"Charmed but uncomfortable" accurate feeling for ivy 😊
Yeah! The butterfly/fairytale vibe of the music is lovely and charming but the lyrics make that vibe feel wrong. Very well done for this song. A weird vibe and message to get across but it's a very likable song as well.
@@JSteezy yeah 🙂 which as you've said, perfectly captures the emotional state of someone in that situation. The feeling of living in the moment and thrill of it but also the confusion if it is right to feel that way. A goddamn war indeed. 😅

Well said! The fairyytale vibe isn't one you run into much unless maybe it's some kind of fairytale movie, ya know? Not that I watch that kinda thing much haha
@@JSteezy Yes, love that! I think I especially liked this because Taylor's done fairytale stuff before (there is literally a song on the Fearless re-release called 'Today was a fairytale' lol) but whereas that early stuff was about bright sparkle and teen heartbreak, evermore fairytale is darker and more ambiguous.

my taste in music literally consists of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s and taylor haha. i grew up listening to stuff like Fleetwood mac, pink floyd, bruce springsteen, eagles etc. and when i got older and started outgrowing the influence of my father a little bit, taylor joined :D.
Haha that's a funny story. I might have a similar one. That being said, I still very much listen to the music I grew up around and have grown to appreciate it more and more.

Story time.
I didn't relate to this song and I always thought of it as a kind of story that happened a lot in the past ages. Many people seem to think that it might be about an alleged affair Emily Dickinson (one of Taylor's fave poets) had. However, one day, a real life story told by my colleague changed the way I see this song forever.
We were on a night shift and I showed him a couple of songs from Hozier and Taylor. After listening to the last great American dynasty, my colleague said that he doesn't really care about big names and rumours and tragedies of individual people. After a bit of dwelling, he opened up and said that others' dramas don't stir much emotion in him, probably because his own life is an emotional mess. Then he proceeded to tell me about his love story.
The guy once saw a beautiful girl at a train station while waiting for his train to uni. He chickened out and didn't approach her but swore he'd talk to her next time. He was at that train station a few times a week for another year, but never saw her again. Then, one day, he got pissed off at his train that was delayed. He twitted about his frustration and immediately afterwards, his tweet was liked by somebody who was not following him. He clicked on that person's profile and yes, it was the same girl he had seen a year earlier. It turned out she was waiting for another train and in the meantime, she was checking out tweeter in case some notifications regarding her train would pop up.
They started going out and soon enough, they fell in love. They had to keep their relationship in secret though because they knew they'd never get their parents' blessing. Although both of them were born and raised in England, she had her roots in India, while his were in Pakistan. They're both Muslims but their parents would never agree for them to marry a 'foreigner'. They thought of telling their parents about their relationship but they would risk being disowned by their families and for both of them, family is the highest value. So they decided to live on a begged and borrowed time, while her parents are actively looking for a future man for her and my colleagues' parents also nag him to agree for an arranged marriage since in their minds, he's been struggling with finding himself any girlfriend.
They know that once she gets betrothed, they will need to stop meeting. But for now, they're just enjoying the time they have left.
Some time after he finished telling this heartbreaking story, 'Ivy' started playing. I smiled and he asked why, but I couldn't answer. I think this song would be too on the nose for him at this time. But his story taught me that Ivy indeed describes a life of many people nowadays, not only those from the past. It's a very sad reality but somehow the song captures also a happy side of it - the time when you can still dream of ending up with the person you love and escaping with them.
She's so unique and distinctive from anyone else in the music industry that you can just know its her song lol.
I feel this but I also wonder if I heard something like Closure or The Lakes if I would ever even imagine it was her. Me, maybe not. Others? Hard to say. The average person only aware of her and knowing of a few hits probably never would imagine it but that's what I think.
This song definitely gives off a different vibe than the others- partly because its tone feels almost like a historical drama- phrases like 'taking mine (my hand) but it's been promised to another'- having your hand promised to someone in marriage is such an old-fashioned reference, so it made me think about the narrator being someone who was promised in marriage to someone she probably didn't choose herself, and then falling in love with someone else who she knows she can't be with but also can't get that person out of her system. it's an interesting song that I actually like more the more I listen to it!
I love taylor's music because, I may not relate to the whole song, but there are lines that just resonate so deeply and are applicable to almost all relationships. "My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand" is something that just makes me melt and im not even sure why. "My pain" makes me think about my struggles with mental illness and past abuse, and "the palm of your freezing hand" makes me think of my fiance and her ability to calm or "cool" me down when I'm super affected by it.
I love it when I saw Taylor’s songs gave u something to think about cuz that’s how the art works. Love ur reactions to evermore cuz I think I love evermore more than folklore just because how deep, smart, & mature the songwritings in evermore album, but then I realized that I couldn’t love evermore without listening/experiencing folklore before. They were designed with one connection to each other. Such great body of works for folklore & evermore. 💖✨ kinda wish u could react to another album that was produced by Jack Antonoff (just like folklore & evermore) such like: Lorde’s Melodrama, Lana Del Rey’s Norman F-ing Rockwell & Chemtrails Over the Country Club, St. Vincent’s Masseduction, & Kevin Abstract’s Arizona Baby. Or maybe something experimental like Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutter album. 😅
This song sounds like it belongs more to folklore than evermore.
Musically or lyrically? Somehow I feel what you are saying but maybe it's just because these album are similar? I don't know. Maybe it's the vibe of The Lakes or Seven a bit but I know The Lakes was kind of a deluxe track. Hmm
To me it fits perfect on evermore with how hopeful and light it sounds, folklore’s parallel song would be illicit affairs and that fits perfectly where it is as a darker more desperate tone. The albums may be sisters but they feel so different to me. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same.
I really loved this song when it first came out, still do, it’s definitely one of my favorites from the album. As someone who reads a lot of classic lit, I was really drawn to the symbolism and diction used in this song. It gave me gothic romance vibes, very much Wuthering Heights feels. But as you said, it also gives off an almost uneasy undertone because she is talking about an affair, something very taboo, that you don’t hear about often in this context. And that’s something that hits hard because its something that can and still does happen. Overall I love it. It’s dark, sad, beautiful, hopeful and oh so goddamn complex.
Ivy is also a destructive force if it grows too much. It's a metaphor for destroying this woman's walls but also her steady and loveless marriage.
“I’ll meet you where the spirit meets the bone” is her talking about a freakin graveyard and I’m still not over it!! I’ve never heard a graveyard described so beautifully before.

