"The Book of Saw" suggest that they're going in more of a anthology series direction with the Saw franchise which I'm all for.
Or a spin-off tho either way will breathe new life into the franchise.
I'm guessing it'll be something to do with people being inspired by Jigsaw and taking the traps beyond the place where 1-8 are set in.

Yeah I interpret and feel like jigsaw (saw 8) is just trying to show one of jigsaws apprentice bring him back one last time but of course the whole new character Logan being the apprentice instead of someone like dr Gordon or even tapps son from the video game at least (which is cannon, set in between the 1st and 2nd movie) but forsure 1-7 are great and is what they should go off of.

1:23 if I had to make a guess on that trap, here’s my theory. Attached to the victims head is a head trap and the only way to remove the trap is to free himself from the metal pieces from his fingers that are closed on his skin or whole finger tips. He needs to pull his fingers from the metal pieces within a time limit to remove the head trap or it will set off
Maybe he has to pull his nails out?
I might be mistaken but it doesn’t look like he has 5 fingers on his right arm or it 5 strings so it might be ripping his fingers off
Here’s what it actually is.
The killer says that the cop shot someone for insulting him, so they trapped him in that room. Their fingers are stuck in a Chinese finger trap-like device, and the room is slowly filling with water. The man has to bite down on the thing in his mouth to make the chains attached to his fingers pull away from him, ripping his fingers off. If he does not, the water will rise, and reach some copper wiring on the ceiling, which will then proceed to electrocute him. The killer says that their fingers pulled the trigger, so now he must either learn to live without them, or that room becomes his watery tomb.
This is interesting. So the directly of Saw 2 (arguably the best film, maybe just under the original), is doing this one. Saw 2 very much was focussed on the policework, with this new film leaning quite heavily into that route. I'm glad they're leaning away from the torture porn aspect that the series became known for from Saw 3 and onwards. Currently warm towards the idea of this movie, lets hope my gut pays off.
I thought it was weird Jigsaw is killing cops because he only killed criminals, but then I remembered cops can be criminals too. Everyone will be tested.

Directive Matthews planted evidence and framed criminals so maybe the cops have covered up a crime and Jigsaw will expose them or they die.

I've been intrigued by the idea of Chris Rock writing and starring in a Saw movie (not to mention with Sam Jackson) ever since I heard about it, and while it could definitely be terrible, it could also be just what this tired franchise needs.

I'm a big Saw fan but my hopes were kind of low for this but it actually looks like a decent followup. I just hope he actually is a copycat and they don't tie the killer directly to Jigsaw.

Happy to see where this goes. If Chris Rock thinks he's got something to say with this then he's earned the right to some attention, and the team is solid. Horror is an area where I don't mind riffs and spins on the same basic ideas and frameworks as there are lots of interesting things in the detail and the "how".

Well, I'm wholeheartedly interested.
I theorize that Sam L. Jackson’s character is either directly related to Chris Rock’s or he was Rock’s original partner. Maybe Jackson’s character stumbled upon this earlier in his career, ended up retiring and now that Chris Rock’s detective is back on it, it’s a full circle. It spiraled.

The one thing that has me very curious is why cops are being targeted. Because it goes against Jigsaw's motives. He made games to teach one to value their life. This time around it feels like there's the intent to kill. Just like how Hoffman went about his work.
My theory is it's copycat killers just trying to get the cops off the backs of those who are actually continuing Jigsaw's legacy properly. But idk
