’t handle MP4 format, is there a work around for video jocks to import their library somehow as audio only without having to redo all the cue points etc from scratch? Or avoiding having to make an MP3 copy? Great video as always!

    • @MixMasterG
      @MixMasterG Před 2 lety +2

      Some of the later CDJ models can play audio in MP4 containers, but if you want to play it safe then it's best to convert them to MP3s. I take it that you talk about Serato cues, there is no way to preserve them when converting from MP4 to MP3s (and they would shift anyway due to encoder shifts). I recommend the macOS freeware app XLD to convert audio formats, which will maintain as much of the common tags as possible.

      One of the most frequently asked questions is: when will there be a Windows version of any of my tools?
      My honest answer is: never. Not because I'm an OS snob, the reason is much simpler than that. The cause for most support questions I receive is not app, but operating system related. I simply lack the knowledge about Windows to support it as well as I can support macOS. I understand that having my tools on Windows would help many other artists and even multiply the revenue stream.
      With my resources being limited I've chosen to protect my good name when it comes to going the extra mile to support the users of my tools.
      I can't do that on Windows.

    Speaking of USB stick DJing and Windows.
    I have a The Pioneer XDJ Rx3. Now today I would like to go back to using a laptop and External drive. Wi-Fi Data Reliability can be just like a laptop that overheats etc. I bought the Rx3 cuz I thought I could use it both ways. Use the Rx3 with a external drive or the Rx3, in USB Standalone. So far I've used the laptop with an external drive, but I can only fit 2 terabytes of music in the Fat 32 format. I don't have the money to go Apple Mac. I'm not sure if I want to invest in putting all my music into Rekord box cloud. I'm also not sure about using virtual DJ. I had Traktor Pro 3. I left Traktor because all I heard about was how good Rekord box was. I play a huge variety of music and for many different age groups including seniors. If I could find a way use NTFS and have a 5, 7 TB External drive that would plug in like a USB with Windows 11 to my RX3... I'd be set. Here lately a lot of us have been looking at algorithm DJ now too. The beauty of this is you can use it with an IPad/IPhone. So now should I switch from Windows Android to Apple all together and DJ software/hardware? Ugh !! or Should I go with the good old standby Virtual DJ?

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx Před 2 lety

      To avoid any limitations with external drives on Windows, you need to format them in either NTFS or exFAT, not FAT32. Formatting will wipe them, though, so make sure you have the data stored elsewhere first.

    While i wish for an app like DJCU, it fails in many areas:
    - UX. You're going to deal with numerous steps on opening-closing DJCU app windows and other target/soruce app opening.
    - The code itself: It's basically a bundle of python script which is glued altogether, and it needs some extra toolset to run. For exemple i had to remove a lot of my M1 native CLI applications because DJCU was unable to work with them. (I'm a frontend developer as well, and my daily job relies on those stuffs)
    - UTF-8: You can forget your tracks in the conversion process which contains special unicode characters. If you're playing some vaporwave, witch house or hyperpop track, DJCU's not your stuff.
    - While DJCU advertise that it can convert to djay ios version, apparently that's another hack where you're just going to crack your head to the wall.
    Also, if you're a Denon DJ user, you have to purchase another bundle which will "help" you.
    And last but not least, happy arguing with Mixmaster G if something isn't working out of the box. :)

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx Před 2 lety +3

      I agree that the UX isn't really as simple as would be ideal, I would have much preferred this video to be half the length it was. But... So it's still a recommend from me - and an app which I use personally.