I’ve been here since the early Taylor reactions and I’ve really enjoyed watching your journey.
Her re-recorded Fearless album comes out Friday, if you’re interested now would be the perfect time to dive into her older work and deep cuts, now that you appreciate her. Her older stuff is great but now with her mature vocals and production aspects she’s picked on along the way it’s gonna be flawless!
Spoiler: her writing was phenomenal from the very start!

@@JSteezy you’re so behind lol she’s gonna redo her entire catalog of her 15 year career.
She’s re-recording her entire first 6 albums plus unreleased songs during each era that didn’t make it on each album during their first run. She’s doing this to gain ownership of her music that was stolen from her.
I’m sure it will be on CZcams in lyric videos like you’ve been doing.
I think you’re in that sweet spot of experiencing her new stuff but also her new old songs coming out are a chance to discover what you missed out on.
I’m sure you know by now she sings a lot about love and break ups, especially back then, but she does so in a way that not many have captured as eloquently as her.

That being said I think my timing of getting into this really is a sweetspot. Agreed, many love and breakup songs but this one is definitely an example of a version of this concept not told as much before. I really dig this song.
I was in the same position not too long ago. Before Lover I had only heard her radio hits and liked them just fine but never listen to anything else, I didn’t really follow anyone closely or listen to their full discography in the past 10 years (with the exception of Panic! at this Disco). It wasn’t until Taylor sang ME! with Brendon from Panic! that I was like hold up I gotta hear more, I went back and listened to every album and got to know her and fell in love, now not a day goes by that I don’t listen to Taylor. 🥰

Finally! I was wondering where Ivy was!!!! Love this song. Lyrically it is so well written, starts off with a poetic reference, it’s very complex. I think the instrumentals are interesting, it gets deeper and more full and complicated as the song goes on . There are supposed to be jingle bells in the background. Blaze in the dark I think it is a metaphor to a hot and sultry affair that she is having or trying not to have. The question is I the affair is actually happening or not. Love the drums pickup at the end. I love this song, it has so many layers. It’s an awesome song.
Eagles were good. Take it easy not my favorite but it is a very popular one. Last Dance with Mary Jane I think is 90s. Both great songs.

@@JSteezy I haven't really listened to the Eagles in years but my favorites are Lyin Eyes and Take it To the limit. I always liked that song. I guess I like Tequila Sunrise a lot too, maybe not quite as much. I'm more of a Tom Petty fan though. I lost the chance to see him before he died. The Waiting is my favorite, but he has so many good ones its difficult for me to choose them, anything off Full Moon Fever probably or Wildflowers. So, now that you have finished folklore and evermore, what are your overall thoughts of the project and of your journey to find songs of Taylor's that you liked? I don't much like her mainstream songs either, which was kinda why I started my own journey to figure it out. There had to be more to it.

Lol you want to relate to it? Sounds kind of nice but in a way you don't feel is ok. Funny song idea and definitely a thing that can come up in life and catch you way off guard.
I'm glad you like the song, I think its one of her best (lyrically and sonically). I think it's the story of an unfaithful relationship caused by an unhappy mariage
I love the story of it. The lyrics and musicality are generally always very strong but this strikes a special chord for it's unusual story and presentation of it. Such a cool idea. The fairytale vibes are such a cool touch.
Ivy got me feeling weird too on my initial listen haha. The story's setting is kinda folky and wonderland ish. But it's stuck on repeat since then. Sometimes we can't help but relate ourselves in the songs we listen to, so i understand that anxiety your speaking of haha. Anyways, great job and see yah on the next vid.

@@halox3595 well I think the actual metaphors of Ivy being a girls name is significant. Also the can meet in a faith forgotten land. They can't be together due to religion/society. Feels set in the past , she says tell me to run, or dare to sit and watch what we'll become and drink my husband's wine. This creates imagery for me of a female 'friend' sat in her living room drinking wine. All in plain sight. I don't think her husband would like another guy around drinking wine with her regularly. Opal eyes are quite a feminine description imo and the fact she grieves for the living because she knows she can't be with her openly. Magnificently cursed also? No? Just me?
