The whole time he sang, the judges were just talking to each other about how weird it was and didn't even listen to his performance. No one believed me when I said I didn't do it, I couldn't stop crying. The only one who came to my defense, surprisingly, was the kid whose money was stolen. He pointed out that they couldn't find me guilty without hard evidence. He learned that from watching his dad, who was a really famous defense attorney.
    But then just a few years ago I saw my old friend's name in the news, and he'd become a really ruthless prosecutor! I tried to get back in touch with him, but he would never answer my letters or my calls or my emails, so I thought maybe if I became the next American Idol then he'd have to acknowledge me.

    Part of what made the older seasons inspiring was that going up in front of the judges was a risk. They might tear you to shreds, and the producers used to hype people up so their reactions were more genuine when they did get torn apart. There are no stakes now, it's just another typical "reality" show that feels formulaic and scripted.

    My problem with tragic backstories for those singers is this: everyone has had hard things in life happen that they had to go through. But someone like me, someone who doesn’t want to talk about it, wouldn’t have as much as a chance just because they don’t feel like giving the world a sob story. People that are silent about their past might not have it easier, they just don’t like telling the world about it.

However, with something like American Idol where you know damn well what the game is (emotional sob story with a good voice basically gets you in), you have to play that game to make it. You have to be prepared to do something you may not want to do if you truly want the best chance at making it on that show. You have to play the game.

    i auditioned for american idol when they came to boston a few years back. it was a really last minute thing and i wasn't expecting much because i didn't really get a lot of time to prepare when i decided to go but just wanted to do it for the experience. waited in line for hours. right before we auditioned, a group of us saw an excited girl running to what looked to be her father and hugging him, crying because of how happy she was because she was moving on. we all thought it was a really sweet moment. then we saw someone working redirect her back and had them shoot that moment, like, three more times. then they break you off into sections and wait in another line to be auditioned, but you can hear the people who are going before you. there were SO many talented people, and the only people i heard them let in were three very obviously bad singers. two of them seemed to be just messing around and one seemed more serious. i wasn't even upset about not moving on because i didn't really expect to, but it always bothered me that they chose people who wouldn't get far at all in the show just for entertainment factor rather than people with actual talent who care about music and want to pursue it. i feel like the whole "bad american idol auditions" trope has been taken way too far when you're taking three bad people out of a pool of the fifty that were standing there. that's just my opinion though

And that last group was rare which made it all that more amazing when it happened. Now it's mostly that which cheapens it. Another thing that they do is, if they show someone's story or linger on them before they go on, you know they're gonna be good or go through and it ruins the seconds before when you get to guess how it's going to go. stuff like 14:20 is why I have always hated American Idol and The Voice and other singing shows. Real talent doesn't get recognized unless they have a sob story for sure. But the most annoying part for me is that they're just doing glorified karaoke. its like 99% just covering famous songs. In very few cases those shows produced an actual artist that was able to make a name for themselves - mainly Clarkson, Underwood, and Lambert to a lesser degree. It's not a competition for artists or song writers, its just a karaoke popularity contest, and then the winners fizzle into nobodies after that

      Jack Virdin pretty much all reality TV works like that now. Even back during the original American idol era producers would screen contestants and either pick ones with really sappy back stories to put through or people who were really obviously bad so that they could be made fun of.

    • @Noahed_

      Dude, I considered applying to the show but stopped due to the excessive saturation of sob stories. I don't have their TV personality they sought for, and I've lived a pretty normal life. Heck, my mom joked that if I got up the mega well, contrary to the overly ecstatic reactions, I'd just say "meh" and take the money.
      I remember during one of the season in Vegas there was a Tiktoker who wanted to do a flip into the Jumping Spider. He failed miserably and it was clearly done for clout. I just thought to myself that a person who wanted a shot at beating Vegas got their spot taken by that prick.
      I stopped watching the show about a year ago. The direction they've taken with it just feels corporate and fake. I miss when it was actually about competition and not being a god damn reality show.

  • @veggie9755
    @veggie9755 Před 4 lety +252

    I think it's fair to say that they're giving disadvantaged people an opportunity when others already had that opportunity, because not everyone has money or vocal training. But at the end of the day, it's about talent, and people who aren't even averagely good shouldn't advance. Also, someone can lose their mom and still have a bunch of opportunities to become famous. Having something bad happen to you does not automatically make you less privileged or less advantaged. So yes, it is quite annoying that they seem to *only* choose people with sad backstories and say no to extremely talented people who don't have a tragic backstory.

    • @elliinspace
      @elliinspace Před 4 lety +18

      It's also worth noting that not everyone without an extremely sad story who auditions is necessarily privileged. Maybe, they had a normal upbringing in a middle-class family. That still doesn't mean they have extremely high chances to make it without the competition, and the show might be important for them too. They might have worked hard behind the scenes. So, not being completely downtrodden doesn't mean that you're at the other extreme either. Being in the middle is also hard when it comes to fickle careers like show business.

      @veggie9755 Před 4 lety +1

      I’m not a fan of the new angle I think I they’ve thrown away the idea of people even getting an opportunity and have turned it into pure television entertainment. There’s not much point in sacrificing talent for previous lack of opportunity. Which is probably why no one actually gets a decent music career off the show anymore. That’s accurate right? The new winners aren’t nearly as successful as they used to be, I can’t name anyone after Adam Lambert.

    I remember watching "The Voice" for the first time with my mom. After like the fourth person was introduced in a long-ass video diary sob story, I was like. "Why does everyone have a tragic backstory?" And she legitimately said, "They aren't tragic they're inspiring." As a woman cried on the TV about how her mother died and was the only one that believed in her. I was like ...wut???
